  1. #LewistonID library to lend outdoor activity kits thanks to new grant

    Published November 11, 2024

"Library users in the Lewiston area will soon have the chance to try gold panning, #birdwatching and other outdoor activities free of charge.

The #LewistonCityLibrary recently won a grant from the National Forest Community Recreation Fund to put together outdoor activity kits its users can check out starting next month. The Idaho Capital Sun first reported this story.

'We’re excited to partner with the Lewiston City Library to support new ways for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with public lands, learn about conservation, and inspire them to take an active role in #stewardship,' said Angela Edwards, a partnership coordinator with the #NezPerceClearwater #NationalForests.

Kits include equipment needed for gold panning, birdwatching, #hiking and #camping. A #DutchOven will also be available for those wanting to experience cooking outdoors.

Those are on top of the fishing poles the library has loaned out for years, according to library director Lynn Johnson.

'It seemed like a good way for us to offer things for the public that are a little out of the ordinary,' Johnson said in a press release.

'Libraries are about opportunity. Whether you have limited means or lots of access and wealth, we want to help people of all means try something out,' she said.

These new outdoor activity kits will be available to check out by those with a Valnet library card, which includes a group of 48 school and public libraries in north central Idaho stretching from Elk City to Potlatch."

  3. From 2021: Guide to the Growing World of #NatureBasedLearning

“Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach of us more than we can ever learn from books.”
    John Lubbock

Excerpt: "Inspired by the Scandinavian embrace of #OutdoorLearning, the #ForestSchool movement migrated to the UK in the 1990s and has grown strongly ever since. In the US, the first nature-based preschool, the #NewCanaanNatureCenter, opened in 1967 in #Connecticut. The pace of nature-based preschools was gradual until, many say, after the publication of #RichardLouv’s #LastChildInTheWoods in 2005. Soon after, the growth of these schools went wild, experiencing a 25-fold increase over the past decade.

"Around the world, the forest school movement has also been growing strong. Whether you find forest schools in the UK, #BushKindys in #Australia, #waldkindergarten in #Germany or #MoriNoIe in #Japan, forest schools can be found in dozens of countries as parents and caretakers seek out the benefits of nature for their children, particularly for the early childhood years."

  4. So, I was pleased to learn that a small local library (in a historic building) is offering "explorer bags" to borrow! And they are right next door to an 80-acre nature preserve! #LibraryOfThings and #LearningWithNature! What a fantastic combination!

Fabulous Tots sessions today, little ones enjoyed using hammers to smash bugs frozen in ice, we then used our amazing bug discs from @EarthLearning to find out what bugs we had discovered.

  8. Poll: If you have any contact with young kids (under 8) how much do you share & discuss environmental troubles with them? Comment to add nuance & experiences. Maybe some issues are more tolerable than others. Age of kids will make a difference too. #NatureConnection #NatureEducation #Children #OutdoorLearning #EcoLiteracy Please reblog if you don't have experience of kids enough to vote.

  9. 👋🏻 I'm Skylar (he/him). I grew up in New Orleans and moved to Madison, Wisconsin for graduate school in #Geology before changing tracks and becoming a middle/high school #Teacher.

In the #Education realm, I'm particularly passionate about #OutdoorLearning, #ProgressiveEducation, and #StudentVoice. I currently teach at Koshkonong Trails School, a small, public charter school with an environmental and agricultural focus; serve on the boards for the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education and Human Restoration Project (@humrespro); and lead the Wisconsin Teacher-Powered Schools Network.

I like to write about teaching, and take nature photos, which I post to Medium and Flickr, respectively. I'm particularly fond of rocks and lichen.

I was heavily invested in the bird network before the billionaire took over, but I deleted my account and am learning how to Mastodon. c.im seemed like a friendly server that wasn't as absurdly large as mastodon.social, which I initially joined.

I'm excited to have a new online community to explore, while also mourning the one I've left behind. #Introduction #TwitterMigration
