  2. I've already liberated 2 visiting ladybugs from inside my house today. I guess I'll make it 3 even though it's dark outside.

  6. CW: (Really cool looking) beetle photo

I got some clearing of the brick path done because I had the energy and wherewithal. I accidentally disturbed this beetle (which looks really neat).

The beetle is a Goldlaufkäfer (in English - Golden Ground Beetle). Apparently, it hunts for snails, worms, and other insects as well as feeds on carrion and mushrooms. They're considered a friend to farmers and gardeners. I'm glad it's in my yard!

(Though I will admit to having a moment of going "This is straight from The Mummy and that did NOT go well.")

  7. Zelus luridus, pale green assassin bug on Syzygium jambos, rose apple

This tiny nymph is so loaded with pollen, it looks golden.

  8. When you can safely keep some fallen leaves in place, you help your local lacewings overwinter.

    From LSU: Green Lacewings.

4 page guide. Includes photos of all life stages to help you protect and grow your local beneficial population. If you have challenges with too many aphids, thrips, and more, ditch pesticides. Instead, invite in and partner with lacewings.

  9. CW: Bugs, bugs eating other bugs

So, we had the urban/suburban gardening group over today. A little training, a little inquiry into any problems they may be having, and answering some questions the gardeners had.

They are doing great! And they had some interesting questions about bugs- which are good bugs? Which are bad bugs?
One of the things we have all noticed is the noticeable decrease in stinkbug and spotted lanternfly populations- both on our property, and in the general area. And they all know to leave praying mantises be. A few of them described a bug that most people don't know about, that lives here- a few kinda blurry phone photos of a few let us identify them as late nymph stage wheel bugs.
Yes, this is part of their normal area, but there are many more of them than we are used to seeing. Warmer weather, and more food for them? They kill and eat stink bugs and spotted lantern flies- and just about anything else they can catch and spear with their beak-like mouth.

  15. CW: spider mites close up

I had purchased (through the mail) a beautiful palm from Costa Farms, and had not done enough to isolate it before it came in contact with my home. The plant was absolutely infested with two spot spider mites, and I was new enough not to notice until the webbing was everywhere. I treated with #PredatoryMites #BeneficialInsects as well as washed off plants, and trimmed off areas of heavy infestation. It was a real pain, but the new leaves are looking good so far. Lesson learned. Also, it was cool learning those beneficials were so tiny that they were unobtrusive. Expensive, but I would use again. I do not think they can handle an infestation alone though. #houseplants #spidermites #pests

  19. CW: movie of bug cannibalism

An update on #GreenLacewing larvae: They were voracious, and I have not had any aphid problems. They ran out of stuff to eat, and they cannibalized each other. The larvae were small enough that nobody noticed them unless I made a point of showing them. They liked to hide, and remained near plants. I never saw an adult, so they were either eaten by carnivorous plants or just flew outside when I was not looking. Absolutely worth the cost, and fun to watch if you are not skittish about bugs. #pests #houseplant #aphids #BeneficialInsects #IndoorGardening

  20. CW: insects

The #GreenLacewing eggs are hatching, and the larvae are quite small (and yet easy to identify). At a normal magnification, most folks would not notice. When I use my new #MacroPhotography lens, I can see them more clearly. So far, I am genuinely enjoying the release of these in the #IndoorGardening and #HousePlant space. #BeneficialInsects seem far easier to use than other methods. Now, let’s just see if they work!

  21. This summer, there were lots of #hoverflies. As adults, they are important #pollinators. As larvae, and depending on the species, they do beneficial stuff like break down organic matter or feed on crop pests. #BeneficialInsects #Biodiversity #FieldResearch #Agroecology
