This is an illustrated bible that belonged to the Laing Family, containing the Old and New Testaments. In the centre of the bible there's a 'Family Register' section for recording marriages, births and deaths, as well as multiple pages where portraits or photographs of family members could be attached. Gown, Christening, White lawn, 1820-1890

This christening gown is made from white lawn. White lawn is sheer, lightweight, fine plain weave textile which is known for its semi-transparency. The gown has a panel of Ayrshire whitework attached to the bodice which is trimmed with wings of the same lace. Ayrshire whitework was popular in the early to mid 19th century and was made by women in Ayrshire county, Scotland who were employed as piece workers. These women we're called 'Flowerers' and had a high skill level which is evident in the quality of the lace they produced. This gown also has short sleeves that are trimmed with Ayrshire whitework with a chevron edge, the neck of the bodice is trimmed with handmade Valenciennes bobbin lace. Both the wings and the Valenciennes lace continue over the shoulder and onto the back collar. The lack of a loose pointed tip at the bottom of the panel suggests that this christening gown was made for a girl, however this could simply be a stylistic choice by the maker. This gown also has a front skirt panel that is embellished with both Ayrshire whitework and pintucks which extends down the entire length of the skirt. This panel ends with three chevrons that are also trimmed with wings. The gown is hemmed with pintucks and Ayrshire whitework.

Just shipped these babies to the Clay Center of New Orleans. I'm super excited to be one of the artists chosen by juror Courtney Mattison to showcase my work in the "Ripple Effect" exhibit opening April 19th.
