  5. Photograph, Molly and Nelly Dawson, 1890-1900

The notes on this photograph indicate that these two well dressed woman are named Molly and Nelly. The surname Dawson has later been handwritten on the back of the photograph, so we assume that this is their surname. We do not have any records to positively identify them or to establish their connection to Western Southland. The photograph dates from the 1890s or early 1900s and was taken by Frederic Boulton Hughes from his Coronation Studio at 11 Victoria Square, Christchurch.

  7. Portrait, Framed William Clark, 1900-1908

This is a framed and glazed hand coloured photographic portrait of William Clark. William worked as the farrier on the Edendale Estate in the 1870s. William had earlier served as a farrier during the Crimean War and provided entertainment for the children of the area by giving exhibitions of sword exercises with a hot bar of iron. Later, William worked as a farrier for Charles Clement who had the blacksmiths on Morton Street, Edendale. The pair had worked together at the Estate and William eventually took over the business. William was married to Dora Clark whose portrait we also have in the collection. He died on 15 November 1908.

  9. Bible, Laing Family, 1900?

This is an illustrated bible that belonged to the Laing Family, containing the Old and New Testaments. In the centre of the bible there's a 'Family Register' section for recording marriages, births and deaths, as well as multiple pages where portraits or photographs of family members could be attached. 10. Gown, Christening, White lawn, 1820-1890

This christening gown is made from white lawn. White lawn is sheer, lightweight, fine plain weave textile which is known for its semi-transparency. The gown has a panel of Ayrshire whitework attached to the bodice which is trimmed with wings of the same lace. Ayrshire whitework was popular in the early to mid 19th century and was made by women in Ayrshire county, Scotland who were employed as piece workers. These women we're called 'Flowerers' and had a high skill level which is evident in the quality of the lace they produced. This gown also has short sleeves that are trimmed with Ayrshire whitework with a chevron edge, the neck of the bodice is trimmed with handmade Valenciennes bobbin lace. Both the wings and the Valenciennes lace continue over the shoulder and onto the back collar. The lack of a loose pointed tip at the bottom of the panel suggests that this christening gown was made for a girl, however this could simply be a stylistic choice by the maker. This gown also has a front skirt panel that is embellished with both Ayrshire whitework and pintucks which extends down the entire length of the skirt. This panel ends with three chevrons that are also trimmed with wings. The gown is hemmed with pintucks and Ayrshire whitework.

  11. Photograph, Possibly the last meeting of the Native Land Court in Riverton, 1900-1910

Possibly the last meeting of the Native Land Court in Riverton. Research is ongoing as to the exact date this image was taken. A comprehensive history of the foundation of Māori Land Courts can be found at www.māorilandcourt.govt.nz. An inscription on the back has part of some surnames and possibly decipher as: 'Goodwillie, Bates, Cameron, Davis, Stevens, Portnick, Wesley, R D Joss' others are illegible. Also on the back are instructions for cropping and enlarging three ladies and one gentleman to a separate photo. They are as follows: 'Seated on the pavement the woman, first left, is Hema Poko, also seated second on the left is Caroline (Kuini Te Auta) Goodwillie. She holds a small woven flax bag. The woman seated on the pavement fifth from the left wears a large, brimmed hat and is Harriet Bates. Mr. Charles Goodwillie stands second on the right of the image. He wears a bowler hat and stands slightly to the front.' Te Hikoi Museum holds the colourised cropped version of the four.

  16. Photograph, Jones-McIntosh Wedding

This is a studio photograph of the wedding of Mary Jones and James McIntosh, which took place in 1931. At the time, Mary was 22 and James 26. Mary was the daughter of Barbara and Henry Jones. Henry died in 1910, when Mary was only a baby, in a steeplechase accident whilst following the hounds at a Hunt Club Meeting. James grew up on his family farm at Brighton, just out of Dunedin. The couple had three children together. We believe they lived on Pine Hill Road, Dunedin, and James worked as a storeman. Mary died in 1979 aged 70 years. Her ashes were scattered. James died in 1994 aged 88. He is buried in the Green Island Cemetery with his parents, brother George and his grandmother, Christina. Cemetery records show that James mother, Elizabeth, was living with Mary and James at the time of her death. We have been unable to establish how this family connects to our area. Perhaps one of their children later lived in the Lower Mataura Valley.

  21. Photograph, Framed Coronation Day PO Exchange Staff

This is a framed and glazed hand tinted photograph taken on the Coronation Day of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Here the Post Office Exchange Staff are shown in the parade of floats which took place in Wyndham. Back row: Ngaire Shaw, Vera Harvey, Viney Peacock Front row: Dorothy Young, Elvena McLellan and Lily Crow When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on the 2nd of June 1953, Wyndham's celebrations began with a morning civic service in the Town Hall. Mr Harry R. Stirling presided and Mr R. M. Hutton-Potts of Invercargill spoke of the significance of the Coronation Ceremony and the Queen's duties. A combined choir sang hymns with Betty Geary as the pianist and Rev G. H. Reid read the Bible passages and led the prayers. The afternoon programme began with a parade from the intersection of Balaclava and Inkerman Streets. The Pipe Band led the parade to the school, where assembled floats depicted topics of the times, such as 'Financing the Country Library Service', 'The move to form a Fire Brigade' and 'Efforts to get a licensed hotel for the town'. Also humorously played out was a 'knighting' of Harry Stirling, the Town Clerk, as Sir Henry Roderick Stirling K.S.S. and A.R. (Knight of the Sanitary Services and Ash Removal). Jack Geary who had recently holed-in-one at golf, was Lord Geary L.H.O. C.N. (Lord Hole In One and Commander of the Nineteenth) and Sir Douglas Norman Alister McPherson was P.L.R. (Publisher of the Local Rag). Their carriage was the horse-drawn ash cart driven by William Trethaway. The Coronation Ball was held in the evening - "One of the most spectacular occasions in the social life of the Wyndham District in recent years". Celebrations continued when the Bible Class members presented a pageant on the following Sunday night, at the Wyndham Presbyterian Church, where they presented the meaning of the Coronation. They had effectively produced copies of the Crown, the Sword, the Scepter, the Orb, the Ampulla and other regalia, all of which gave realistic ideas of the originals.
