Capt. Thorpe is on the left, Capt. Crawford on the right. Photo taken shortly after Crawford's appointment as a pilot. Thorpe, from Ireland, was harbourmaster at the time; Crawford, a master in Union Co. passenger vessels between NZ / Australia, the most recent (at that time) being the TSS “Atua”, was born in Sumner, educated in Christchurch and Lyttelton and went to sea as an Apprentice in the NZ Shipping Company's barque “Waimate”. The vessel in the background at No.1 Breastwork is the Antarctic supply vessel “Terra Nova".

The Grand Hotel, corner of The Square and Church Street west, 1906~
The Grand Hotel was built in 1906 for Martin Craven, to replace the Provincial Hotel which was gutted by fire. Over the years it has been host to visiting diginitaries to Palmerston North, including Royalty in 1927 and 1954. In 1985 the then owners, Manawatu Holdings Ltd, converted the top floors into commercial offices and retail space.

Photograph Album (loose pages) of 70652 Private Raymond Troup, 35th Reinforcements. Raymond Troup, a photographer's assistant from Auckland embarked from Wellington on 2 March 1918 aboard HMNZT 101 Tofua bound for Southampton, England. Raymond Troup served on the Western Front and the occupation of Germany, between 18 October 1917 and 5 August 1919. The album covers training at Featherston and Tauherenikau Camps, New Zealand. There are postcards and photographs of the American Fleet in New Zealand in August 1925.

Steamer on the Uretara River, unknown
A small steam boat on the Uretara River. According to Max Avery's book "Maritime Tauranga 1826-1970" the steamer in this photograph is believed to be the s.s. Result, the longest serving steamer in the Tauranga-Katikati trade. The photo was sourced from the Hardy-Johnston photo album.
