Real academic citations are messy. "

  5. "When #DanFreidus walks into #Bookstock, Metro #Detroit’s beloved used #book and #media sale, he is not just browsing for something interesting to #read. He is hunting for history, often tucked between stained pages, spiral bindings and #recipes for #kugel, #brisket or “Aunt Rose’s #mandelbread.”

For Dan, a longtime collector with deep roots in the world of #books, #Jewish community #cookbooks are more than kitchen guides. They are records of Jewish life: where people lived, what they ate, how they adapted, what organizations they built and how communities preserved memory through #food.

As a child, Dan’s father collected books, opening a door to a world Dan might otherwise never have encountered. “I met #librarians and #bookdealers through him that I never would have met,” he explained, “so I got a peek into that world when I was pretty young.”

That early exposure eventually grew into a wide-ranging passion for books and ephemera, and, over time, cookbooks."

TechCrunch: Librarians are hosting viral ‘Avoiding AI’ workshops for people who are fed up with Big Tech. “AI naysayers know that this technology is far broader than just chatbots and deepfake apps. [Hannah] Cyrus mentioned how useful optical character recognition is for scanning old documents at the library. But for her and the people who go to her workshops, the anti-AI movement isn’t […]

  15. Excellent blog post on VLA site re internships and what's involved. I had to laugh at my internal slightly peevish response to the title "Internships Don't Supervise Themselves" (I did it, but it wasn't fun - I was my own mentor teacher as part of K12 library certification) #librarians

  17. A thoroughly well meant gesture from the queen and an excellent book from an excellent author, but will this succeed in getting children excited by reading that aren't already? To develop their own love for reading, children need agency, a chance to choose "their thing" or discover what their thing might be, without a reading scheme or well meaning adult telling them what they should read next. Librarians and knowledgeable independent booksellers are worth their weight in gold and I would love to take any class I teach to our local bookshop to each choose their own book to keep. I fear many of these will end up in charity shops. #kidlit #iamreading #yearofreading #booksofmastodon #librarians #bookshops #readingforall #readingforpleasure royal.uk/news-and-activity/202

  19. How a Librarian’s Job is Changing
    Profound Changes for Campus Libraries
Without librarians, a library building is merely a warehouse of stuff. Today, the library profession, much like the library itself, is undergoing profound change.
As many of the activities of the #library have moved online, #librarians have had to adapt to keep up with broader shifts in technology & society. These trends have had profound implications for the people entering the profession and the skills it requires

  20. Are there any profs or librarians with access to the B1G Academic Alliance Geoportal that can confirm whether a digital copy of the 1927 Amherst, Va Sanborn Fire Insurance map is in the collection?

The search results suggest perhaps so - and the map is fully in the public domain now (per the LOC) - but I can't seem to find a digital copy. LOC hasn't scanned it yet.

Please share if you know someone with insights.

  22. Censorship and the Role of Librarians in the Fight for Democracy

Last month, U.S. librarian Amanda Jones delivered a keynote to the Libraries Connected annual symposium in the U.K., where she spoke about the importance of defending the freedom to read. "When we allow political groups to pull books that feature marginalized characters, we are not just removing ink and paper. We are sending a clear, devastating message to students that their stories, their identities, and their very lives do not matter," Jones said. "We cannot, and we will not, abide by that."
