The Repair Cafe today was pretty good. My final score sucked - too many unfixable things, where I traced the problem to a component that is proprietary or application-specific and therefore more expensive than replacing the thing, or unavailable at any price. There's too much of this.
I did get a chance to use my teeny spot-welder in anger to #MacGyver together a pair of replacement battery contacts for a portable CD player where the batteries had leaked and destroyed them. Leaky alkaline cells and brass/copper contacts are a brutal combination - it can chew right through the metal, as in this case, broken clean off. I was surprised to see bare brass; most small electronics have nickel-plated contacts for many years now. Those are at least a little more resilient to the alkaline paste electrolyte.

Zijn we nu zo dom of wie houdt zich voor de domme?

Natuur, waar wij in rond mogen lopen, is het mooiste en belangrijkste dat er is. Zonder natuur geen mogelijkheid om te bestaan. In ieders verdiende vakantie is de natuur weer van alle kanten bewonderd. Soms misschien vervloekt vanwege hitte of zelfs bosbranden, maar toch. En nu? Vakantie (bijna) voorbij, (straks) fris en fruitig weer back to normal. Najagen van de afgesproken targets? Of beviel de vakantie zo goed. Ging je stresslevel terug naar hanteerbare waarden. Die je wel graag zo wilt houden? Tijd om het roer nu maar eens echt om te gooien!
Wat zou dat mooi zijn als we dat zouden durven. Kiezen voor je eigen welzijn. En als we het niet alleen doen maar samen ontstaat er vanzelf draagkracht. Ik geloof het eigenlijk zelf ook niet. Maar er zijn inmiddels voorbeelden te over. Van mensen, gemeenschappen, hele steden en zelfs landen die het anders doen.
Nederland durft niet het braafste mensje van de klas te zijn. Nederland wijst naar Europa, kijkt alleen maar de regeerperiode vooruit. Dat is niet echt een motivatie om het zelf wel te doen. Of eigenlijk juist wel! Als de overheid en het bedrijfsleven niet durven vanwege allerlei belangen en belangetjes (lees lobby's), dan moet het maar klein beginnen.En het goede nieuws is: dat kan vaak al in je eigen omgeving. ECHT WAAR!

Today was this month's Repair Cafe in my city. I think it also marks a full year I've been volunteering at them. I enjoy it a lot.
After last months good results - everything brought to me successfully fixed *except* one item - I got exactly the same result today. A bunch of successes, and one failure. And it's a weird and annoying coincidence - they are basically the same thing, #Sony all-in-one bookshelf #stereo systems. You know the type, they're on the order of a cubic foot and look like a small stack of stereo equipment units, but it's just a cosmetic look. Inside, the tuner, preamp, amp, CD player / changer, tape deck are all one thing. #Boombox in a suit, basically.
Both times, I figured out what was wrong - but I couldn't get to the bits I needed to actually fix them. I got stumped trying to take the front #fascia off the chassis. There's usually a few screws to take the back and/or top off, and then some #clips holding the front fascia to the (usually) one-piece sheet metal sides and bottom. Taking a #spudger to them releases all along the top and sides, but at the bottom of the fascia, it doesn't release - there's something weird about the clips I can't see, and I don't see any #screws responsible, inside or out. I don't want to force it more than I have because it will break.
Any Sony-heads out there know the secret with these things? They're from the 80s and 90s, at least the ones brought into me.

Last #repaircafe #repair: local #ISDN phone exchange with audio issues from approx. 2004. Three electrolytic caps were definetely bad with internal resistance of at least 20 Ohms. They were right next to voltage regulators that idle at 50°C. No way to test it, but voltages are stabile again and the ripple voltage is now at <1% so I hope that was a successfull fix.
9 Watt idle for 22 Years, thats nearly 2 MWh!

Live in #Regina? Have something that's #broken and you'd like it fixed? How about getting it fixed for #free?
Regina has a Repair Cafe! It started a year or so ago. I started volunteering when I found out about it. The volunteers are all great people, and between them they seem to fix a lot of stuff - everything from garment #repair to bicycles to power tools to electronics, and more.
I'm not an official spokesman or anything - I just volunteer. But if you're in the #YQR area, you can get the date and location of the next repair cafe from this webpage:

There's also a link from there to where you can sign up for a repair spot. Walk-ins are taken as possible, but reserved timeslots are served first.
As I write this, the next one is on Saturday 21 March at the Circle Project, 3433 5th Ave. I haven't actually looked where that is yet, must do that.
Anyway - come get stuff fixed for free, by friendly folk in a relaxed atmosphere. And save one more thing from ending up in the #landfill.

Good question! Some ideas:
* Volunteer for an organization offering Linux help in your area (#RepairCafe, #LinuxUserGroup, #CryptoParty, etc.).
* Organize an install event with a #Library, #CommunityCenter, etc.
* Consider opening a #LinuxCafe (see here for some input https://invent.kde.org/websites/endof10-org/-/issues/120)
Whatever you do, let us know about it so we can promote it in the context of the #EndOf10 !

Im Rahmen eines berufsschulinternen Kongresses der IT-Berufe bieten wir eine Art #RepairCafe an - und wollen dort auch "alte"(sic!) Notebooks aktualisieren (Win10-Supportende). Hat von Euch jemand noch die Live-Systeme auf USB, die man in BI ausleihen kann? (PS: falls von Euch jemand am Do/Fr (30./31.1.) noch spontan eine Session (20-40min) halten kann - sehr gerne!). @Datenpunks @acmelabs

My #Roland #U110 is behaving strange. Has somebody dealt with anything like this before? The image shows strange characters on the display of the unit where the name of the selected tone should be.
