  2. #Waiheke #RepairCafé

    27 Sept 2026, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

1A Mako Street, Oneroa, Auckland 1081, New Zealand

"Join us for another Repair Café on Waiheke!

A collaboration between #IslandWasteCollective, Waiheke Resources Trust and #RepairCaféAotearoa #NewZealand!

We will have volunteer repairers who can help you fix:

    - Electrical items
    - Clothing
    - Bikes
    - Jewellery
    - Small furniture
    - Tools
    - Toys
    - and much more...

Feel free to email us if you are not sure if you can bring your item and we will confirm if we have the right person available who can help

    Please note:

Jewellery repairs will be available from 11 am
Usually, we allow 30 minutes per item for repair or diagnostics, and we generally recommend bringing no more than two items per person. If there’s no one waiting, we can sometimes squeeze in a little extra time for you.
A quick reminder about the Repair Café vibe: it’s not a drop‑off service where you leave your item and head out for a coffee or a beach walk. The whole magic of a Repair Café is in connecting, learning, and fixing things together, so it’s important that you stay with your item while one of our volunteers helps you out.

We’re lucky to have an amazing team with a huge range of skills and talent. To give you an idea of what happens at a typical event, at one of our our last Repair Cafés we:

    • Assessed 69 items
    • Successfully repaired 53
    • Provided expert advice for 7 future fixes

Please bring #koha as the donation supports the volunteers time for advice and repairing of your item

Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected]

    See you there!

Registration: Please RSVP for this event by heading to the learn more button so we know how many people to expect
    Audience: Open to all

  4. Can we fix it? Yes, #RepairFest suggests

    By Times Team
    September 20, 2026

"Ending is not better than mending, the #RepairFestivalAotearoa is set to prove.

"With more than 50 events, including in Waiuku, the festival will help Kiwis keep items our landfills and cash in our wallets, organiser Brigitte Sistig confirms.

" 'We want New Zealanders to think twice about replacing an item if it can be repaired. Every successful repair reduces demand for new, often carbon-heavy, goods,' she says.

" 'Repair Festival Aotearoa gives people access to repair and aims to shift consumer habits by encouraging repair over replacement. This is especially important at a time of rising economic pressures.'

"Run by local volunteers – including #craftspeople – the events are covering repairs to everything from clothing to electronics.

"In addition, repairing is beneficial for mental health, Sistig says.

" 'An often-overlooked benefit of a #RepairCulture is that it is incredibly rewarding and confidence building, thereby contributing to our wellbeing. Engaging in hands-on fixing provides people with a sense of purpose, mental agility and a wish to help others, which builds a sense of belonging and more #resilient communities,' she adds.

" 'By slowing down to fix what we own and love, we aren’t just saving money or preventing environmental waste, we are actively lowering our stress levels, boosting our personal happiness, and building stronger communities.'

"Locally, the festival involves the Waiuku UFO Crafting Circle (September 21) and Waiuku Repair Café (September 26). Click link below for a full list of events."

  12. Online Workshop - #Aotearoa / #NewZealand - Why can't I fix my #WashingMachine?

    15 Sept 2026, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

"How New Zealanders are getting a bad deal on repair – and what the UK shows is possible.

When a washing machine fails, dirty laundry piles up while owners wait weeks for an authorised repairer. Even simple faults can become expensive repairs once call-out fees and labour charges are added.

Yet many common repairs are straightforward. Replacing a door gasket, detergent hose or drain pump doesn't require specialist qualifications – just basic tools, practical skills, and access to the right information and parts.

We investigated ten popular washing machine brands in New Zealand, grading each manufacturer on whether owners can access repair manuals and purchase spare parts. We found a pattern of barriers that prevent owners from carrying out simple repairs themselves.

Then we repeated the investigation in the UK using the same manufacturers.

The results were dramatically different. Many brands that restrict repair support in New Zealand provide UK consumers with detailed manuals, online parts catalogues, stock availability and direct ordering.

The barriers to repair are not technical or logistical. Manufacturers already have the systems needed to support repair – they simply choose not to make them available to New Zealand consumers."

    19 Sept 2026
    10:40 am – 12:00 pm

569 Ferguson Street, Terrace End, Palmerston North 4410, New Zealand

"Join us for this workshop alongside our 19 September #PalmerstonNorth #RepairCafé, at the Palmerston North Community Leisure Centre, as part of #RepairFestivalAotearoa.

    The workshop will cover:
    Cleaning your sewing machine
Oiling and what not to oil, type of oil to use
    Setting tensions
    Needle and thread selection

Daryl will have sewing machines there to demonstrate. He says that most problems with sewing machines are related to dirt, needles and not oiling properly.

Please feel free to bring along fabric or material which gives an example of your sewing challenges. So if your overlocking is not nice and even, or you have challenges with grinning stitches (where it pulls apart after sewing)."

Every second Sunday of the month, the #SouthCanterbury #EcoCentre turns into a busy little workshop powered by generous community volunteers. One volunteer might be fixing a lamp, another patching someone’s favourite jeans, while nearby a bike gets tuned up and someone learns a new sewing skill over a cup of tea.

Our volunteer repairers help give broken, damaged, and well-loved items a second chance. It’s also a chance to learn new skills, build community connections, and share conversations with others."

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — "Software engineer Josh Dersch loves old computers. He spends countless hours tinkering in his garage, trying to coax decades-old machines back to life. He estimates he owns more than 200 vintage computers and devices in his Seattle home.

" 'It’s always been fascinating to me to see the origins of things,' Dersch said. 'It’s a fun challenge to debug and repair. You can understand the entire system from top to bottom.' "

This event is held in collaboration with the the City of Ottawa and is FREE OF CHARGE. This listing is for information purposes only. All registration occurs onsite. You DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER via Eventbrite, but a donation to support these great initiatives is always appreciated and helps cover expenses for volunteers. Note that if you kindly donate it does not mean you get to skip the line or show up as we are closing down with the expectation that someone will see your item.

Support provided from EPRA enables us to safely recycle any items that are not able to be repaired at the Repair Café."

  25. #WasteReduction & The #CircularEconomy in #Aotearoa / #NewZealand

Excerpt: Embracing the Circular Economy in NZ

"Traditionally, our economy operates on a linear ‘take-make-dispose’ model. Resources are extracted, products are manufactured, consumed, and then thrown away. The circular economy, however, aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of their service life.

'The circular economy isn’t just about #recycling; it’s a fundamental rethinking of how we design, produce, and consume, creating a system that is #restorative and #regenerative by design.'

"For New Zealand, embracing this model is more than an environmental choice; it’s an economic imperative. By reducing our reliance on virgin resources and minimising waste, we can build a more #resilient, innovative, and #sustainable economy, perfectly aligned with #Māori principles of #kaitiakitanga – #guardianship of the land and resources."
