what have we here? that's a tar-covered "dead" #Macbook Pro 15 2011 I got for next to nothing. although ancient, the quad-core i7 still can be used for a plethora of activities; they take up to 16 GB DDR3 and can run two SATA drives, with disabled Radeon graphics they are fine #Linux machines.
the stank is... otherworldly, this dude is due for a thorough clean and repaste. before that though we need to make it run, which is hella hard without 85 W Magsafe 1 (ain't got it) and an original A1382 battery (guess what?)
what we do have is a battery from the previous 2009/10 vintage, the A1321. they are electrically compatible but the polarity is inverted, because Apple. so what youse beholding is my #hardwaregore solder job that patched the old battery to fit the new model. fanspin, screen lights up and there's the chime - goody gumdrops!
my old trick with temporary extracting the magsafe connector works, we can now utilise a Magsafe 2 charger until the thing is at least somewhat charged. later on, a 60 W charger will suffice.
the battery is in spectacular condition and it gave me zero problems. the almost 7000 mAh capacity took ages to charge using a non-adequate 60 W charger, need to check if everything is cool with my solderings just in case, maybe that makes it slower?
got a dead Hi-Res model of the same vintage. thought about transplanting just the matte screen, but since the gunky mobo is coming out anyway for cleaning, why not transplant the board into a *cleaner* case. so, that's what's happening!
also got a localized dead keyboard I'm gonna use to transplant some keycaps over, had about enough of the weird layouts from all over. unclipping em is hella finicky but usually works. and if it don't - plenty of replacement keys.
this has got to be the last 2011 with functioning Radeon graphics. it's so old it still has the ATI logo and as such is a nightmare to run in linux, with constant glitches and other issues in a modern wayland install. so, disabling it (kills video out) makes the laptop use the still adequate Intel HD 3000 graphics with way less power consumption and heat.
final addition should be 2x 8 GB DDR3 RAM modules and a 500 GB SSD SATA drive, but those aren't cheap, would cost me about $70 best case scenario and the whole thing's worth like $100 total, if that. so I'll keep a lookout for some swap opportunities for PC components I got #dumpsterdiving.

Think I'm going to film myself trying to fix this stuck glue stick in my Ryobi glue gun. Need something to put on MakerTube besides short Arduino clips #Righttorepair #Ifixit

Bought a second-hand #ThinkPad L14 Gen 2a (#AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U). Plenty fast enough for what I do, at about 15% of the price of a current model.
Installed #FedoraLinux and, so far, everything works, even the fingerprint reader. Repairable, upgradeable, and a small reminder that we don't always need the latest hardware.

@tj Completely agree that these should need to be published by law!
Also, the reason I opted for the age-old Gaggia Classic with a manual grinder. I can get every part and repair it when needed.
And don't get me started on the fact that you can not buy any "dumb TV" anymore...

The holy grail! A hydraulic diagram of my delonghi coffee machine. I've found the service manual. This will make everything infinitely easier. These documents should be published under law.

Of course, nowhere the EU councils mention the use of the financial revenues for the EU businesses.

Team Repair Breaks Things to Teach People How to Fix Them

Household domestic trivia
Yes, vacuuming. It's weekend (and electricity prices are negative for me, but does that mean I should so it?) when I'm not so constrained by 'must do it now' demands of others (work).
I broke my vacuum cleaner's head, probably by stepping on it in the dark, and it's an upright Dyson Animal Ball, so they're stopped doing that now, and no parts are officially available.

I noticed today that my @frameworkcomputer 13 frame was coming apart. 5 captive screws later and I could see the battery was swollen!
Replacement ordered from their marketplace (can purchase and replace/upgrade all parts individually) and a QR code on the battery linking to the replacement guide.
This is the reason I bought this laptop, things go wrong but Framework don't treat that as a new laptop sale!

I've been using my iFixit precision bit kit for years to crack open phones, laptops, and random electronics that had no business being that hard to open. Today, completely out of nowhere, it finally clicked. The kits come in sets of 16, 32, or 64 bits. Not 15. Not 20. Not some "nice round number for humans."
16, 32, 64. As in literal computer bits.
Well played, iFixit. Well played. 😅

Finally got around to helping a friend with a phone repair today: shattered back glass + new battery on an iPhone 15 Pro.
Waterproofing + glue everywhere made getting inside an absolute nightmare. Removing the shattered back glass was the worst part. Tiny shards everywhere, so much tedious, careful work. 😩
Job's done, phone's fixed, but that was NOT a fun repair.
Seriously though, why do manufacturers keep using brittle glass for the backs of $1000+ phones? Sturdy plastic would survive drops so much better and repairs wouldn't be a shard-hunting nightmare.

I like keeping old tech as long as possible. My desktop PC is a Dell Optiplex 9020, which I intercepted on its way to e-waste from a local primary school. Maybe a 2013 model. I just did a bit of minor maintenance, replacing the CMOS battery. Now I don't have to manually select UEFI mode at every boot.
Previously I souped it up a bit, adding a SSD. There was no slot for an additional device and I wanted to keep the big drive, so the SSD just floats between the drive bay and the CPU fan. Seems to be a perfectly cromulent way of doing it.

If You Own It, Why Can't You Fix It?
~"Corps are making it harder for you to repair the devices you already own, & forcing you to pay for repairs & replacements. Costs consumers millions worldwide, sends tons of perfectly fixable items to landfills, & hands big tech control over your property. Join #AdamSavage and our friends at #iFixit to dive into how manufacturers lock you out of the stuff you own, how the #RightToRepair movement is fighting back, & what you can do."

In other news: let's fix my bicycle tire, that slowly deflates since a couple of days.
Either related to me falling down while cycling in a dark area of Berlin or cycling through Bauarbeiten which I missed until the road dropped 10cm as it wasn't finished yet. Both in the span of 30 minutes. That was generally not a good evening.

Great to hear Kay Dean of #FakeReviewWatch discussing fake review with #rightToRepair and #rightToOwn advocate #LouisRossmann today. I’m looking forward to seeing what other consequences WeRecoverData will have brought upon themselves.

John Deere billed a Montana rancher $4,000 for a $600 repair — because he wasn't "authorized" to fix his own tractor. Farmers organized, sued, and won this month.
