  1. I rescued a HP #ProBook 440 g3 from the landfill. I first installed #Kubuntu 26.04 with a 1 TB HHD. #KDE looked slick and performed decent on it, but only 4GB of RAM caused it to hang too often. So I switched it to a 60GB SSD with #Ubuntu #MATE 24.04 and it performs well enough, it doesn't fly but it will do. Wish I could see how Windows was running on this about 14 year old laptop to compare. Man I love open source, getting to save tech for a few more years.

  15. Hat jemand Erfahrung mit #Linux auf einem HP #ProBook #Notebook? Dachte an #Ubuntu.

Gen tauschen wollen. Auch nicht das neueste, aber deutlich moderner.

  16. Today is a big day! We managed to fix the hp probook x360 11 g5 ee. It was a pain in the *** to do it though. We had to find the bios chip buy a eep rom programmer spi flash programmer (the weird usb device) to dump erase and rewrite the bios . To use some soldering to connect some strings as well. At the end we had to use rcunlocker as explained on this website badcaps.net/forum/troubleshoot as well as IMGProg . #IMGProg #probook x360 11 g5 ee #rcunlocker . We now can remove the old windows put decent linux. This computer got "saved" but how many computer got just thrown away like this one because of those silly password and awful procedures to get factory reset?

  21. Any #IT support in #Uppsala? found a laptop #hp #probook x360 11 g5 ee in the sopstuga. Hardware works, windows starts very slowly to the session of some young woman who lives nearby... We want to boot it on a linux usb but it refuses to do so. I try to access the #bios but it is password protected even removing all batteries does not reset password. What would you do about it? I wonder as well if i could /should contact my neighbour who throwed it to ask, but i am scared to freak her out. It seems to be a laptop that used to be from a her school in #uppsala but I have no idea which one the only clue is a message to connect to " SKOLNET " #skolnet #nvram

  27. I'm still getting great service from my HP ProBook (S-series) 4530s, that I bought in October 2011 (I've still got the email and invoice from when I ordered it!). It had 4GB RAM and a 250GB HDD, I've since doubled the RAM and replaced the HDD with an SSD. It's currently rocking Manjaro Cinnamon, which seems to suit it better than Linux Mint did - don't ask me why! Even after all these years, it still looks as good as it did when new - I never mistreat my hardware!

  31. Today I am working on a system migration from an older laptop to a slightly newer laptop.

Customer bought a #ThinkPad T420 from me quite a few years ago. Had a 1TB hard disk drive in it, so had to be quite a while as I switched to selling laptops only with SSDs at least five years ago now.

Laptop was working fine, hard drive was still healthy with no bad sectors, but the hinge broke.

They wanted to keep the same installation with all their programs, games, settings and data. Had Windows 10 Pro.

I took the hard drive out of the physically damaged ThinkPad and put it in a refurbished #HP #ProBook 450 G3 laptop, which will be the replacement laptop.

Took a while to boot up to Windows, as the operating system had to detect and recognize the different hardware. Rebooted and then got to the login screen.

Logged in, installed the #Samsung System Migration Tool. The used a USB 3.0 to SATA adapter and connected a 1TB Samsung SATA SSD. Did the System Migration process from the HDD to the SSD.

Shut it down, then did the physical installation of the SSD. At the same time, I double the memory from 8GB to 16GB, as the customer had requested that upgraded. Started the laptop again. HP BIOS recognized that the amount of memory (RAM) had changed. Pressed enter to acknowledge and the laptop rebooted, loaded Windows to the login screen.

I now am running #Windows Update and installing the missing drives (only three of them).

It'll be a much faster system than what they had and will meet their needs, as they wanted a faster laptop that would be better for working with spreadsheets.

The HP ProBook 450 G3 is a 15.6 inch laptop and has the dedicated number keypad, which the ThinkPad T420 did not. That hardware feature often makes data entry in spreadsheets easier.

Going to be putting #LinuxMint on another one of these ProBook laptops for another customer. Hoping to get that done and his date moved from Windows to the Linux installation before tomorrow afternoon. I should be able to get that done.

This model of laptop is also one of the options in my monthly computer giveaway:

  36. A refurbished business class laptop. I am liking #HP #EliteBook and #ProBook models right now. #ThinkPad laptops have been a favorite, too, but I use them much less now than I used to.

    I am considering the HP EliteBook 820 G2 or EliteBook 830 G5.

  41. @matthew #ProBook turned out to be an amazing machine for me. I've been using ThinkPads and MacBook Pros for the most part of my life. I got 430 G1 for free, and I didn't expect to like it, but I have upgraded it with 16 Gbs of RAM and a terabyte SSD, installed Void and now it's a capable machine. Keyboard layout takes a while to get used to, but I actually like this compact laptop.
I'm thinking of getting a second M2 SSD and an SD card for swap partition to reduce SSD wear — 16 gigs is more than enough for me so it's mostly used for hibernation.
  42. Yesterday, I helped a customer of mine migrate from using #Google #Chrome to #firefox. Also, at her request, changed the default search engine from Google to #duckduckgo ( not perfect, I know, but less obnoxious than Google, in my opinion ).

Her husband decided to replace his aging laptop with one of my refurbished #HP #ProBook laptops with #Linux ( Linux Mint Debian Edition ).

Small steps in the right direction.
