Things I will buy #secondhand so far:
* Phones (in my case #Pixel phones for #GrapheneOS)
* Laptops (I really don't need the latest hardware, especially when running Linux)
* Bikes (got my folding bike used)Due to inflation etc. people will resort to buy secondhand more and more to not feel like they're getting ripped off. Even vintage/secondhand clothing stores in #Vienna feel like a rip-off, so I've got mixed feelings about that.

Unsere Familie kauft aus grundsätzlichen Erwägungen seit viele Jahren quasi ausschließlich gebrauchte Technik; ich meine, ich hätte unlängst 1 oder allenfalls 2 Teamgeräte neu gekauft.
Dabei kann ich Kind und meine größere Hälfte um Support fragen.

Pixel Watch 2 - Privacy Preserving Setup
I've been trying everything i could think of to make the watch work under GrapheneOS - Here is what i learned:
- Unpairing the Watch means factory resetting it.
- Every feature (literally everything) is google dependent (who would have thought.. i know)
- Pairing with your phone requires the "Pixel Watch" -App to be installed on your main profile (not work, not private space) alongside Google Play Services. There's no way around.
This is obviously unacceptable. So i did a bit of research and found a way that will not only be way more practical, it will also be private.
First i created a second user on my Phone, installed Google Play Services and the pixel watch app on it, logged in with a newly created google account and completed the setup.
I know some people use a chinese version of the WearOS app to bypass the google login. Since i don't want a chinese app to configure my watch, i didn't even try that.
After the watch was set up, i continued and:
- Deleted the user profile from which i connected the Watch
- Enabled wireless debugging
- Debloated the watch as good as possible (i will have to root the watch in the future to properly do it)
- Removed the Google account in the settings
- Cleared all Bluetooth preferences
- Enabled Bluetooth discovery
- Installed KDE Connect on it (not meant for WearOS but it does work barely)
The watch is now in a state where i can use it daily.
But i also want to make use of all those fancy quality-of-life features, like heartrate monitoring, sleep tracking and so on.
Now comes the fun part.
I've created a basic Kotlin project with both a mobile and WearOS app.
I will implement features like:
- Notification sync
- Call notifications
- Media Player Control
- Weather (openweathermap)
- Heartrate monitoring
- Sleep tracking
- Do not Distrurb Sync
- Homelab integrations (Nextcloud, Immich, Uptime Kuma, ..)
- And much more ..
The goal is to keep the watch offline, let the phone do the heavy lifting and communicate with a selfhosted database. I may even add a frontend and an API so people can integrate it for their needs.
Sounds good but why don't you just buy an #opensource #smartwatch like the #pinetime - You may ask.
Because as much as i hate to admit it, i love the design, the look and feel of the pixel watch. And i'm sure that i'm not the only one.
I also bought this one cheap for around 120€ #refurbished. So the value i can get out of it seems pretty good to me.
So much for today. I haven't even started tackling the Bluetooth connection yet 😅. Let's see how that turns out
I have added a poll to this post to see how many people would be interested in a setup like this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, ideas or expertise in that regard.

I just bought a #refurbished #Google #Pixelwatch2 to try to build my own "Pixel Watch" companion app. Can i make the Pixel Watch 2 work with faked API's? How much can i improve the privacy ? So many ideas. That will be a fun project!

Es ist immer so schade, wenn #refurbished -Produkte nicht so funktionieren, wie sie sollen. Kabellose Tastatur gekauft. Akku kaputt. Also wieder zurück damit.
Das ist doch das erste, was man eigentlich überprüft, ob bei einem Gerät die Stromversorgung klappt.

If you ever find yourself in a situation like me, where you have a very small stripped screw, in a very tight and sensitive area of an electronic device, you might be able to extract it by using this magic tool.
Basically you drill a new hole into the screw, then use the other side to unscrew it. Well, in my case, I didn't even have to use the unscrew side. Just the side that drills was enough to extract it without any damage to any other components. Recommended 10/10.
NOTE: please follow the manufacturer instructions, and don't blame me for any damage.

Gerade kam der bestellte refurbished Lenovo T490 Laptop an und natürlich ist Win11 vorinstalliert.
Da das Gerät vorrangig für meine Kinder und die Schule sein wird, war mein Plan, Win11 als Zweitsystem für Notfälle zumindest zeitweise zu dulden.
Gerade schon bei der Einrichtung vergeht mir allerdings die Laune, da das System ohne ein Microsoft Konto die Instalallation verweigert.

Ich habe den in meine enge Auswahl gezogen als #refurbished gezogen.
Nun sehe ich gerade, dass der nur eine #WXGA Auflösung (1366x768) unterstützt. Andere 14" Laptops (z.B. HP Elitebook 840) unterstützen #FullHD (1920x1080)
Nun frage ich mich, ob der nur falsch ausgezeichnet ist, oder ob da unterschiedliche Auflösungen gibt, oder ob der T480 tatsächlich nur WXGA kann.

Last night, someone mentioned his ThinkCentre for his homelab. And since then I've been searching the web for different solutions for a homelab, mostly thin clients. There are interesting low-cost offers. One of my favourites at the moment are HP t640 because of their embedded Ryzen CPUs. But as soon as I look for just a small upgrade the price "skyrockets" from 80 Euro for the t640 to 190 Euro for the t740. When looking for new hardware there's currently an offer for the Acemagic K1 with a Ryzen 5 7430U barebones for 210 Euro and with 16GB/512GB for 280 Euro. This CPU has much more power than the older embedded ones while still running with a 15W TDP.

The hype I am seeing for "refurbished" or "renewed" hard drives for NAS usage seems like false economy to me. These drives need to be a heaps cheaper than they are to be the bargain that youtubers and tech blogs are saying they are. Some of these drives have in excess of 10,000 power on hours. It's been spinning for over a year and you're paying 80% of the original price?!

I find it #hilarious that the official #Apple #Canada store has "#refurbished" -- i.e., #used -- #Macs that go up to $10k, without even considering the "pro" line. And those are only M2s! Oh, and they're Studios, so that doesn't include the #monitor. Or #keyboard. Or #mouse. Or anything but the power cord...
