Linux Mint : Faire les mises à niveau majeures sans avoir à taper une seule ligne de commande

Bonjour,

Linux Mint a deux types de mises à niveau :

1. Les mises à niveau mineures qui sortent tous les 6 mois environ : 22.1, 22.2, 22.3…
2. Les mises à niveau majeures qui sont mises à dispositions tous les 2 ans environ : 21, 22, 23 etc…

Pour les premières, elles se font intégralement en graphique et sont simple à appliquer. En soi, il y a pas de changement sur la base utilisée et elles proposent les nouveautés concernant le bureau (Cinnamon) et les outils mis en place par l’équipe de Mint (ex : Warpinator).

Pour les versions majeures, le gros changement est la base Ubuntu utilisée, la 22 est basée 24.04 et la 23 qui devrait sortir à la fin de l’année, sera basée sur 26.04.

Pour passer d’une version majeure à une autre, une mise à niveau est nécessaire et celle-ci demande une attention particulière, comme vous pourrez le voir ici pour le passage de la version 21.3 à 22.

Les mises à niveau majeures sont aujourd’hui le gros point noir de Linux Mint. En effet, la distribution est souvent recommandée pour les personnes démarrant l’aventure sur Linux car elle est facile à utiliser et prête à l’emploi. Ce qui est vrai dans la plupart des cas sauf quand on parle des mises à niveau.

En soi, sur ce processus, voici ce que l’on peut reprocher :

1. Pas de notification (ou même d’information dans les relevés du système) pour indiquer qu’une mise à niveau majeure est disponible et à effectuer.
2. L’outil de mise à niveau (mintupgrade) n’est pas installé par défaut, bien qu’installable via la logithèque.
3. Il faut lancer l’outil via un terminal car aucun lanceur (raccourci) n’est présent dans le menu d’applications

En Mars 2024, j’avais fait un ticket pour demander d’ajouter une entrée dans le menu des applications afin de simplifier les actions et surtout que l’utilisateur n’ait pas à lancer une commande dans un terminal.

Celui-ci est resté sans réponse et j’ai eu l’idée de le relancer récemment. Et en reprenant le sujet plus sérieusement, je me suis aperçu d’une chose : Un lanceur est déjà prévu et bien créé lors de l’installation de l’outil :

Et c’est l’option NoDisplay=true (surlignée dans la capture ci-dessus) qui fait que celui-ci n’apparaît pas dans le menu d’applications. En changeant la valeur true par false, on a alors la possibilité de lancer l’outil sans toucher au terminal :

En cliquant sur l’outil présent dans le menu, il y aura alors un terminal qui s’ouvrira et la seule action à faire côté utilisateur sera alors de taper son mot de passe pour accéder à l’outil graphique, tout en conservant à côté le terminal pour avoir les logs. Cela permet de voir que cela continue de travailler durant certaines phases assez longues et de récupérer les éventuelles erreurs.

Si cela ne révolutionne pas tout le processus, cela enlève une étape et le rend plus accessible.

Ci-dessous les étapes à réaliser pour afficher le menu de mise à niveau dans le menu des applications :

Tout d’abord, si cela n’a pas déjà été fait, il faut installer l’outil Mintupgrade via la logithèque :

Une fois fait, vous aurez alors le fichier correspondant au lanceur dans /usr/share/applications sous le nom de Outil de mise à niveau. Deux choix s’offrent ensuite à vous :

1. Modifier le fichier en question directement
2. Copier ce fichier dans votre profil local (dans /home/NOMDESESSION/.local/share/applications) pour le modifier et ne pas toucher à l’original

Personnellement, j’ai opté pour la 2nd méthode, ça permet d’avoir une sauvegarde du fichier d’origine en cas d’erreur et également de ne pas altérer ce qui est fourni par défaut ou encore s’assurer que celui-ci ne soit pas modifié/écrasé avec une mise à jour future de l’outil.

Pour effectuer cette action, vous pouvez le faire graphiquement avec votre gestionnaire de fichier en affichant les dossiers masqués (Ctrl+H). Ou encore en ouvrant un terminal et en copiant juste cette ligne de commande :

cp /usr/share/applications/mintupgrade.desktop /home/$USER/.local/share/applications && sed -i 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/' /home/$USER/.local/share/applications/mintupgrade.desktop

Si vous souhaitez supprimer le fichier créé et/ou l’entrée dans le menu, vous pouvez le faire avec votre gestionnaire de fichiers ou entrant cette commande dans un terminal :

rm -f /home/$USER/.local/share/applications/mintupgrade.desktop

Ich habe ein aktuelle Thinkpad X13 mit Fingerabdruckleser und würde den unter Linux Mint gerne auch zum Anmelden nutzen.

Leider bietet mit den Anmeldedialog das nicht an, obwohl ich später - nach dem Login - alle Authentifizierungen mit dem Fingerabdruck durchführen kann.

Ich bin echt gespannt, wie sich die #Barrierefreiheit für blinde Menschen unter #Linux entwickeln wird. Unter #KDE Plasma wird immer mehr über den Screenreader Orca auslesbar. Orca selbst verbessert sich auch nach und nach. #LinuxMint legt auch ordentlich nach. Wie es unter #GNOME aussieht, kann ich aber leider nicht sagen. Würde aber mal vermuten, dass es dort auch besser wird.

Linux Mint v3.0 “Cassandra” on VMware Workstation

As we have tested Linux Mint v1.0, v2.0, v2.1, and v2.2, this is a very interesting journey of the history of Linux Mint that started small. As a reminder, Linux Mint focuses on ease of use while providing appeal to desktop users, and is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu.

Linux Mint v3.0 is a third major version of this distribution, and the branding has changed again, and it lasted long until the 2021 rebrand. This version of Linux Mint can be downloaded here.

Please note that this version is not officially supported since it’s an ancient version that was released on May 30th.

Let’s configure the virtual machine like this:

Now, the bootloader screen shows up with the old logo of Linux Mint that was used until 2021.

Now, let’s boot it up.

In our case, the GNOME error that appeared in the upper left corner says that there was a problem while GNOME was trying to start its settings daemon. Let’s install Linux Mint using the installer icon.

This is the first step, which is the language selection step. Just choose your language, then click Forward.

After that, choose your region on the map and press Forward.

Choose your keyboard layout that matches your keyboard, the press Forward.

You can choose either the guided partitioning, which automatically creates partitions, or the manual partitioning method. Since this is a fresh installation, we’ll go ahead with guided partitioning.

The above screen shows the migration wizard for users or operating systems. Since this is a fresh install, nothing will show up. This is completely normal, and installation can proceed.

Here, you can write your name, your user name, your host name, and your password. Afterwards, a summary screen appears like below.

After that, the installation starts until you’re asked to reboot the computer.

Now, we’ll restart the virtual machine to boot to Linux Mint v3.0. The below screen should show up.

Log in to your username and your password, and the desktop should show up, just like this:

You can verify that this version of Linux Mint is using version 2.6.20.
