Been using a Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook with 11th gen. Intel i3/8gb RAM upgraded to 512gb ssd since early 2023 as my main computer.

It's still running fine and gets the job done, but I'm jealous of My wife's m1 MacBook Air hardware.

Had a bunch of 'credit' on Amazon from a work program. Saw a refurb HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook i7 12th gen /32gb/512gb that I could cover with the credit. Ordered it.

A - so, is it "good" for "them" or "us" or "business" or what. Is it almost trying to make it feel like that sort of "no side loading" type of feeling? Or force people to use the terminal or. Or make it so "dummies" don't install bad things by accident or something? Or is it none of the above or some of the above or we just don't know? Hm. I wonder. bc it was kinda nice having the gui installation capability and this feels like a downgrade. Hm. But even if it is some of the above, and have them force users to the terminal for *initial installation* it doesn't make sense to force users to the terminal for *software updates* as software updates include security stuff that would be beneficial for all users even "dummies" or whatever. Like, sure, maybe the initial installation should require terminal, but the UI should support software updates via the gui.

Linux Mint microblog update:

Why not put Mint on a cheap Chromebook?

It's really difficult to get a modern Chromebook to boot to install media that isn't ChromeOs.

Really really difficult.

But once booted to the Linux Mint install media, things are just moving along with the usual chill simplicity...so far.

I will update again once I am finish.
(Update: No luck so far. But I will turn this into a thread with updates until my Chromebook runs some version of Linux.)

Also, I clicked past so many warranty voiding warnings.

I genuinely wouldn't bother if:

1. Google's terms of service were short enough to read.
2. Google had stayed out of my news feed for privacy concerns for, let's say, the past five years.

But lacking both of those, I'm going to continue to wipe Google's OS off of any device I use.

If you have some kind of device running #Android with keyboard+mouse input, you too will likely enjoy the changes as you should be able to likewise disable all touch-specific code too! The Android version still has some compiled out code for desktop-y concepts like window handling so your mileage may vary however.

...I'm also not sure how commonplace it is to have an Android device with non-touchscreen input. If you're on Chrome OS our typical recommendation is to install Principia inside of the Crostini Linux container. Or do as I did, flash the bootloader with Coreboot and install regular Linux onto it!

Wiele wskazuje na to, że Apple zaprezentuje w tym tygodniu urządzenie, o którym plotkowano od lat.

Zamiast skupiać się wyłącznie na rekordach wydajności w drogich modelach Pro, firma z Cupertino prawdopodobnie spróbuje swoich sił w segmencie tanich komputerów. Według nieoficjalnych doniesień, nowy MacBook ma stanowić pomost dla użytkowników, którzy dotychczas wybierali maszyny z systemem Windows lub tanie Chromebooki.

O budżetowym laptopie z logo nadgryzionego jabłka mówi się w kuluarach od niemal roku. Mark Gurman z agencji Bloomberg donosi, że sprzęt może być już gotowy do rynkowego debiutu. Jeśli przecieki się potwierdzą, maszyna zaoferuje aluminiową obudowę dostępną w wielu żywych wariantach kolorystycznych, co stanowiłoby wyraźny ukłon w stronę sektora edukacyjnego i młodszych klientów.

Architektura mobilna w komputerze osobistym

Aby obniżyć koszty produkcji, inżynierowie musieli pójść na pewne kompromisy. Z raportów wynika, że komputer zostanie wyposażony w nieco mniejszy, 12,9-calowy ekran, który prawdopodobnie będzie pozbawiony technologii True Tone i zaoferuje niższą jasność maksymalną niż modele z serii Air.

Wykorzystanie tego chipu w MacBooku to logiczny, strategiczny krok Apple w stronę unifikacji architektury i maksymalnego cięcia kosztów własnych. Z przecieków wynika, że procesorowi będzie towarzyszyć 8 GB pamięci RAM, a wbudowana przestrzeń na dane wyniesie 256 GB lub 512 GB.

Magnes na nowych klientów

Według źródeł Bloomberga, wewnątrz Apple panuje przekonanie, że nowy komputer zaoferuje rewelacyjny stosunek jakości do ceny. Firma ma nadzieję, że tak skalkulowany sprzęt przyciągnie osoby, które dotychczas korzystały z budżetowych maszyn konkurencji. Jeśli ten pułap się potwierdzi, będzie to najtańszy przenośny Mac od lat. Przewidywane zainteresowanie jest rzekomo tak duże, że pracownicy salonów Apple Store zostali już uprzedzeni o możliwych nadgodzinach w dniach premiery.

Maraton ogłoszeń startuje lada moment

Ile z tych plotek okaże się prawdą? Przekonamy się w ciągu najbliższych dni. Apple zaplanowało nietypowy, kilkudniowy maraton ogłoszeń, który wystartuje w poniedziałek, 2 marca, a zakończy się specjalnym wydarzeniem z udziałem mediów w środę, 4 marca. Oprócz budżetowego komputera, analitycy spodziewają się również odświeżonych modeli MacBooków Air i Pro z układami M5, nowych iPadów oraz premiery iPhone’a 17e.
