Working on Chromebook plus. I used the Appimage. There were a couple of workarounds.1) it doesn't work with ChromeOS Wayland, so I have to run as "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb NovelWriter.AppImage"
I symlink the current version to NovelWriter.AppImage so that I can upgrade and downgrade easily.
2) I had to "apt install enchant-2" to get the spellcheck to work. After that I created a .desktop file so that it appears in the ChromeOS App menu.
Chromebooks are cheap, light, and portable, and have a long battery life. You need one with the "Chromebook plus" specification to run Linux apps.

Been using a Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook with 11th gen. Intel i3/8gb RAM upgraded to 512gb ssd since early 2023 as my main computer.
It's still running fine and gets the job done, but I'm jealous of My wife's m1 MacBook Air hardware.
Had a bunch of 'credit' on Amazon from a work program. Saw a refurb HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook i7 12th gen /32gb/512gb that I could cover with the credit. Ordered it.

Guys, any hot tips to repair a corrupted USB stick before I hand it over to my father to run his forensic-level Lord High Computationer (shhh the syllables fit) sorcery? (I'm pretty sure I don't have anything SUPER private on it - but it's the principle of the thing!) (Also I like to fix things myself.)
I have a low-CPU machine running Linux Mint (noob user, though), a Chromebook that's just starting to go out-of-date, and standard Windows.
I'll give anything free a try! lol (Uhhh short of just formatting it and starting over. Nothing necessarily irretrievable(?) but would be a LOT of work…)

Repurposing Chromebooks
"With Android smartphones, Chromebooks are probably one of the most exemplary materialization of the cognitive dissonance taking place in the capitalist creative destruction driven ICT industry. These computers would not exist without plethora FLOSS and related projects, and at the same time all this technological openness is by design obfuscated and restricted to create an ecosystem that is as closed as possible, and designed for planned obsolescence. This approach has been championed by Google and the computer manufacturers producing these devices. Good job everyone 👍"

Ongelijkheid:

draft - ChromeOS - Re: GUI installation of .deb packages has been deprecated.
A - so, is it "good" for "them" or "us" or "business" or what. Is it almost trying to make it feel like that sort of "no side loading" type of feeling? Or force people to use the terminal or. Or make it so "dummies" don't install bad things by accident or something? Or is it none of the above or some of the above or we just don't know? Hm. I wonder. bc it was kinda nice having the gui installation capability and this feels like a downgrade. Hm. But even if it is some of the above, and have them force users to the terminal for *initial installation* it doesn't make sense to force users to the terminal for *software updates* as software updates include security stuff that would be beneficial for all users even "dummies" or whatever. Like, sure, maybe the initial installation should require terminal, but the UI should support software updates via the gui.

The feeling today:
When ChromeOs says one thing, but the Debian community says another.
(In fairness, the keyword in the warning is "supported", and I have actually heard nice things about Linux on ChromeOS, where it is supported.)

I quick update on my Linux Chromebook, after using it for a day or so:
1. I really don't recommend this approach. It's a needlessly complicated pain in the ass to clean Google's crap out far enough to install a privacy respecting OS. I recommend spending a little more than I did on hardware that isn't so antagonistic toward software freedom.
2. Dell makes good hardware, even in their Chromebook line-up. I've happily run Linux on Dell hardware many times before, so I shouldn't be so surprised.
Anyway, this thing drives like a VW bug modified for racing. It has no right to be this good.
My eternal thanks to the communities (and some Google engineers, too) who made projects like this possible. I'll continue to do my best to pay it forward where I can.

Summary:
Total cost: $40 on sale, plus about 4 hours of effort.
At my hourly rate that's...way too expensive, really.
I should have just bought a Tuxedo with Linux pre-installed. I would have saved time (and time is sometimes money) and gotten better hardware.
But it works!
Some lessons learned:
+ Google really doesn't want to allow booting a custom OS. There's lots of boot level "security". I am too annoyed to comment fairly, but considering that step one was to wipe all data, the words "security theater" come to mind for all of the crap that followed.
+ Linux Mint either doesn't work here, or got very unlucky.
+ Arch Linux stills scares me.
+ Ol' reliable: Debian brings home the win!Of course - building great operating systems is a collaboration, not a competition. (But Debian wins, anyway, tonight.)

Linux microblog update:
Dear Arch Linux,
Your guidance is amazing, until we reach the bit about choosing partitions.
Tonight I needed one single "good enough" recipe to start from - but I found a repeat of the ancient text "deep thoughts on partition tables".
Debian is looking nice, this time of year, though.

Linux Mint microblog update:
Why not put Mint on a cheap Chromebook?
It's really difficult to get a modern Chromebook to boot to install media that isn't ChromeOs.
Really really difficult.
But once booted to the Linux Mint install media, things are just moving along with the usual chill simplicity...so far.
I will update again once I am finish.
(Update: No luck so far. But I will turn this into a thread with updates until my Chromebook runs some version of Linux.)Also, I clicked past so many warranty voiding warnings.
I genuinely wouldn't bother if:
1. Google's terms of service were short enough to read.
2. Google had stayed out of my news feed for privacy concerns for, let's say, the past five years. But lacking both of those, I'm going to continue to wipe Google's OS off of any device I use.

If you have some kind of device running #Android with keyboard+mouse input, you too will likely enjoy the changes as you should be able to likewise disable all touch-specific code too! The Android version still has some compiled out code for desktop-y concepts like window handling so your mileage may vary however.
...I'm also not sure how commonplace it is to have an Android device with non-touchscreen input. If you're on Chrome OS our typical recommendation is to install Principia inside of the Crostini Linux container. Or do as I did, flash the bootloader with Coreboot and install regular Linux onto it!
