  1. #WinchesterMA - Winchester #RepairCafe

    Saturday, August 29th

    Appointments from 9am - 12:00pm

    First Congregational Church
    21 Church St.
    Winchester, MA

"There may be a long wait,so it is always better to make an appointment to be seen.

Please bring us your unwanted TV remote controls as we can repurpose them and give them a new life.

If you have repair skills and love a challenge, join our team of volunteer #menders and #mentors.

    - The mission of Repair Café is for experienced menders to share their knowledge while demonstrating repairs, so our clients leave feeling empowered to try repairing themselves. We aim to spread the word that repairing and renovating can be FUN!
    - Given the increased interest in Repair Café, appointments are limited to helping the client within the allotted 1/2 hour appointment time. Repairs and/or mending that require more time will need to be finished by the client.

Please check the volunteer skills we can offer at this Repair Cafe and choose the one that matches the item you need to repair most closely. Each volunteer will show you how to repair your item, using their tools. You will learn the skills to finish repairing your object at home if we run out of time.

It would help us if you can indicate the type of repair you are bringing in, so we can be more prepared. For example, 'torn seam in red dress' then we can have red thread available. 'Old, faded jeans needing a patch' so we can have the right color patch handy.

    Please remember:

    - One person per repair.
    - Each time slot is 30 minutes long, starting at 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Up to two repair slots can be made per person.
    - We will do our best to repair your item but sometimes it may not be fixable.
    - Any spare parts (batteries, etc) will need to be provided by you. You can buy spare parts at Fells Hardware on Main Street.

    Sign-up for appointments recommended."

  3. #USPIRG - #ElectronicWaste Graveyard

Expiring software or server support is responsible for up to 1.7 billion pounds of #EWaste over past decade.

    by Nathan Proctor, Lucas Gutterman
    April 10, 2025, Updated Jul 14, 2026

"Increasingly, we’re pushed to trash tech that should still work, such as #Chromebooks, phones, and smart home devices, just because the software has expired or lost support. This database lists more than 100 tech products that have stopped working after manufacturers dropped support. It calculates the total weight of all these dead devices which have joined the 68 million tons of electronic waste disposed of each year.

"When software expires, or web cloud services end, consumers and schools are pushed to replace devices that should still work. For example, our 'Chromebook Churn' report found that tens of thousands of laptops were being replaced by schools because the software had expired. Since the graveyard was released in 2025, we have tracked a wave of new product shutdowns, some affecting a handful of niche gadgets, and one, Microsoft’s end of support for Windows 10, affecting 400 million computers at once.

"We now estimate that up to 1.7 billion pounds of electronic waste has been created by expired software and canceled cloud services since 2014. The largest contributor by far was the expiration of #Windows10 resulting in up to 1.6 billion pounds of electronic waste from PCs that can’t upgrade to #Windows11.

"13 #AmazonKindle models have also joined the graveyard this year. On May 20, 2026, Amazon cut off store access for 13 older Kindle models released between 2007 and 2012 — devices that, in many cases, are still being used daily by their original owners more than a decade later. The e-readers still turn on, still display books already downloaded, and still hold a charge. What they can no longer do is buy or download anything new, effectively ending their useful life as e-readers for many owners. Amazon’s shutdown means these e-readers can’t even borrow books from users’ local public #libraries.

"For the planet, this lack of support results in a death by a thousand server support cuts. This e-waste adds up. At the very least we need lifetime transparency for tech—we should know how long manufacturers guarantee the tech we buy will work before we buy it."

  4. New push for #RightToRepair in #Maine aims to cut costs, reduce #ElectronicWaste

    Vivien Leigh, August 13, 2026

"Advocates, lawmakers, and business owners have started a renewed push to help #Mainers fix #phones, #laptops, and other small #electronics more easily.

"Supporters set up a mock electronic-waste graveyard on Thursday to underscore the need for 'Right to Repair' reforms.

"Sheldon Arford owns Maine Computer Services, an independent repair shop. He showed nearly six computers that still work but are on their way to the recycling bin.

" 'They can't take the current version of Windows, and #Windows10 no longer gets security updates,' Arford explained. [Um, Sheldon, have you heard of #Linux ?]

"The business owner joined advocates and lawmakers for a mock memorial service focused on electronics that stopped working after their software expired, such as Windows 10 computers, #vacuums, #VideoGames, and over a dozen #Kindle models."

  5. #Mainers throw sobbing eulogy for #DeadTech in #RightToRepair battle

    Fri, August 14, 2026

#AugustaME (WGME) -- "Local #activists held a literal funeral outside the Maine State Capitol on Thursday, mourning over mock gravestones dedicated to #smartphones, blenders and #SmartRefrigerators.

"They claim manufacturers are discarding technology early and retiring models that still work so customers will buy new ones.

"The activists are fighting for the legal 'right to repair' their gadgets instead of being forced into expensive, corporate-mandated upgrades when devices stop working.

" 'I'd like to offer these remembrances for many #AmazonKindles. Their screens lit up our work and will always be remembered. On May 20, Amazon cut off 13 models of Kindles — every model made before 2012,' Environment Maine Field Director Lily McGovern said. 'I have one of those very models. The company said they had to do this because the technology has come a long way. Meanwhile, I thought reading text on a screen was pretty much the same it had been. Silly me.'

"Maine already has a right-to-repair law for cars, but a bill addressing smartphones fell short by just two votes last spring."

  6. Not just 'Grandma Hobbies' - #DIY and #woodworking ( #GrandpaHobbies ?) are making a comeback as well!

The Comforting Resurgence of ‘ #GrandmaHobbies

In search of calm and community, new generations are learning centuries-old skills.

By Kate Brennan, July 18, 2026

Excerpt: " 'Younger generations’ appetite for hands-on activities — what the internet has dubbed 'grandma hobbies' — has reached far beyond Michigan. In North Carolina, John C. Campbell Folk School, the oldest folk school in the country, has a long waiting list for its teen program; just a few years ago, it was struggling to fill all the spots. Ely Folk School in Minnesota has also reported a post-pandemic influx of younger volunteers.

" 'Grandma hobbies reconnect us to ourselves,' said Cal Newport, a professor of computer science at Georgetown University who writes about technology, focus and productivity. 'These activities are hard, in that they require time and concentration to master. But they also offer clear and fulfilling rewards.'

"Mari Sanborn, the communications coordinator for the Folk School Alliance, a nonprofit that supports #FolkEducation across the United States and Canada, said learning #handicrafts offers a way to reclaim a sense of community as well as #TraditionalSkills.

" 'It’s a way of holding onto things that might one day be lost,' she said."

  7. I have an old surface studio laptop that I absolutely love, but one of the fans started sounding like a chainsaw.

No problem, I'll open it up and lubricate the fan or replace it.

However there are 8000 glued on strips of plastic or foil that I'm definitely not getting back on. 🤞 hopefully it's all cosmetic.

    P.S.
White lithium grease on the fan bearing. Reassembled and silent with good flow. Foil and rubber feet trashed 😞

  9. I was delighted to repair my portable recorder: a cheap plug had broken off at the XLR input. I had to take the whole thing apart. It was a very stressful moment when I tore off the copper-coated insulating tape and desoldered the XLR plug, but I managed to sort it out.

  11. Just repaired my new Dewalt 15ga nail gun.

Depth wouldn't adjust, the knob was frozen hard. Even some external pressure didn't budge it.

Searching on reddit turned up a comment that explained how the mechanism worked. (I'll copypasta in comments).

After watching videos on folks removing the covers to do other fixes, I did same, but pulled off the adjustment rod.

Got the adjustment nut back on threads and now it adjusts and works!

  12. The Art of La Chicanada

When people jokingly talk about la chicanada, they're referring to that uniquely Mexican ability to solve a problem with whatever happens to be within arm's reach. Wire. Zip ties. Duct tape. Fishing line.. An old hose clamp. A soda bottle. A rusty bolt that somehow "looks about right." It's resourcefulness born out of necessity...and occasionally out of stubbornness. Every self-proclaimed handyman along the U.S.-Mexico border has practiced the art at least once. Some are casual students. […]

The City of Boston Environment Department is partnering with the Connolly Branch of the Boston Public Library to host one of these events.

    WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

    - A broken gadget, small appliance, computer, toy, textile good, or other item
    - A description of what’s wrong and anything you’ve tried to fix it
    - Useful tools and parts, if you have them
    - A desire to explore and learn!

  14. The #FTCSettlement With #JohnDeere Is a Huge Win for the #RightToRepair Movement

After more than a decade of pushback, farmers and repair advocates have won access to equipment and services John Deere had long kept under its control.

    Boone Ashworth, Jul 8, 2026

"On Wednesday, the US Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement with tractor manufacturer John Deere over a 2025 lawsuit that accused the company of behavior that 'unlawfully acquired and maintained #monopoly power in markets for repair services for Deere #FarmEquipment.'

"The full statement lays out obligations for John Deere’s repair services, requiring the company to give farmers and third-party repair shops access to the same equipment and repair resources it provides to official John Deere dealers. This includes software capabilities, such as reading and resetting codes and pairing with other software, which customers have long had limited access to, creating delays when diagnosing equipment problems. Delayed fixes can mean delayed harvests, which many farmers saw as a fundamental threat to their livelihoods.

Under the agreement, John Deere will be required to provide this level of access, equipment, and services for the next 10 years, monitored by the FTC.

" 'After years of fighting for the right to repair, this order gives farmers real hope,' #WillieCade, a board member of the repair advocacy organization Repair.org, wrote in an email to WIRED. 'But promises on paper must become tools in farmers’ hands, and we will be watching implementation every step of the way.' "

"Join us for #RepairCafeSantaBarbara, a completely free, community-powered event where volunteers help fix broken items instead of sending them to the landfill. 17. I'm a big fan of Wendell Berry, a Kentucky poet, writer, and farmer in his 90s. He has a character in his novels, Danny Branch, whose family is pretty much self-sufficient. Here's a list of unspoken rules the family lives by:

1 – Be happy with what you’ve got. Don’t be always looking for something better.

    2 – Don’t buy anything you don’t need.

3 – Don’t buy what you ought to save. Don’t buy what you ought to make.

4 – Unless you absolutely have got to do it, don’t buy anything new.

5 – If somebody tries to sell you something to “save labor,” look out. If you can work, then work.

6 – If other people want to buy a lot of new stuff and fill up the country with junk, use the junk.

7 – Some good things are cheap, even free. Use them first.

8 – Keep watch for what nobody wants. Sort through the leavings.

9 – You might know, or find out, what it is to need help. So help people.

Edit: To me, all this is part of what Solar Punk means except that it doesn't incorporate the use of computers. I feel like Solar Punk is into fixing things, not buying new things, making things but that it knows how to use technology in a way that is consistent with sustainability and being human.
