#SecretSantaAoNZ is this thing on?
Donkey is my nickname (after the annoying talking animal in #Shrek). Kāihe is #TeReo for donkey, or ass.
Things not listed in my bio/pinned posts, I’m a fan of:
• #Firefly
• #DoctorWho
• #Pixar Movies (the earlier ones, really)
• #Capybara (my spirit animal)
• #StarTrek (#StarWars is fun, but - if I had to choose just one - it’d be Trek. All of them except Enterprise)
• #Jacinda’s politics of empathyUmmmm … not sure what else to say - it’s been a while since I last did #SecretSantaAoNZ back in the old days when the bad place was the good place.

Matapēhi day one:
Learnt(ing) new words for "valiant warrior," "revolt," "fight with losses on both sides," "attendant," "long wooden trumpet," and "fog," and a couple others.
The kupu, respectively: mumu, whana, haupārua, hāwini, pūkāea, kohu. This is shaping up to be a great book.

I've recently been watching Te Kauwaka (Avatar the Last Airbender in te reo Māori).
Comprehension: 8/10. I understand most of it, but there are a few times where I don't know a word or two, or a sentence's grammar structure is a bit new for me.
Focus: 7/10. Sometimes my mind can drift, but I'm generally quite focused while watching it.
Effort: 4/10. This series is relatively easy, but I do have to use some effort to understand it all.All in all it's enjoyable and a great resource for learning the language.

With this latest wind warning in Canterbury I have been thinking that we need a really good name for these nor'westers. After all there is the Santa Ana in California and the Sirocco in Europe.
My Te Reo is almost non existent but I have come up with:
Te manawa o taniwha
The breath of the taniwha.
I like it. What say you?

Another two months, another 50 hours, another learning te reo blog post!
I'm still amazed that I can watch tv or read the news in a different language, understand most of it, and learn from it. Combine that with vocab and grammar study and it's going well!

Te Reo ~
We have two alternative universes happening in Aotearoa.A Gvt with a racist agenda trying to strip out te reo in every way imaginable
Community/social orgs, local Councils, many companies & large numbers of NZers continuing to integrate and use te reo in their daily lives in a multitude of ways.
The "stop te reo" crowd are on a bus to nowhere. #tereo #NZPol

Steve Braunias speaks with NZ authors of children's books about Erica Stanford’s decision to remove te reo words from the Education Ministry’s "Ready to Read Phonics Plus" series.
The general response is one of disgust. Here's author Stacy Gregg.
“What I find astonishing is the sass of Erica Stanford’s racism – I mean she’s just so blatant with it. I guess that’s what growing up on the North Shore does to you.”
The Luxon coalition's unwritten mission to erase te reo culture from NZ continues quietly, one racist chip at a time.

Near the end of June, I reached the milestone of 150 hours learning te reo Māori. My current goals are to do consistent practice, build up comprehension in reading and listening, and steadily increase my vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.

There are so many different kupu mō staring, with very slightly different definitions. If it ends in 'tē' there is a high chance it might be one of these kupu.

@jeremy_pm I was pleased to be offered the choice of an oath, or an affirmation. When we sang the national anthem - in #TeReo first (as it is always done) - I knew I was doing the right thing.

So according @te_reo_bot , "tamāhine" means "daughter."
... I like how it looks/sounds like "tama hime"--which would be "jewel princess" in Japanese. Nice resonances. #languages #TeReo #Japanese

🏴☠️ Taika Waititi (part 1)
If you're out in AoNZ or Australia, you can now watch 6 Disney films re-versioned into Te Reo Māori! While this isn't directly related to Taika, he did write the first draft of the Moana screenplay - and he's spreading the love of Reo Māori!

I've written a new blog post summarising my te reo learning progress in the past month, and shared my small goals for the next month.
> "The main problem I’ve had this month was consistency in doing listening and reading immersion. Even though I find them enjoyable, other things take up my free time and I didn’t spend as much time as I want to."

@tekupu Mākona meaning satisfied in Māori reminds me of the old Mmm Moccona coffee ads.
Perhaps I'm not the first to make that connection as I see there's a Mākona coffee cart in New Plymouth, which is both encouraging customers to order in te reo Māori and helping young people into mahi. Nice.

Huge congratulations to #TeHiku Chief, and advocate for #TeReo #DataSovereignty, Peter-Lucas Jones, on being recognised as part of the @thetimes #AI100. Huge congratulations!

I'm humbled and awed to be in the company of so many accomplished artists, researchers, practitioners, guardians, technologists and designers as part of the Fantastic Futures Conference #FF24 Key Speakers lineup - presented by #NFSA on behalf of the #AI4LAM community.
Peter-Lucas Jones, and the work of #TeHiku Media in preserving and protecting Indigenous speech data of #TeReo is an effort I have long admired. Associate Professor Kirsten Thorpe's work at the Jumbunna Institute at University of Technology Sydney also centres on data sovereignty for Indigenous data, from an archival perspective.
Eryk Salvaggio - @CyberneticForests - also an alum of the #ANU School of #Cybernetics, like myself does incredible work in interrogating social and cultural impacts of #AI, especially in #ComputerVision.
Kartini Ludwig's use of creativity at Kopi Su Studio to empower artists runs counter to the prevailing norm of scraping the internet to build #LLMs and #diffusion models.
And Associate Professor Sydney Shep's trans-disciplinary work in book history and print culture, as well as her practice as a letterpress printer and bookbinder, is a fascinating exploration of how our cultural histories shape our futures.
Together, we hope to convene conversations that help shape the future of #AI and #ML within the #GLAM sector.
Huge thank you to Keir Winesmith and @ingridbmason for the opportunity, and to Ashlinn H. who I know is doing incredible work behind the scenes.

Another Invercargill city councillor reveals anti-Māori beliefs. This time it's first time councillor Barry Stewart complaining after someone mentioned "Te Unua Museum of Southland". Er... It's only the actual name of the museum. Doh!
Stewart is part of mayor (and Julian Batchelor fan) Nobby Clark's clique and he only scraped in by 26 votes.

Every greeting. Every time - if we can manage it! We won’t be perfect - and that’s okay. But the more we can do it, the more we can try and normalise it. #TeReo is here to stay - this coalition isn’t!And we could all go with #MeriKirihimete too?
