"A cistern is an underground tank that captures and stores rainwater that you can use for irrigation, emergencies, or daily water needs. Cisterns are especially helpful in areas with unreliable or expensive municipal water systems. We’ll explore the different types of cisterns, describe the benefits each offers, and explain how cisterns differ from wells in the guide below.

    Definition of a Cistern

A cistern is a watertight tank that collects and stores water for later use and is typically made of reinforced concrete, cinder block, precast concrete, fiberglass, and steel. Your home’s gutters and downspouts usually funnel rainwater into your cistern, and you can use that water as a supplemental supply, an emergency supply, or for irrigation. Cisterns can also hold groundwater, household greywater, spring water, well water, or treated city water.

Professionals can install cisterns above ground, underground, or into building structures. Burying cisterns underground might be the best option, though, as underground cisterns keep water cool during warm months and prevent it from freezing during colder weather.

Cisterns intended for domestic use typically hold at least 5,000 gallons, but sizes and setups vary according to homeowners’ needs."

  6. Pleasantly surprised to see #HistoricIpswich getting into the #ICEOut action! #Solidarity!

#IpswichMA “Ice Out for Good” Rally: Saturday, January 10
    12pm-1pm

"Ipswich citizens and neighbors will gather together for the 47th consecutive Rally for Democracy on the Middle Green at noon on Saturday, January 10, joining a broad coalition of groups across the country calling for a coordinated ICE Out For Good Weekend to demand accountability, honor lives lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions. A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. The event is sponsored locally by the Ipswich Democratic Committee."

#CraneOutdoors: Dunes by the Light of the #FullMoon

    Castle Hill on the #CraneEstate

    Sunday, September 7, 2025, and Monday, September 8, 2025

About CraneOutdoors: Dunes by the Light of the Full Moon

"Transformed and illuminated by the glow of the full moon, the beach and dunes of Castle Neck are a stunningly beautiful landscape. To experience this special place at this magical time, join us for a unique hiking experience.

"We’ll start with the beauty of a sunset while taking an evening walk along Crane Beach when most visitors have packed up and gone home for the day. We’ll have ample time to take in the 'Cape Ann light' that has been the inspiration of many artists over the years. Then, we’ll then head into the dunes where we’ll explore the trails of Castle Neck under the light of the full moon. You’ll enjoy the quiet of Pitch Pine groves and catch glimpses of the Atlantic as you crest the dunes. You might even see some cranberries in the Neck’s naturally occurring cranberry bogs.

"Please note: Our standard Full Moon Hike is suited to kids aged 12+ and/or who can comfortably hike 2-3 miles. For families with smaller children, or those looking for a slower pace, please look for our CraneExplorer: Family Full Moon Hike offerings, which are shorter and go at a gentler pace.

"Bring water and dress for the weather to maximize comfort. You are welcome to bring a flashlight or headlamp, but we may ask for moments of total darkness to fully enjoy the moon and the shadows it makes on the dunes."

But seriously, this video has some great footage of the old Rose Garden (and Ritual Circle) when it was crumbling. I got to hang out there before the *renovation*.

  31. #WIPWednesday is all about our #IpswichLace event this coming Saturday!

    Event details: nelg.us/Weaving-threads-of-lac

The museum will let me sell my Ipswich lace jewelry (necklaces and pins) so I'm doing the final details. I am also bringing Karen Thompson's books for her if you wanted to see them before buying. They are hard to find in person.

#GatherFiberSymposium has had so many great events this month that I absolutely could not keep up with them.

    #IpswichMA #BobbinLace #Lace

  32. I decided that I needed a #beachcomber day today. Away from the internet, just the noise of the waves crashing. Trudging through the sand. Nearly alone. It was great. Found an actual comb on the beach.

Also, I needed a crustacean claw for Alençon lace, but I think I got the wrong one. Oh well, another beachcomber day....

Alençon lace uses a lobster claw to press the lace at the end. I don't know if these crab ones will work.

  33. I was walking in #IpswichMA a while back, and this lovely spring window box was so charming on an otherwise gloomy gray day.

  34. This giant insect sculpture both compels me and haunts me, every time I visit the #IpswichMA Museum.

  35. I knew it was going to be pretty hot yesterday, so I took a half day & went up to Ipswich MA, to Crane Beach. At this time of year, whenever it’s warm enough, it’s fun trying to catch that last great beach day.

Here’s a video w sound of place where the beach kind of comes to a point & the waves change directions & cross each other, about where Plum Island Sound shifts into the Gulf of Maine

  36. Finally, this little one was not having a good day. I did the flip over, but it didn't seem too excited about that either. Alas. I don't know how it turned out.

  37. Me, on the way to the #EV charger: why does my car smell like low tide?

Also me: oh, right, yesterday's #beachcombing on the back seat.

I learned some interesting things from this haul. 1/n

  38. #WIPWednesday. I decided that I needed to make some #IpswichLace in actual #IpswichMA. And I really needed a beach day. It was wonderful--a perfect summer day. Stunning

Had to briefly stop when this small ladybug decided to check out my #BobbinLace pillow.

  39. I forgot to do a #WIPWednesday for a while. Got busy, but also because it's the same damn work, only longer.... Lace is a #SlowHobby.

This is an #IpswichLace replica pattern. These were found in #AlexanderHamilton's papers and patterns recreated from original samples of ~1790 #American #BobbinLace from #Massachusetts.
