Happy to boost - it's definitely an area worth studying.

Have you published anything (formal or not) about "Repair Cafes" and other popular movements to reduce e-waste / re-use "obsolete" electronics?

Yeah, ebay turning into yet more "doom" has kinda happened for me as well. Current inflation & tariffs has turned me from my long time hobby of "flash foss OS onto random cheap device no one expect one on" into "guess I really don't need that thing anyway." Whether this is saving us from more rampant consumerism, or just ending with more stuff being dumped into landfills as e-waste, all depends on your perspective.

  4. We all have that box / drawer / cupboard of junk we never get rid of. Time to get this #ewaste to the #recycling centre. Must admit, it was quite fun looking through the phones at old text messages and names, some from 24 years ago! #Remeniscence #Memories Surprisingly the #Nokia and one of the #LG phones powered up without the need for a charge first. They don't make 'em like they used to!

  17. So, just finished this month's Repair Cafe in #Regina.

There's a depressing pattern where small #appliances, typically #kitchen stuff, fail after just a year or so. The warranties are invariably one year. Nobody, especially the manufacturer, offers service - "Just buy a new one, it's cheaper" is the refrain. Of course, we're trying to "reduce, re-use, recycle" and keep this stuff out of the #landfill.

Even trying to service them is a pain, and sometimes impossible. The cases/shells of modern stuff are frequently absolute b*stards to take apart, and really new stuff now features "one-way clips" - there's literally no way to unclip the shell after it's been clicked together at the factory. You can't access the latching bit, so you have to force it and break the #clip, and then #bodge it back together somehow.

Mandating a longer #warranty, like in the EU - two years, three? - would help, because stuff would have to be designed better.

The two most frustrating from today:

    1) A Keurig coffee maker, used twice, a year old. Got it apart, it had leaked water onto the back of the (massively #overcomplicated) CPU board, and shorted it out. Poof, magic smoke gone, tears in the rain, time to die, etc. Who puts the CPU directly under a join in the #water pipe?

    2) A gas-powered leaf blower. Fuel line rotted, but to be able to feed new one through from the carburetor to the fuel tank, you have to take the shell apart - which requires disassembling the engine!

  24. How to Recycle Old Electric Appliances and Devices: Creative Tips

    by Kim, September 2, 2024

"The junk drawer in the kitchen. The forgotten cupboard in the garage. Or even that cluttered space under the bed. Most of us have some nook or cranny stuffed with old electric appliances and devices. The average UK household is believed to contain at least 20 unused gadgets. We’ve all got them—outdated phones, a blender that no longer blends, or a laptop that’s long since passed its prime. But what should we do with these unwanted electronic items? Simply chucking them into the bin is not the answer. Let’s explore creative and responsible ways to recycle and repurpose old electronics."

  25. "In a detailed report released last week, titled The Urgent Case Against #DataCenters, #FWW pointed to some of the 'documented harms caused by #AI and data centers,' including:

    - Enormous #energy footprints: A single hyperscale data center can consume as much energy as 2 million US households.
    - A lifeline for #FossilFuels: The thirst for fuel is being met by keeping old #coal-fired power plants running and by building new natural gas ones. [And restarting old #NuclearPlants]
    - Skyrocketing electricity costs: Increased #EnergyDemand can raise residential rates, which soared 31% from 2020 to 2025 (compared to 4% from 2015 to 2020).
    - Drained water resources: By 2028, AI data centers could use as much water as 18.5 million households, just for cooling their servers.
    - An investment bubble: A handful of companies are investing in one another and increasingly turning to risky debt structures to hide the threat of the bubble.
    - A litany of other harms: This includes massive amounts of electronic waste (#EWaste), unrelenting noise pollution, loss of #farmland, political instability from #deepfake videos, lost revenue from data center tax incentives, and #ChildEndangerment from #AI #chatbots."

  29. #GoldExtraction from #EWaste gets 10 times more efficient with new sponge material

Researchers developed a nanoscale cross-dimensional composite material via self-assembly of two-dimensional graphene oxide and one-dimensional chitosan macromolecules.

By Prabhat Ranjan Mishra, Oct 27, 2024

"Researchers have developed a new type of material that’s 10 times more efficient at extracting gold from e-waste than previous adsorbents. Developed by chemists and materials scientists at the National University of Singapore, the material is a type of sponge made of #GrapheneOxide and #chitosan [shrimp shells].

"The material can reportedly transform the way gold is extracted from electronic wastes, which has been described so far as a dirty business with low yields and results in toxic #pollutants.

"The cheaper, cleaner and efficient method was tested by researchers using real e-waste provided by a recycling company."

    [...]

"While the present work focused on gold, the team say the technique could be adapted to recover other valuable metals such as #silver, #platinum or #palladium from #ElectronicWaste or even #mining residues. And that is not all: as well as e-waste, the technology might be applied to a wider range of environmental cleaning efforts, such as filtering out #HeavyMetals from #PollutedWater sources or industrial effluents, reported Physics World."

  30. #MIT develops new way to recover critical metals from #EWaste

A multi-step process could produce 1.2 kilograms per day, but its viability depends on expanding #recycling efforts.

    Elizabeth A. Thomson, November 24, 2025

"MIT researchers have developed a new, efficient way to recycle #gallium, #indium, and potentially other critical metals key to modern electronics from e-waste like discarded computer screens. The process could also be applied to waste streams from companies that create products containing these metals.

" 'Once optimized, our process could recover 1.2 kilograms of these metals per day,' says Antoine Allanore, a professor of metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He notes, however, that this can only happen if a great deal of e-waste is recycled, and currently there are no large-scale efforts to that end. The recycling rate for gallium and indium from e-waste is currently close to 0 percent.

"The work is important because gallium and indium are listed as critical metals by the United States and the European Union. That’s because they are only produced as byproducts from the #mining of other metals like zinc and aluminum, and those mining operations, in turn, are dominated by only a few countries, including China.

"For many reasons, it doesn’t make economic sense to open new zinc and aluminum mines solely for these byproducts, says Allanore. 'Can we instead recycle and recover these two critical metals from e-waste?'

"He and colleagues have developed a multi-step process to do just that. These steps range from first physically removing #LED chips and other sources of the metals from the e-waste, to exposing them to high temperatures to liberate chemical components. Many of these steps are familiar to industry."

  36. I was looking to buy a new phone. I was considering the #hmd Pulse Pro...but a phone I can buy on their website at the moment is going to stop getting patches in May 2027... eWaste in ~1 year after I buy it.

On Samsung's webite I can buy a A17 5g that they claim will get security patches until 2031.

Both are budget phones (I don't care about the specs) - but the difference in the patching schedules is shocking.
