The irony of the #AtlasNetwork attack on Te Tiriti through #TPU the #Act Party and other astroturf organisations exposed in Nicky Hager’s book #DirtyWork is that it has forced NZers to become more aware of the historical injustices and failures of the #NZPol colonial government to honour the treaty and recognise the Māori sovereignty that was established in 1825 when He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni was recognised by King William IV and the French government who, at the time, also had plans on colonising Aotearoa NZ.

Here's a really basic history lesson:

#Aotearoa #NewZealand is the only British colony where the #indigenous people, Māori, declared sovereignty over the land.

He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, is the 1835 Declaration of Independence of New Zealand. This is a foundational document by which northern Māori chiefs asserted their collective sovereign authority and independence as a nation.

James Busby assisted in having this Declaration immediately sent to the colonial office in Britain where it was finally received by King William IV who recognised #Māori authority by registering the first flag of Nu Tireni - Te Kara. By July 1839, another 18 rangatira (chiefs) from around Aotearoa had put their mark to the parchment.

When the founding document of NZ #TeTiritioWaitangi was signed by most not all Māori rangatira (Chiefs) 1840 it was an agreement between 2 sovereigns - Māori and the British Crown for co-existence in partnership.

Māori never ceded their sovereignty but remained powerless against the colonial govt that never honored the founding document.

Today, the Treaty of Waitangi still protects #Aotearoa #NewZealand from foreign exploitation of much of NZ's resources which is why these hard right #NZPol agents of groups such as #AtlasNetwork are determined to dismantle the treaty for foreign exploitation.

Do we know who is going to be responsible for writing the NZ citizenship test?

I believe it should be a non partisan group organised and agreed to by representatives of the original parties that agreed to the #Aotearoa #NewZealand founding document #TeTiritiOWaitangi and that would be the NZ Governor General who represents the #British Crown and a #Māori representative group made up of members from the #Waitangi Tribunal, Urban Māori Authority and Iwi Runanga (Tribal Councils).

There should also be public consultation and input into citizenship test before making any final decision. #NZPol

If you want good reasons for the left to keep fighting FTAs - as we have since the 1990s - just ask Te Pāti Māori;

Maybe kiwis need to accept that the NZ government is just fucked, give up on it, and work with whānau, hapū and iwi to reconstitute the country's governance arrangements from scratch? Stop buying into the badly cloned version of the British government that claims total sovereignty here.

My reading of Te Tiriti in the context of He Whakaputanga is that it formally recognises Ngāti Pākeha as an iwi. Maybe we need to start acting like one?

Prominent #Māori health leader Lady Tureiti Moxon has filed a human rights complaint to the #UN over "systemic discrimination" of Māori in #NewZealand.

In her submission, Moxon alleges a "significant and persistent pattern of political racial discrimination against iwi Māori" and that since late 2023* a series of government actions have reversed progress towards fulfilling New Zealand's obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

I was recently talking with a NZ business man I know (of my age) about advice on the possibility of doing business with someone they also knew.

I was absolutely astounded when he casually said yeah he might be worth approaching, unfortunately he is very Jewish.

Out of nowhere I said Wow, I haven't heard that particular smear since I was in primary school.

Which now, looking back, seems why it is so important to include #TeTiritiOWaitangi history and te reo as part of NZ school's education and celebrate the multiples of ethnicity's, cultures, faiths and languages. Children learning and understanding about the people in their communities and everyday lives is critical for a united country. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the vehicle that brought us all together and te tiriti should be our guiding light moving forward.

This Te Ao with Moana piece is a very powerful, sad and beautiful story about the small RSA club in Te Teko, Mātaamua, deciding to break away from the national #RSA (Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association founded in 1916 by returning #ANZAC 's) because they refuse to recognise #TeTiritiOWaitangi in the RSA constitution.

Was quite emotional to watch remembering my pākehā uncle telling me, as a kid when I stayed on his farm, that he felt shame and guilt about being given the land for his farm on land confiscated from his best mate's iwi while his best mate got nothing after they returned from fighting together in WW2.
