You don't need to be an experienced sewist to start modifying your own clothes. We'll prove it in June.

And that's it! Your pants are now ready to face the world again. The trickiest bit is to make sure not to catch extra bits of fabric and create creases (or even sew shut your pants), but if you do, there's always the trusted seamripper to cut the stitches and try again. Just take your time and it'll be fine.

The hemming tape may claim that it's a durable solution, but that's a lie. We need to reinforce this patch or it'll just drop off in no time. Using your sewing machine (or needle and thread if you're patient and have strong fingers), sew up and down the patch several times. Remember to use matching thread to your pants. This is where the reverse button of your machine will really come in handy. Up and down, left and right, just make a nice grid, catching all the edges.

#sewing #mending #MakeDoAndMend -
Put the pants on a flat surface, and put first the hemming tape and the the patch on the inside on the hole. The right side of the patch facing down, towards the hole. Try to keep the edges of the hole together so less of the patch will show through. If your hole is too big, don't worry, that's why you have a patch in a matching colour. (Or not, you can use a contrasting patch for a bit of #VisibleMending.) If there's a lot of fraying, maybe trim down the edges a bit first. When everything is lined out, take a hot iron and iron the patch on. Mind you don't melt any interfacing to your iron, or you'll have to clean of nasty gunk (ask me how I know).

What we need for an easy fix is a patch in the same colour as the pants and a bit of hemming tape. I didn't have black canvas, so I took a bit of dark denim from a pair of jeans that were beyond repair. Hemming tape is basically double sided fusible interfacing. It's meant for - you'll never guess - hemming, but it's great to keep patches in place while you sew them on. You could skip the tape and use pins, but that's much more fiddly, especially in a difficult location like a crotch seam.

Let me share an easy way to fix a hole in your pants . Here's the crotch of one of my guys jeans. I don't know what he does (not sure if I want to know), but pretty much all his pants develop holes along the crotch seam. This one is still small and easy to fix.

Hive mind - what would you cover degrading plastic suede on a pair of shoes with?
The soles are still perfect, as is the fit/construction/inside, but they look absolutely dreadful.
Ideally, repair material comes from my stash - real leather bits (an old moth eaten jacket), some umbrella fabric, blue denim, black canvas, various linens and a wide variety of cottons. These wouldn’t be for wet days, so probably don’t need to be waterproof or overly washable. I do have some funky quilting cottons (including pirate skulls 🏴☠️ ) and some silk obi and kimono remnants.
(‘Scuse the cat hair - the broken suede and the velcro is a magnet)

I’m on the way to fix/alter everything that doesn’t fit me right. lol
This old Uniqlo pocketable windbreaker lost elasticity of the cuff binding long time ago, and the too-long sleeves have been annoying me to no end. Fixed! 😁✌️

After several years of contemplating, I’ve finally altered my Patagonia jacket’s sleeves (which were too long and annoying) to fit me perfectly. The hardest part was undoing and removing the binding tape cloth from the sleeves. Now I will love wearing this well-loved jacket even more!

The Hemorrh Age
We live now
in the Hemorrh Age,not the age of honest wounds
tended by trembling hands,
not the age of scars
that speak of healing,
but the age of the open vein,
the praised rupture,
the sanctified split.Everything is torn
and taught to remain torn. The old ligaments of neighborliness,
frayed.
The sinews of patience,
snapped.
The small capillaries of mercy
burst one by one
beneath the pressure
of opinion, spectacle, grievance, noise. We are leaking.
Trust runs into the street.
Language pools beneath the door.
Truth is carried away
on a thousand little red channels
no one bothers to close. And everywhere
the merchants of division
move among us
with clean white gloves,
smiling,
holding their polished instruments,
whispering that this incision
is necessary,
that this cut is clarity,
that this tearing apart
is what it means
to be awake. They call hemorrhage conviction.
They call hatred discernment.
They call contempt wisdom.
They call cruelty a kind
of courage.And we, half-dizzy,
half-devout,
watching our common life
soak through the bandages,
mistake the spreading stain
for a flag.Even the holy things
are not spared.Altars become platforms.
Prayer becomes signal.
Prophets are drafted
into factions.
The wounds of the world
are trimmed and displayed
for effect.
Compassion is made to perform
beneath bright lights
until it no longer knows
how to touch a body
without first finding a camera. How strange,
that a people can perish
not by a single blow
but by endless bleeding.
Not by invasion
but by laceration from within.
Not by silence
but by the shriek
of everyone opening
everyone else.We have become
students of severing.
Apprentices of fracture.
Curators of the unsutured.Every difference
a knife.
Every slight
a blade returned.
Every memory
reopened.
Every sorrow
milked for more.No one asks now
how to heal a wound.
Only how to name it,
frame it,
share it,
weaponize it,
keep it wet.And still—
still somewhere beneath
this failing body,
beneath the fevered rhetoric,
beneath the hot blush
of tribal wrath,
some quiet stubborn tissue
tries to knit.A hand reaches.
A voice lowers.
A stranger refuses
the sweet narcotic
of contempt.
Someone binds what they did not tear.
Someone stays near
what others abandoned.
Someone chooses
not victory,
but mending.Perhaps that is how
an age survives itself. Not by denying blood.
Not by pretending
there was never injury.
But by kneeling at last
beside the opened body
and saying:Enough.
Let the wound close.
Let the pressure ease.
Let mercy return
to the smallest vessels.
Let the torn muscle remember
its first design.
Let us become again
something more than our bleeding. For if this is
the Hemorrh Age,
then let there also rise
against it
the tender and stubborn saints
of suturing,the keepers of bandages,

‘Don’t throw away your old #clothes – do this 1 thing instead’
#RepairCafes are popping up in the UK where volunteers are learning how to #repair, #mend and #fix #garments or #electronics to avoid buying new items
By Steph Spyro, Deputy Political Editor
16:00, Sat, Nov 15, 2025"A stitch in time may just save the planet as Britons’ nimble fingers do their bit to prevent 1.4billion garments from going to landfill. Nearly one in three adults (32%) have thrown away new clothes in the last years amid the rise of fast fashion.
"But retired nurse Debbie Kennedy, 60, is among the people who have joined a #RepairCafe where clothes are #mended. She described how attending the #GreenerAndCleanerHub’s #knitting and #crochet group in #Bromley, London, has also helped 'repair those bits of me that have been broken along the way'. Ms Kennedy said: 'As I was approaching retirement after 40 years of nursing, I wanted to ensure that I continued to feel productive and give something back to the community and maintain my health and wellbeing.' "

Sewing can be oddly soothing
I spent about an hour this morning trying to avoid jabbing myself with a sharp metal object. The experience was more satisfying than I would have expected–not just because it left me without injury, but because it left me with a inexpertly patched pair of jeans.
I’ve been sewing buttons back in place since I was in high school, that being one of many things my mom taught me to do. It’s not hard, it doesn’t take that long, and even if you need to make this repair away from home, you’ve got decent odds of a hotel room including a mending kit with all the materials needed.
It took me a little while longer to get in the habit of picking up a needle and thread to sew together a tear in a shirt or a pair of pants. That’s not too difficult either, plus you get the satisfaction of restoring an item of clothing to service without having to pay somebody to do it.
Then I devoted part of a Saturday in July to level up my mending game at a free clothing-repair tutorial in Arlington hosted by Art on the Mend (yes, that is me in the picture on the home page), a program founded by cartographer Alison Davis-Holland.
With a small room’s worth of people, I got some hands-on coaching in picking the right kind of fabric to patch an item of clothing, a few different stitching techniques to employ for the work, and how to proceed with it. The “why” of this lesson was just as important: not only because it’s cost-effective to repair something, but because that act of DIY mending personalizes that object.
And it allows you the chance to put some creativity into the required stitching, as Davis-Holland showed with some of her own fine work.
I left the class with a pair of jeans in which a developing rip in the wallet pocket had been sewn up–with a lot of help from the attendee seated next to me–as well as a set of fabric patches to use in other fabric-repair attempts.
Saturday morning was one of them, involving another pair of jeans that needed patching. (I don’t remember Levi’s wearing that badly in my younger days, but maybe I just keep them longer now.) Sewing a patch on fabric that’s begun to fray is more work than re-attaching a button to an intact shirt, especially if you’re not that practiced at this task, and so I had to take my time with it.
But I also found this exercise so oddly soothing that I didn’t mind the minutes going by. Slip the needle and thread through, send it back, through and back, through and back… and the risk of poking yourself with the pointy end forces a level of concentration that my screen time rarely allows.
See also: why I’m so crazy about gardening and cooking, two other hobbies that help me less like a digital man and more like the analog kid I once was.

I #sew the ends of my hoodie sleeves. I don't know whether to see another line on the ends.
It's not too neat but i don't really care.
My hoodie is super old but I'm not gonna throw it cause it's got personality. The big green patch was done on a machine by my sister after I got myself caught on a part of a truck when I worked in a warehouse.
-
Half way though mending these jeans I got from the thrift/ charity shop I work at.
Was gonna go in the trash since they have paint and a torn belt loop.
I unstitched the belt and patched the hole. Think I might make a new belt loop that is either next to the patch OR a slightly bigger loop which attaches in the original place on the top and then just below the patch.
What do I do about the paint? Do I look up how to paint jeans and just make it all arty?

Worked at the charity/ thrift shop with my mum today. Found a bunch of cool stuff.
I normally go though bags of donations and sort them out put them on the shop floor etc and some clothes come to us pretty stained and ripped.
I want to save things from landfill so I've saved some stained stuff and and working at getting the stains out.
I found a cardigan with a hole in and just mended it in 2 minutes.

Mending can sometimes be thought of as a chore, but I find it really relaxing and enjoyable, especially when I've got a good podcast to listen to.
This time around I'm repairing socks. I don't usually feel like store bought socks are worth it, but I have a couple that I really like, and they've lasted longer than normal, so I thought I'd give it a try and see if it helps.
