A mending book I’m planning to buy for myself when I can is Modern Mending, by Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald.

It’s got all the usual techniques in it, but it’s also got a bunch I haven’t seen elsewhere or have only seen online (like Scotch darning). Here’s two things I’ve learned from it:
- methods of repairing zippers, where possible. It doesn’t explain how to replace them, but that’s a fish of a different color.
- preparing patches using a version of English paper piecing. This is a quilt-piecing method that really helps with tidying up the folded edges.

It also has a thorough guide to what tools and materials are needed for repairing different kinds of fabric!

If you have repair skills and love a challenge, join our team of volunteer #menders and #mentors.

- The mission of Repair Café is for experienced menders to share their knowledge while demonstrating repairs, so our clients leave feeling empowered to try repairing themselves. We aim to spread the word that repairing and renovating can be FUN!
- Given the increased interest in Repair Café, appointments are limited to helping the client within the allotted 1/2 hour appointment time. Repairs and/or mending that require more time will need to be finished by the client.

Please check the volunteer skills we can offer at this Repair Cafe and choose the one that matches the item you need to repair most closely. Each volunteer will show you how to repair your item, using their tools. You will learn the skills to finish repairing your object at home if we run out of time.

It would help us if you can indicate the type of repair you are bringing in, so we can be more prepared. For example, 'torn seam in red dress' then we can have red thread available. 'Old, faded jeans needing a patch' so we can have the right color patch handy.

Please remember:

- One person per repair.
- Each time slot is 30 minutes long, starting at 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Up to two repair slots can be made per person.
- We will do our best to repair your item but sometimes it may not be fixable.
- Any spare parts (batteries, etc) will need to be provided by you. You can buy spare parts at Fells Hardware on Main Street.

Browsed the library for embroidery and hand sewing books. Here’s a couple I want to buy for myself:

- *Make, Sew, and Mend*, by Bernadette Banner (of youtube fame). Several hand sewing techniques I wasn’t familiar with already, and has good advice on a number of sewing topics. (Some I agree with already, which suggests the things I’m not already familiar with are worth trying.)

- *The Geometry of Hand-Sewing*, by Natalie Chanin. starts with basic stitches and then builds embroidery stitches from them in what looks like a natural progression. It’s got some plastic template cards for practicing the stitches (or marking the stitches on fabric). (Don’t be scared by the word “geometry”; it’s nothing like a math textbook.)

Seeking mending advice.

Mr Kitteh put a small rip in one of my flat bed sheets - small enough to cover w a penny. I was debating how to best mend it. Some sources online were like use a fabric patch on both sides and machine stitch which is fine if you want a giant stiff seam. I was just going to sorta pinch it and mend it kinda darning style with a fine hand held needle.

Any thoughts from those who have threaded a needle?

Do you find it annoying when socks don't even last a single decade before getting holes in them? I used to sew them back together, but I recently realized that I don't need to. Socks tend to get thinner as they age and develop holes in different places. By wearing two socks on a single foot, the holes in each one are covered by the other and the overall thickness is correct.

My partner has listened to me boast about this discovery one too many times, so I thought I should share it with Mastodon instead.

@gannet That is so cool! Do you have two needles threaded at once and do a circle at a time with each of them to keep the two colors lined up?

I started learning embroidery to help me mend clothes, but so far I haven't attempted anything bold on shirts and dresses. There's a part of me that's still scared to "ruin further" something that's already torn. I've mainly darned socks and patched jeans, which I find less intimidating.

A while ago, I ripped a hole in the bottom of this skirt. I put in a lumpy patch in non-matching fabric, not caring at the time because I mostly only wear this at home.

Last week, I decided I wanted to embroider over the visible parts of the patch, and used some 30yo iron-on embroidery transfers, which I promptly decided I disliked.

I’m embroidering abstract shapes over the patch and the transferred flowers. This is going to be two lines of chain stitch coiled together, like the one I’ve already embroidered elsewhere on the same skirt.

Experimenting with mending pinholes in a skirt by covering them with arrowhead tacks (see below for correction), which are usually used to decoratively reinforce the ends of seams.

I haven’t ever used them before, but I think this is a good way to practice!

My kid's doll's shoe ripped and she asked me to fix it.

I can stitch it back together pretty easily but it will be an extremely visible and ugly stitch. Does anyone have thoughts on how to fix it but make it look good?
