The Philosophy behind Mend
#Mend started as a joke about the Arch community, but it turned into my daily driver.
It’s about bridging the gap between a broken terminal and the manual.
Automation that helps you learn rather than just hiding the problem. -
I got tired of the "RTFM" responses every time a simple environment break happened on Arch.
So I built #Mend. It’s a Zsh-native tool that catches common terminal errors
(PGP keys, locked DBs, missing .so libs) and many more. Fixes them in seconds. No LLM, just pure logic. #ArchLinux #Zsh #Linux #SelfHosted -
The Mad Frank's Dreams: Post 9 Of Garrotes and Battle Plans
#FanFic #TheApothecaryDiaries
#Wss366 Hinge #MastoPrompt MendMao eyed the garrote in Chue’s hand, then the cell, and finally Chue herself. Mao waited for her companion to explain.
“I’ll strangle the one with a cudgel while you throw the blanket over the other. Hold on to him and don’t let go. Everything #hinges on whether you can keep him busy until I've dealt with the first one. Can you do it?”
Instead of answering, Mao nodded and asked, “How long until they come back, and what if there are more than two?”
“Who knows how the bones will fall, but the moon hasn't turned its face from us yet.”
Mao clicked her tongue at the courtly language but said no more.
With the plan settled, the two waited. Mao held the blanket in her lap while Chue pretended to entertain her with the flags or to #mend the pennants. Each of them listened and watched the door, waiting.
The hours crawled by, and the light that crept through the boarded window dimmed. Mao had slumped, and her face had turned a sick green. Another one of Chue’s candies helped, but Mao’s hands still shook, and her eyes were dull. When Chue felt her forehead, it was hot, and her hair was damp with sweat.
“You should sleep,” Chue said.
Mao shook her head. “If they come, I need to be ready.”
“As you will, but only until there is no light. Then, go to sleep. I'll wake you if I hear anything.”
Mao nodded again. As much as she hated to admit it, sleep was the only reliable remedy for a head injury like hers. She would just have to hope there was no internal bleeding.

I once found a list of ideas or steps to further your own #solarpunk journey, but I can't find it any more. Maybe it no longer exists, but maybe I just don't know where to look. The internet doesn't forget. Are there any solarpunk enthusiasts here? Do you know what I'm talking about?
The list contained things like
1. Always carry a Sharpie to deface nazi propaganda
2. Join a #union
3. Learn how to #mend your own clothingI don't recall what the others were. It might have been on #Reddit, but I couldn't find it in any of the solarpunk subs I found.

‘Don’t throw away your old #clothes – do this 1 thing instead’
#RepairCafes are popping up in the UK where volunteers are learning how to #repair, #mend and #fix #garments or #electronics to avoid buying new items
By Steph Spyro, Deputy Political Editor
16:00, Sat, Nov 15, 2025"A stitch in time may just save the planet as Britons’ nimble fingers do their bit to prevent 1.4billion garments from going to landfill. Nearly one in three adults (32%) have thrown away new clothes in the last years amid the rise of fast fashion.
"But retired nurse Debbie Kennedy, 60, is among the people who have joined a #RepairCafe where clothes are #mended. She described how attending the #GreenerAndCleanerHub’s #knitting and #crochet group in #Bromley, London, has also helped 'repair those bits of me that have been broken along the way'. Ms Kennedy said: 'As I was approaching retirement after 40 years of nursing, I wanted to ensure that I continued to feel productive and give something back to the community and maintain my health and wellbeing.' "

My first blog post on the #Mend blog is naturally all about #Renovate: Building a more secure npm ecosystem with Mend Renovate
This has been something we've been building up to for ~2 months of hard work making it as predictable as possible, highly documented and builds on top of ~6 years of Renovate having this functionality

Sewing can be oddly soothing
I spent about an hour this morning trying to avoid jabbing myself with a sharp metal object. The experience was more satisfying than I would have expected–not just because it left me without injury, but because it left me with a inexpertly patched pair of jeans.
I’ve been sewing buttons back in place since I was in high school, that being one of many things my mom taught me to do. It’s not hard, it doesn’t take that long, and even if you need to make this repair away from home, you’ve got decent odds of a hotel room including a mending kit with all the materials needed.
It took me a little while longer to get in the habit of picking up a needle and thread to sew together a tear in a shirt or a pair of pants. That’s not too difficult either, plus you get the satisfaction of restoring an item of clothing to service without having to pay somebody to do it.
Then I devoted part of a Saturday in July to level up my mending game at a free clothing-repair tutorial in Arlington hosted by Art on the Mend (yes, that is me in the picture on the home page), a program founded by cartographer Alison Davis-Holland.
With a small room’s worth of people, I got some hands-on coaching in picking the right kind of fabric to patch an item of clothing, a few different stitching techniques to employ for the work, and how to proceed with it. The “why” of this lesson was just as important: not only because it’s cost-effective to repair something, but because that act of DIY mending personalizes that object.
And it allows you the chance to put some creativity into the required stitching, as Davis-Holland showed with some of her own fine work.
I left the class with a pair of jeans in which a developing rip in the wallet pocket had been sewn up–with a lot of help from the attendee seated next to me–as well as a set of fabric patches to use in other fabric-repair attempts.
Saturday morning was one of them, involving another pair of jeans that needed patching. (I don’t remember Levi’s wearing that badly in my younger days, but maybe I just keep them longer now.) Sewing a patch on fabric that’s begun to fray is more work than re-attaching a button to an intact shirt, especially if you’re not that practiced at this task, and so I had to take my time with it.
But I also found this exercise so oddly soothing that I didn’t mind the minutes going by. Slip the needle and thread through, send it back, through and back, through and back… and the risk of poking yourself with the pointy end forces a level of concentration that my screen time rarely allows.
See also: why I’m so crazy about gardening and cooking, two other hobbies that help me less like a digital man and more like the analog kid I once was.

I #sew the ends of my hoodie sleeves. I don't know whether to see another line on the ends.
It's not too neat but i don't really care.
My hoodie is super old but I'm not gonna throw it cause it's got personality. The big green patch was done on a machine by my sister after I got myself caught on a part of a truck when I worked in a warehouse.
-
Half way though mending these jeans I got from the thrift/ charity shop I work at.
Was gonna go in the trash since they have paint and a torn belt loop.
I unstitched the belt and patched the hole. Think I might make a new belt loop that is either next to the patch OR a slightly bigger loop which attaches in the original place on the top and then just below the patch.
What do I do about the paint? Do I look up how to paint jeans and just make it all arty?
-
Worked at the charity/ thrift shop with my mum today. Found a bunch of cool stuff.
I normally go though bags of donations and sort them out put them on the shop floor etc and some clothes come to us pretty stained and ripped.
I want to save things from landfill so I've saved some stained stuff and and working at getting the stains out.
I found a cardigan with a hole in and just mended it in 2 minutes.

#RepairCafés breathe new life into broken household items, teach people to fix on their own
November 20, 2024
"Twice a month in #EvanstonIllinois, volunteers sit face-to-face with people troubleshooting and diagnosing the symptoms of a beloved but broken household gadget.
"Much like a hospital for all things broken, they're trying to find a way to mend and breath new life into the item.
"The Evanston Repair Café is held every fourth Tuesday and every first Saturday at the Robert Crown Center.
"'The most popular item is our lamps, people always have broken lamps,' said Anne Opila, a co-coordinator of the cafe. 'In the summer, we'll have a lot of fans, we get toasters, we get clocks, we get vacuum cleaners.'
"There are more than 3,000 similar Repair Cafés around the world, with a mission to reduce waste, promote community, and preserve traditional repair skills.
"'Patrons come in and they work together to repair their item. It prevents us from throwing things away that fills up our landfills so that we can continue to use them, and they go on to live a happy life,' said Opila.
"Known as a volunteer #RepairCoach, John Martin is a retired maintenance mechanic working in the general repair section of the café.
"'People are not aware that they can fix things, they figure, the philosophy in this country is buy, buy, buy, if it's not working get rid of it,' explained Martin.
"But with a little help from a handy neighbor or a retired and skilled volunteer almost anything can be fixed.
"'What we're doing here is trying to encourage people to fix stuff themselves and give them the skills and knowledge to be able to not only do it themselves and maybe pass it on to somebody,' said Martin.
"'I have this Smeg toaster, and I dropped it,' explained customer Coco Colin. 'It's such a nice piece I don't just want to throw it away.'
"Beyond general repair, they also have #sewing coaches to help #mend or #hem clothing.
"'On Saturdays, which is our busier day we also have #JewelryRepair, #KnifeSharpening, plant advice, paper conservation, musical instrument advice. So we really bring in all the skills that people are willing to volunteer for and then people can take advantage, they're all free and all available,' said Opila.
'"It's like a mission because there's so many things need to be done for the environment this some little thing i can do,' said Martine."
