This painting was inspired by the fireworks shows put on here locally between Thanksgiving and Christmas. They provide a bit of joy during the darkest part of the year, so it felt appropriate to begin with around New Year.

New Year's Wish

With a new year coming soon, I wish for my nation (and all other nations) a year:

• without shootings or other violence in the schools, the places of religion, the streets, the homes, or anywhere else, really;

• with honest and competent politicians loyal to their people and principles more than their parties;

• with news media devoted to keeping their people informed of the truths that affect their lives, not only those that inflame their tempers or prurient curiosities;

• with citizens whose idea of citizenship is not to rise up and destroy their fellow citizens, but to protect them all.

May it be so.

I know I'm late to the party but I've got a resolution for the new year. I've noticed that I have a really hard time accepting offers of help. I think I tend to take them as implied criticism. Someone is offering to help because they don't think I'm good enough to do it myself. It's not great. In the spirit of keeping things small and actionable my resolution is that any time someone offers help or advice, the very first thing I'm going to do is say thank you. #resolutions #newyear2024
