  3. Powered up - Apple announced their fancy new folding iPhones today, so of course I had to run right over to the Apple Store… and get the battery in my perfectly good four-year-old phone replaced. No way am I dropping thousands on a new phone when the one I’ve got is still fine! #frugal And happily, while I […]

  5. Torn. Just bought an absurd amount of soy sauce flavored cheapass ramen on sale and I'm tempted to go back in and pick up a bit more even though I already have at least 6 months worth.

Not even going to use the flavor packets, just going to have my $0.10 ramen with either the 2 gallons (~7.6 liters) of Costco pork tonkatsu ramen broth in my pantry or with homemade broth starting from rotisserie chicken stock (plus veggies, meat, maybe an egg sometimes).

  6. @agentpalisade so many initiatives, fewer 'fields' - keywords I'd include in 'tech beyond capitalism': #commons, #cosmolocalism, tech worker #coops, platform coops, computing within limits #Limits2026, #TechOtherwise, #convivial tech, #relationality, #DesignJustice, #crip #technoscience, #MutualAid, #sufficiency, #frugal computing, #degrowth, #postgrowth, #fediverse, #solarpunk, #permacomputing, de/anti-colonial work, and other things we love at justsustainabilitydesign.org/ :) What did I miss?

  7. The heel of the loaf and the two hard slices nobody wanted. Tear them with your hands — never a knife, the ragged edges are the entire point. Dry skillet, medium, a glug of oil, a smashed clove, salt. Six minutes, shaking.

They go the color of a paper bag and the kitchen smells like a bakery.

  8. Forty percent protein by dry weight. That's among the highest of any plant food there is, and it costs less than a cup of coffee.

Lupini fed Mediterranean and Andean households for thousands of years before an American grocery store decided they were a novelty in a jar by the olives.

  10. They come back. Every time, visibly. Wilting is water leaving the cells, not decay, and the plant will drink it straight back up through the cut.
The American household throws out roughly a third of what it buys, and a meaningful slice of that was never spoiled. Only thirsty.
Cost: nothing. Time: unattended. Go look in your crisper drawer.

  14. Here's the part worth knowing: the milk wants to do this. You aren't manufacturing anything. You're letting an acid finish a job that was already half done.

And the light in a kitchen where somebody just made cheese out of heat and a lemon is a particular light. It doesn't require anyone's permission or anyone's brand.

  15. Off the heat, half a cup of lemon juice or plain white vinegar, stir once, then leave it completely alone for ten minutes while it breaks into white curd and thin green whey. Through a cheesecloth-lined colander, salt it, press it under a plate and a heavy can for twenty.

The whey goes into tomorrow's rice or the cornbread, not the drain.

  16. Four dollars. About a pound of fresh cheese. Half an hour, most of it waiting.

One gallon of whole milk warmed slow to just under a simmer — 190°, or until it foams at the rim and stops sitting still.
