@ExtinctionR Try to learn some #VisibleMending ! It's simple, it's fun, and you become the designer of your individual style (nothing disheveled)!
You can nearly endlessly use such #mendings and when the piece falls apart, cut it in scraps for becoming a patch for something else ... or bind several pieces to make an #artjournal!
#SlowFashion and #repair mustn't be ugly. It's creative and connects people eg by patch swaps. -

@Stratski Thank you for the great thread! For fans of #visibleMending - you can use special needles for jeans and thick fabrics, that's better for the fingers. Sashiko patterns are great for hand stitching in such a place, of course, then on the outer side.

Put the pants on a flat surface, and put first the hemming tape and the the patch on the inside on the hole. The right side of the patch facing down, towards the hole. Try to keep the edges of the hole together so less of the patch will show through. If your hole is too big, don't worry, that's why you have a patch in a matching colour. (Or not, you can use a contrasting patch for a bit of #VisibleMending.) If there's a lot of fraying, maybe trim down the edges a bit first. When everything is lined out, take a hot iron and iron the patch on. Mind you don't melt any interfacing to your iron, or you'll have to clean of nasty gunk (ask me how I know).

Een buurvrouw kwam bij ons langs met deze fietshandschoenen, die ze naar eigen zeggen 30 jaar lang met veel plezier had gedragen en dat nu graag nog 30 jaar zou doen. Ik kan haken en @Dehuisgenoot kan naaien, dus in een co-productie hebben we de gehavende delen vervangen door nieuw haakwerk en dat net zoals de oude delen aan het leer vastgenaaid.

Westbrook, ME 04092, USA"Let's channel the rebellious 60's and 70's by making a protest patch using groovy fabric scraps. Learn two different machine applique techniques. We'll use reverse applique to create a layer fabric image. Text will be added using double sided interfacing and friction pens. The patch makes a perfect pocket or patch for a mended pair of jeans. We'll have interfacing, pens and a heaping basket of fabric scraps but feel free to contribute your own scraps. This is a great scrap busting project and the more scraps the merrier.
Prerequisites: Some machine sewing experience is helpful, such as Sewing Machine Basics with Jo.
Class date: Sunday, May 31st, 10:30am - 12:30pm
Location: 506 Main Street Unit 18 Westbrook Maine. Free parking available on-site. Accessible entrance and restrooms.
Cost: $45 per person. Scholarships are available; apply here.

@writerethink There’s a subreddit for visible mending that has beautiful (although sometimes intimidating) examples. I’ve been planning to visibly mend a moth hole in a vintage Pendleton ‘49er jacket for several years, but it’s a little scary—esp. when I see artist-level embroidery on various platforms under the #visiblemending tag. :-)

Spent the evening watching The Lost Boys (1987)(first watch for both of us, that was a TRIP) and patching up a tear on spouse’s pants. First time using a speedweve, there’s some things I learned (should have marked out the square before I started and should have made sure the two colored threads were the same weight) but overall reasonably successful.

I try to take care of and invisibly and visibly mend my clothing so it would last in use as long as possible. This practice took a whole new step as I tonight started experimenting with how I could mend some regular cotton socks.
I have a pile of old, more or less worn down socks that have been waiting for me to try to figure out how they could be fixed. This first experiment is reinforcing a spot which does not yet have a hole with some sewing thread.
This is very time consuming but also kinda satisfying. But already now I'm learning that it would definitely be worth it to do it when there is just a smaller area in need of reinforcement.

Mending can sometimes be thought of as a chore, but I find it really relaxing and enjoyable, especially when I've got a good podcast to listen to.
This time around I'm repairing socks. I don't usually feel like store bought socks are worth it, but I have a couple that I really like, and they've lasted longer than normal, so I thought I'd give it a try and see if it helps.
