  2. The ageing process leaves marks and character on our favourite things, and makes them worth fixing.

It has been a long time since I knew where to find an old-fashioned cobbler with the right tools for stitching thru thick leather, so when the strap of my handbag broke free, I re-attached the D Ring using an old scrap of leather (saved from when I worked in a factory at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution), a very sharp paring knife, and a bolt and two nuts left over from an old piece of broken furniture that someone took away.

The repair is now about 10 years old.

  4. More #VisibleMending

I’ve had 1/2 a dozen pair of socks on rotation for ?5 years…
got them from Aldi, they are a merino blend with elastaine tops, and just the best socks ever. As a bonus, they are very mendable.

The most remarkable thing is that of the 12 socks in total, only one has shown any wear near the front of the foot. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am beginning to find darning a relaxing way to pass the time. I’m finally turning into my mother.

this cardigan was hand-knitted (pure wool) by an Aunt of mine —I first saw her wearing it about 25 years ago.

Fren has inherited it, but managed to put a right proper very ragged tear in the left sleeve (undoubtedly while gardening)

Fren did a good job of guessing the colour (without even a sample) while in a woolshop.

I tried to knit a patch to place over the hole, but after several hopeless attempts (yeah… nah) abandoned the knitting option and I just ended up darning it.

Mission Accomplished — no landfill, plenty of wear left in the cardie, and memories of Aunt on tap !

  7. A little bit of #VisibleMending this evening. I was supposed to be patching up tears along the inside waist of my hiking pants, but this sandal needed emergency repairs more.

  11. @gannet That is so cool! Do you have two needles threaded at once and do a circle at a time with each of them to keep the two colors lined up?

I started learning embroidery to help me mend clothes, but so far I haven't attempted anything bold on shirts and dresses. There's a part of me that's still scared to "ruin further" something that's already torn. I've mainly darned socks and patched jeans, which I find less intimidating.
