About a week left until Open Hardware Summit!
If you come by my table I will have this interactive sound sculpture setup to play with.
Each black fossil (the knobs) control the volume of a different resonant frequency of the sculpture’s 3D printed material (PVB).
This is part of a larger series of artworks which can be viewed at https://new-travel.cookiebrunel.com#osh2026 #berlin #physicsart #soundart #3dprinting #electronics

Anyone into #electronics and/or #plumbing?
In my home, I found some fun stuff from the previous owner. One thing was an "Aquaquant" branded thing looking like a simple steel rod that was connected to a water pipe with freaking cable ties. As if that could ever do anything.
A more interesting thing I found was two spools of insulated standard mains wire wrapped around the main pipe then taped. Each spool was connected to the box on one end, and closed (insulated) at the other end.
So all it can do is create an electrical field. There definitely can't be any real current - the entire thing is basically a coil, then a "capacitor" to the water pipe, then the water pipe itself being a basically zero ohms resistor, then another "capacitor" formed of insulation, then the second coil. If you ask me, just estimating, with frequencies below the GHz range nothing interesting whatsoever can happen there, as both capacitances and inductances of those must be tiny.
So, well, what was in the box? Two boards:
- One PCB with a transformer, four diodes; so let's all say it together:
FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER
and a rather large capacitor. That capacitor is rated for 35V, so let's take that as upper bound for the output voltage. Also, the thing powered a LED behind a resistor for power indication.
- A second board, a stripboard (not PCB!) with some of the traces cut out and of course some blank jumper wires. This board contains a few capacitors and small resistors at the power side (probably interference suppression), then more resistor and capacitor stuff around an 8-pin IC socket. The IC turns out to be a 555.
Now, I didn't plug it into mains, but I tried out the second board with my lab bench power supply in reasonable voltage ranges, and basically whatever I set it to, I get around 700 Hz square wave close to input voltage at the output.
So now I ask:
- What was that thing even good for? 700 Hz low voltage isn't gonna do anything to the water inside the pipe, which actually is a Faraday cage anyway. And all it does is a really weak electrical field anyway (I mean, at most 35V over 10cm distance - I get a stronger electrical field around a button cell) that turns on and off at 700 Hz - there should be basically no magnetic component as at such low frequency the current should be lower than anything I can even measure. AFAIK there's nothing an electrical field that weak at such low frequency can even do to water - even less so behind a freaking metal pipe acting as shield.
- Why not simply have nothing in that box except for the LED? It's not like the 700 Hz circuit even did anything. Only for people like me who open this? But then all those already know it's BS...
- What did the previous owners pay for that esoteric nonsense? I can't find any manufacturer name or label on it. Sure wasn't cheap... -

I could check the datasheet...but fairly confident ~230F is not an ideal operating temperature for this chip.

Reparing the Fabula. The speaker and battery cables were broken at the soldering point. No idea why. Also, it isn't the first time it happens. They are common Dupont cables cut and soldered (because I need the connector on the other end). They shouldn't be subject to mechanic stress, it seems more like a chimical/oxidation problem... but I have no clue at all...

I was able to graft the wires from an old xbox controller to another xbox controller with that USB-C powered soldering iron I have. The power source was the xtar pb2sl v2 and I put the 2 girthy vapcell f60's in there.
I can't believe that worked out well. I thought it wouldn't melt the soldering wire but nah. I used a 0.6mm 63/37 soldering wire which was cool.
I still haven't forgotten my training after 4 years haha.

#Electronics fedi, what make and model are these tactile switches? They don't match anything I'm seeing when searching for "slim round smd tactile" and the like - everything has too big a base and often the wrong colour. Is it possible they've just rolled their own mechanism to make it super tiny? They snap satisfyingly in and out but take a surprising amount of force.
These are in a weirdo gamepad I want to write about this week.
EDIT: solved, they're not off-the-shelf tactiles at all! Read ⬇️

Temporarily hooked up one of the extra giant solar panels to a small battery. Wonder how many kw would be required to run my beer brewing fridge. Got a massive bargain on solar panels ($30 for each 250W new panel) but had to buy two more for the deal... working on a weatherproof battery box to power whatever... #electronics #solar

This week end I'll be at #hackadayeurope . What should I pack? My laptop, of course, and then? Multimeter, breadboards, a couple of MCU? Should I bring the soldering iron? Any project to show?
I'm traveling by motorcycle, so I can bring more than on a plane, but not a lot...

If you are in the #Regina #SK area, there is a Repair Cafe happening this coming Saturday (16 May), located in the George Bothwell library in the Southland Mall.
This one is a bit special: it's part of a larger event that's happening, the Climate Expo. There are a bunch of other things going on as part of it, but one is that Bike Regina will also be there, fixing and tuning up bicycles.
I'll be there, fixing electronics, small appliances, and random other things, but I'm just a volunteer, not an organizer or official spokesperson. There will be the usual array of other fixers repairing sewing, knitting, game consoles and controllers, jewellery, and other things.
There's also going to be a teardown table for the kids to have fun with ripping stuff apart to see what makes it tick.
So come give your stuff a second lease on life. Keep it out of the landfill, and as a bonus, stick it to the manufacturer that made it just good enough so that it died right after the warranty expired 😜 .
Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also book a spot in advance here:

I recently learned about wire wrap connections. They're fast, easy, strong, and make good contact. Developed by Bell Labs for early phone switching, by they 50's it was a standard in electronics, and was later used by Apple and IBM in their early computer prototypes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_wrap
This seems totally ideal for #diy #electronics projects and prototypes. Plus, no soldering iron required!

Something that would be really cool is a big, circular, high-contrast LCD/OLED display, and then writing custom clock faces for it! :3
Is someone's #aliexpress game good enough to source one? Largest I've been able to find is 7 inch: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005009248594276.html Was thinking something like 30 cm diameter?

Idk I guess I'm more of a bear than a human. I can't have friends and I can't have someone "feed" me attention, else I become insane. Bears are solitary after all
I'm like 60/40, 63/37 kind of deal. Kinda like a soldering wire haha. I have to learn how to solder though. It's been a while..

Does anyone have datasheets for the Philips SAA5120 and SAA5150 teletext ICs?
I came across a computer using them (Micral P2) but I can't find them in Philips databooks.

Day 2 of the stupidly repaired XTAR PBSL2 V2 and so far no problems. I'm charging a keypad phone with a micro usb port on it right now. Yes, those phones where you have to press buttons to get to a letter
I vaguely remember a shortcut of pressing the "OK" and the "*" button to lock those kinds of phones. Also you can use keypad 2, 4, 6, and 8 when moving around the snake in the Snake game lol

🔋⚖️ Storing #energy in a #battery increases the total energy of the system, which according to #physics, results in a proportional increase in mass.
For a standard #smartphone, this added weight is roughly equivalent to one-quadrillionth of a gram. The change is the result of energy being stored in the chemical bonds of the lithium-ion cells during the charging process.

I obviously suck at soldering! My left thumb cluster just stopped working, which led to a new "opportunity" to learn - identifying what was wrong.
I never really bothered to look into how the circuits worked when building it the first time since I was busy learning to type on the split keyboard.
Tried out #deepseek v4 flash to help identify root causes and guiding me on how to debug it as part of testing how good this very cheap model is.
The guidance was solid, but I've soon ruled out most things without the error. At least I've learnt some (and removed the useless rotary knob that I tried out)...

Yeah I don't have a serious solar setup. I don't have money anymore. That said, it didn't stop me from buying a glue gun and a USB powered soldering iron ! I still have to test it though.
I've forgotten how to solder properly but I'll remember it. After all it was part of some training I had back then.
So far I've been "speech checking" my parents to give me cash, "choosing the right dialog" Fallout-esque style..
