Revisiting a project from 12+ years ago: a series of mods to this Saitek flight yoke.
The impetus was an overly aggressive center return & detent, fixed by yanking the springs. I had rubber bands in their place, but those disintegrated - gotta find more but it’s usable without.
Unfortunately the center detent was hard coded as a dead band in the firmware, so an Arduino with Unojoy was used to read the pots. It also gives a bunch of switch contacts, so I figured I’d add toggle switches. This was all a part of the original hack.
After dusting it off, I found the axes were super noisy. What I had originally suspected as dirty pots turned out to be bad analog inputs on the arduino(!!). That really threw me for a loop. My original wiring was… creative, so I got this proto shield and a DuPont connector kit, so it’s a little neater now.
I still need to connect the original board when I use it, as that’s what the external throttle and all the buttons on the yoke connect to.

Holy crap, I haven’t played this in over 12 years!! Yeah!!!
I’m remembering this machine. I did have a simplified reinstall on one of the spinning drives, which is what this is. The SSD had an install a bunch of airplane and scenery add-ons, but that’s toast (too bad; I’m sure all the downloads were on there too). I also had Prepar3D installed, but it wanted to reauthorize.
Because I never get rid of anything, I still had had the yoke, throttle, and autopilot. I’ve also got rudder pedals, not yet connected.
And of course I didn’t have a 30” Apple display back in the days; was lucky if I had a 22” 1080p. That the 30” display is dwarfed by the tower tells you just how ginormous this case is.
The impetus for getting a 15 year old sim platform up and running will be the subject of a future post :)

I've learned that the #Blind #FlightSim community is not the place for new pilots. If your new and want to learn how to fly aircraft and your blind, what I've been told is, this isn't a game, go to flight school if you want to learn how to fly the 737 or any other aircraft, rediculous.

Gibraltar LXGB → Lisbon LPPT
5,800 feet of runway length in Gibraltar is pretty tight, but at least the aircraft got its wheels off the ground by the end of the runway. A calculated stop margin of 300 feet meant that, at least on paper, everything was fine ;-)
BTW, I really like the colors of the TAP logo.

Since I am reading Chuck Yeager's autobiography, I thought it'd be fn to take his "Glamorous Glen III" P-51D up for a spin around Eugene in my #XPlane #flightsim.
Not an easy plane to fly. Since I do not have a prop control on my joystick, the sim controls the prop automagically, and if you chop the throttle, it sinks like the Space Shuttle. Having to hold some power in on final, over the fence at 120, touchdown about 90. Wants to ground loop easily.
Fly it to the chocks, I reckon. #avgeeks

Just flew a quick trip from Omaha (KOMA) into Iowa's Knoxville Municipal Airport (KOXV) in my #Xplane #flightsim #Cirrus SF50 Vision jet.
Brought four virtual sprint car drivers in for the upcoming Knoxville 360 and 410 #Nationals at the legendary #Knoxville Raceway.
This will be the center of my world from 8/6 to 8/15 when the very best sprint car drivers in the world descend on this otherwise sleepy Midwestern town for big money on the big half-mile.

I decided to try out IL-2 Great Battles with the Flying Circus expansions… and the hours passed by. I got thrown back to my younger years playing Red Baron II on my Packard Bell Win95 PC. I haven’t been so immersed in a game since a long time. Downed 3 planes, but shortly after I got my propeller ripped off due to a close encounter with the third plane. Landed safely though! 10/10
