  9. More drama in the Star Citizen world 🍿 The greater YouTube drama farmers have decided they can generate clicks by offering ill-informed hot-takes on that latest livestream debacle. Sure, it was a shit-show, and raises many questions about the culture at CIG. But given their pace and quality of development and communications lately, we know things can't be great there.

My favourite take is "well, since SC was announced, Rockstar will have built and released GTA6". I'm not a game developer, but I am (or was) a cloud platforms/ops/SRE guy. Star Citizen is trying to be a massively multiplayer FPS/space sim at high levels of detail (painfully so, sometimes). GTA6 is a single player open-world story-driven game. My hot take is this: these are two very different technical spaces (but with overlap). There are lots of games like GTA6, so plenty of skill and knowledge to help build the next iteration. There aren't many games like SC, or that even have the ambitions of SC. The problems they're trying to solve are fairly unusual in the gaming industry (or at least unusual at this scale).

I'm not white-knighting #CIG here - they seem to have a lot of issues. But they are doing something very ambitious and very difficult, and therefore expensive. I don't even want to consider what their monthly AWS bill is like. I'm amazed they've made it this far on only $1B.

If anyone with #GameDev experience wants to chip in, I'd appreciate it - I may be way off the mark here.

  14. Star Citizen’s Latest Livestream Showed Many Bugs, Performance Issues

    image via ca.pcmag.com

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games hosted a livestream of its latest early access version of the game, and it all went horribly wrong, as PC Gamer reports. Despite being played by the people making the game, hosted on private servers with no network latency, the game suffered from performance issues and bugs, preventing the team from finishing the event.

  27. #StarCitizen is being destroyed in the gaming news cycle, even from Moist Critical & others.

Much of that was Elliot, of course it was, but Jared's behavior was also so unexpectedly bad.

And then there's the game bugging so badly on their internal servers.

They also have Squadron 42 to sell, theoretically. I've never believed that was coming this year, granted, but this will absolutely be connected to their live stream. "The same people who" etc

    And I'm just like welp :dumpster_fire_gif: 🍷
