Campbell Folk School, the oldest folk school in the country, has a long waiting list for its teen program; just a few years ago, it was struggling to fill all the spots. Ely Folk School in Minnesota has also reported a post-pandemic influx of younger volunteers.
" 'Grandma hobbies reconnect us to ourselves,' said Cal Newport, a professor of computer science at Georgetown University who writes about technology, focus and productivity. 'These activities are hard, in that they require time and concentration to master. But they also offer clear and fulfilling rewards.'
"Mari Sanborn, the communications coordinator for the Folk School Alliance, a nonprofit that supports #FolkEducation across the United States and Canada, said learning #handicrafts offers a way to reclaim a sense of community as well as #TraditionalSkills.

Damn... I didn't think the Janome blue dot bobbin case would make that big a difference for free-motion quilting, but the tension is set perfectly right out of the baggie. I am no stranger to messing with bobbin tension (my Singer HD4432 had it set wrong out of the factory) but it's nice not having to mess with it at all.
And it's nice having a bobbin set for each task without having to remember where the screw should turn to. Upper thread tension is easier to change! #quilting

Guidelines for Small Kennel Quilts:Materials used should be 100% cotton (biodegradable) on the advice of a veterinarian. This includes the fabric, batting, and thread. Do not use fleece for it sheds to much. Do not use flannel for it often has synthetic fibers. Even 100% cotton flannel tends to pill and it is not suitable for Kennel Quilts during a disaster. Terry Cloth is not suitable for Kennel Quilts. Little claws can catch on it. Batting cannot have scrim for scrim is usually made of polyester. This is a safety issue in case the pet chews the Kennel Quilt.
You do not have to prewash the fabric, but wash the Kennel Quilt after it is made. (pets can have allergies just like humans).
Finished size should be 12" x 18". This fits the most commonly used small kennel used at shelters.
When piecing, use a small stitch length (e.g. 14 stitches/inch).
Do not use binding as it can be hazardous to pets if it becomes loose. Layer, sew around the edge using a small stitch length, and turn quilts pillow-cover style. Whipstitch the opening with small, tight stitches.
Use only simple appliques that are secured with tight stitches along the edges. Avoid using fusibles.
Keep the quilting simple and use small tight quilting stitches that won’t catch on pet claws. Do not tie quilts as the ends can get caught in claws or chewed off.
Do not use any metallic threads or other embellishments (e.g. beads, charms, buttons, ribbons, lace, trims, etc.) of any kind. Do not add handles or loops to the quilt.#quilting #wildliferescue #wildfire #wildfires #petfinder #quilts #kennelquilts

Going to take a while to actually get passable with free-motion quilting, but I'm having fun with hit pink thread and using up fabric I don't like so that's definitely a win. I think I like this clear foot best so far-- it has nice markings so I stop crowding my lines so much. That helped my swirls a LOT. #quilting #fmq
