Not just 'Grandma Hobbies' - #DIY and #woodworking ( #GrandpaHobbies ?) are making a comeback as well!
The Comforting Resurgence of ‘ #GrandmaHobbies ’
In search of calm and community, new generations are learning centuries-old skills.
By Kate Brennan, July 18, 2026
Excerpt: " 'Younger generations’ appetite for hands-on activities — what the internet has dubbed 'grandma hobbies' — has reached far beyond Michigan. In North Carolina, John C. Campbell Folk School, the oldest folk school in the country, has a long waiting list for its teen program; just a few years ago, it was struggling to fill all the spots. Ely Folk School in Minnesota has also reported a post-pandemic influx of younger volunteers.
" 'Grandma hobbies reconnect us to ourselves,' said Cal Newport, a professor of computer science at Georgetown University who writes about technology, focus and productivity. 'These activities are hard, in that they require time and concentration to master. But they also offer clear and fulfilling rewards.'
"Mari Sanborn, the communications coordinator for the Folk School Alliance, a nonprofit that supports #FolkEducation across the United States and Canada, said learning #handicrafts offers a way to reclaim a sense of community as well as #TraditionalSkills.
" 'It’s a way of holding onto things that might one day be lost,' she said."

Nutritious Foods #Uganda
"Nutritious Foods Uganda is dedicated to empowering urban youth through the power of sustainable agriculture. By turning limited city spaces into productive, life-giving gardens, we teach the next generation how to grow their own fresh, nutrient-dense crops. We are tackling malnutrition head-on, fostering food security, and cultivating young leaders driven to build a healthier, greener future right where they live.
"Proudly continuing a legacy of nourishment and community strength, Nutritious Foods Uganda is redefining farming for the modern world. We are passionate about empowering city youth through urban agriculture—proving that you don't need acres of land to make a difference.
"Through practical training in sustainable vertical gardening, container planting, and space-efficient farming, we teach the next generation how to grow their own healthy food. Together, we are fighting malnutrition, creating green spaces, and building a resilient, well-nourished future for our communities.
What is your dream for the future of your farm and/or location in general?
To teach the youth how to grow crops in a small piece of land."

Empower #Ugandan Families with #GreenYouthMovement
"Imagine a family that struggles to afford enough nutritious food for their children. Through the Green Youth Movement, they gain access to practical training, seedlings, and a local demonstration farm that teaches them how to grow diverse, healthy food on their own land. What begins as a garden leads to better nutrition, lower food costs, new income opportunities, and a healthier future for their children.
Green Youth Movement exists to help families move from food insecurity to self-sufficiency by empowering local youth to restore the land, grow food, and share knowledge throughout their communities.
A $16,000 investment will secure three acres of land in Uganda that will become a demonstration farm, food forest nursery, and community education center. Rather than funding a one-time project, donors will help create a replicable model that trains local volunteers, improves food security, restores soil health, and lays the foundation for long-term community-led growth."

#Virginia - #ClimateChange and Its Effect on #Gardening – 2025
By Elaine Mills, Extension Master Gardener, January 22, 2025
Climate-Conscious Gardening
"To quote David W. Wolfe, Professor of Plant & Soil Ecology at #CornellUniversity,
'We are in the unfortunate situation of being the first generation of gardeners, ever, who cannot rely on historical weather records to tell us what our climate is, or what to expect in the future.'"Join Master Gardeners in the Arlington/Alexandria unit of Virginia #CooperativeExtension in a series of monthly articles updated from their original posting in 2021 as we explore the topic of climate change and practical actions individuals can take in their home landscapes in response. This month, we’ll present an overview."

I just had a wonderful through-the-fence chat with my next-door neighbor, whom I noticed had expanded her chicken set-up. She's not only expanded things, but is now supplying local #FoodPantries with farm-fresh eggs. Wow! She rocks! And yeah. I'll be trading produce for manure gold with her soon! #HotCompost, here we come!

7.6: #Abundance, #Inclusion, #Resilience: The #OneMillionNeighbours Projectby Sam Nabi
Season 7, Ep. 6
Monday, May 19, 2025"This episode, Ariel speaks to Sam Nabi about One Million Neighbours, a project bringing together the voices of local non-profits that envisions the future of Waterloo Region once the population has reached one million. Sam discusses the impetus for the project, providing a voice for the voiceless, the issue with grant applications, funding the future, being proactive instead of reactive to harsh policies, and much more. What might an abundant, inclusive, resilient (Ariel says: solarpunk) city look like on the human level? Who lives there, what do they value, and what are their daily lives like? And what does it look like to take action now at the regional/municipal level to ensure that utopian vision?"

#Massachusetts - #GrowFood #Northampton raises more than $1M for #AtRrisk communities
Namu Sampath, Thu, July 24, 2025
NORTHAMPTON — "#GrowFoodNorthampton is growing.
"The local food and #farming justice group has raised over $1 million for an effort to increase support for vulnerable community members, it said in a statement.
"The money will go toward providing more #FreshFoods to families experiencing hunger, will establish #CommunityGardens at #LowIncome housing sites, will support #LocalFarms and #gardeners, and will go toward implementation of #ClimateResilience measures.
" 'All of these efforts are critical right now due to drastic #FederalCuts to local food and farming programs, the ongoing #ClimateCrisis, and ever-growing #inequities in the local food system and beyond,' the statement said.
"The fundraising effort began late last year. There was an 'outpouring of support,' and the financial goal was met ahead of schedule, the group said.
"The organization will still accept donations through the rest of the summer, and supporters can opt to add their names to a campaign contributors list, which will be installed at the Community Garden in Florence.
"The organization also said it would accept non-monetary support from the community.
" 'Community members are invited to attend summer events, share the campaign with friends and family, and volunteer their time,' the statement said."
