Somewhat ironically, when I was working at Te Taura Whiri in 2009, I pleaded with them (and Dr Keegan) not to release their #Māori language data to Google, as it was the modern equivalent of giving away their taonga for purposes which could be misused or forgotten.

On the night of #Matariki I visited the Karikari Peninsula in Northern #NZ to take some dark sky #astrophotography. Here are two of them, both 3 minute exposures showing the Milky Way. The two #Maori "pou" in one of the photos overlook and protect Maitai Bay and Waikato Bay. They're clearly painted with a kind of glow-in-the-dark paint, which is faintly visible in person but shines brightly in an exposure like this. #NewZealand #Aotearoa #Astronomy #Space #Photography

This time Waerenga-a-Hika (Gisborne) recounting the historic #NZPol attack on the #indigenous #Maori November 1865 at Waerenga-a-Hika pā which served as a refuge for hundreds of Māori, many of whom were women and children adhering to the Pai Mārire faith.
I believe this history being understood is critical in navigating a path forward for all people of #Aotearoa #NewZealand.

Join Wei for this Love Food Hate Waste – Matariki workshop. Bring a few vegetarian soup ingredients such as herbs, garden produce, or simply veges in your fridge that are edible, just looking a bit tired. Together we will make a warm hearty soup to share.
We will be learning about each #whetū (star) and ā rātou tohu o te taiao (their environmental signs); Reflecting on the knowledge of kai we have each learned from our own ancestors. Practical advice about how to be creative with your fresh food and leftovers will be given, to help them last longer. Making the most of the food we have helps save money and is better for the environment. We will play a few games and sing waiata together to consolidate our learning.
This is a hands-on activity. Please bring your chopping board, knife and your taste buds along.

"The city of Hamilton, on New Zealand’s North Island, is cradled by the long #WaikatoRiver. For centuries, the #Tainui tribes of the #Māori cultivated massive gardens here. Even after European contact, they grew crops for themselves and to sell to new settlers. But by the mid-19th century, the gardens were gone.
"At the #HamiltonGardens, one has returned. The complex is something of a garden paradise. Many botanical gardens feature Japanese gardens and kitchen gardens. Hamilton has those. Not too many gardens have a Modernist garden and a steampunk blimp. But Hamilton also has something unique: Te Parapara, a recreated, pre-European Māori garden.
"The Hamilton Gardens got off to a humble start, says director Dr. Peter Sergel. Not long ago, the site of the gardens 'was the rubbish dump for the whole city.' As a child, he remembers the site swarming with seagulls and rats. While it was an interesting romping ground, Sergel grew up and became a landscape architect. Forty years ago, he drew up the plans for a facility that would take visitors through thousands of years of garden history. According to him, a Māori garden was always on the menu.
