Please bring us your unwanted TV remote controls as we can repurpose them and give them a new life.

If you have repair skills and love a challenge, join our team of volunteer #menders and #mentors.

- The mission of Repair Café is for experienced menders to share their knowledge while demonstrating repairs, so our clients leave feeling empowered to try repairing themselves. We aim to spread the word that repairing and renovating can be FUN!
- Given the increased interest in Repair Café, appointments are limited to helping the client within the allotted 1/2 hour appointment time. Repairs and/or mending that require more time will need to be finished by the client.

Please check the volunteer skills we can offer at this Repair Cafe and choose the one that matches the item you need to repair most closely. Each volunteer will show you how to repair your item, using their tools. You will learn the skills to finish repairing your object at home if we run out of time.

It would help us if you can indicate the type of repair you are bringing in, so we can be more prepared. For example, 'torn seam in red dress' then we can have red thread available. 'Old, faded jeans needing a patch' so we can have the right color patch handy.

Please remember:

- One person per repair.
- Each time slot is 30 minutes long, starting at 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Up to two repair slots can be made per person.
- We will do our best to repair your item but sometimes it may not be fixable.
- Any spare parts (batteries, etc) will need to be provided by you. You can buy spare parts at Fells Hardware on Main Street.

Das ist ja nun wirklich sehr bewegend, und wie es scheint durchaus typisch fuer Jürgen Habermas als Mensch und Korrespondenzpartner.

Ich hatte als Student sehr ähnliche Erfahrungen mit weisen Autoritätsfiguren, denen ich meine überschwenglichen Arbeitsentwürfe schickte. Sie erkannten das ernste Anliegen hinter meiner jugendlichen Arroganz und waren willens, mich großzügig zu ermutigen. Dafür bin ich unendlich dankbar, und ich habe mir seither solche Großzügigkeit meinerseits auch zum Vorbild genommen. Es ist sehr schön und es rührt mich persönlich, hier nun von Ihnen ein solches Beispiel von Jürgen Habermas zu sehen, gerade am Tage seines Todes. Danke, dass Sie das hier mit uns teilen!

My former professor and mentor Hans Wilderotter died suddenly and unexpectedly and it is perhaps only now I realize how much he shaped who I am today. I am grateful for having known him and my thoughts are with his wife and those closest to him. My hat is off to one of the kindest and most knowledgeable people I have ever known.

I'm volunteering with Mentor in Tech (MinT) again this year. MinT is a fantastic program where tech professionals (not just devs!) mentor overlooked and underserved students.

If you are in tech and looking for ways to give back, this is a great one. It's a 1 hour/week commitment and MinT provides mentors with really good structure and support. They're always looking for diverse mentors (read: queers, POC, writers, program mangers, etc).

For many years now, I've been a part of the rust mentorship programme:

I possibly get maybe one or two emails a year, asking me for help -- and often is the case that the person I end up speaking to just tends to "disappear"; I'm not sure why. I don't **think** it's me, per se -- although it might be! I don't recall ever being rude.

But just a few weeks ago, I had someone contact me, and so far, he's utterly genuine. He's asking all the right questions, and it's an utter delight to be able to help him. THIS is what I signed up for all those years ago -- to be able to do this for someone else. He's not doing this to solve a homework question, or anything. He's preempting possible changes to the language stack where he works.

Amazing! I'm the lucky one being in this position.

How many other #rust #mentors are out there? It's made me think about the group I'm a part of. We never meet or speak as a group, and I feel we ought to.

If anyone is interested in this sort of stuff, let me know.

Oh, and by the way, I am *NOT* an expert on Rust, so I'm learning all the time --- be it on my own or through mentoring others. But this is the point -- mentoring doesn't imply "guru", but moreoever, it denotes a relatioonship of trust to figure out the right thing, together. :)

I can't stress enough the importance of #DEI in #hamradio and other #STEM, #STEAM, and #STEMM activities. There simply ain't enough old white dudes with cats to keep #amateurradio going. Besides, wouldn't you like to #mentor someone young who is not like you? My first #mentors (#elmers) were a white couple who taught in #Montclair (#NJ) public schools. They gave me my novice test in their apartment. (I'll never forget getting bitten by ants as I took the exam on their couch. 😂 )
