    And plied.

What a difference it makes, when you don't try to spin as finely as possible.

Pre finishing the yarn is not super soft to the touch, but the fiber mix (40% Devon Closewool / 40% Romney / 20% Exmoor Blueface) wasn't suggesting it would be too soft anyway - all of those breeds are in the mid 30ies micron count.

I'll spin the other braid and finish them together.

First bobbin filled. The fiber consists of two layers - one is silk or a silk-merino blend, the other just merino. This is the first layer, spun very finely. I'll spin the second layer onto another bobbin and then ply both together.

  11. CW: First impressions of my EEW Fold electric spinning wheel (CW because long)

I tried out my new EEW Fold electric spinning wheel today, using some random blue wool fiber.

I kickstarted the Fold after borrowing a friend’s EEW Nano. The Nano gave me a sense of what an EEW is like, but I was slightly frustrated by a few things (small bobbins, no way to easily get the same speed every time I started spinning, and it doesn’t really go fast enough to spin cotton).

The Fold fixes all three of those things. It also has a foot switch so I can stop and start it without having to drop what I’m doing.

It’s made so the maidens (the vertical bits that hold up the flyer* and bobbin) can be folded under the base after removing the bobbin. This is great for travel. I’m not likely to use this feature often, but I think I’ll appreciate it if I do.

(I didn’t realize my fiber and bobbin would match the summer bedspread in the background, but it amuses me!)

*flyer: the structure with hooks on that holds the bobbin. It’s the part that adds twist to the yarn and wraps it around the bobbin.

  15. This year I didn’t manage to spin every day of the Tour de Fleece, due to other obligations. But I managed to spin everything in the spinbox from @Spinspul, so now I’ve got 420 grams of Shetland/tussah silk yarn. And besides that also 300 grams of Veluws heideschaap. So all in all it’s been pretty good. #TourDeFleece2026 #HandSpinning #SpinningWheel

I haven't used my larger wheel in quite some time. (#Louet Julia - now this is the Scotch tension version of the S10 concept).

The flywheel is quite, when I just treadly.

The whorl turns quitely when I jusst turn that.

But as soon as I put the drive band on it has a very annoying clacking noise - that is getting louder on the smaller whorls.

It will be interesting to figure out the reason. If anyone has an idea, I'm very open to suggestions.

  25. My spinning wheel hasn't been turning well. After a few YouTube videos, I realized my treadle was tied way too tightly to the postman. I left an inch gap and now it *absolutely flies.*

  30. Today was a day for art yarn. Bought a feathery, sparkly and oh so soft texture batt of "alpaca wool and stuff" in Estes Park many years ago. Spun it some months back but had no idea what to ply it with, until I found a gorgeous bunch of Blue Faced Leicester, dyed yellow with some nature dye I've forgotten (but there should be a note on a paper somewhere). Might as well name it "The Shining". It will be even more sparkly after a soaking.

  31. Summer has started - we sat outside at the spinning group today, which is so nice after many months inside.

The inside location is nice, too. It's a tiny local museum so very fitting for an old craft. But outside is just better.
