In a first-of-its-kind report issued Wednesday, the United Nations has said that Earth has lost its chance to prevent some of the worst of global warming's harms. Now, the world must figure out how to get temperatures below the danger zone and back to safety, officials warn. Earth is soon going to exceed the safe temperature threshold agreed upon by the world in the 2015 Paris climate agreement because of warming from the burning of coal, oil,...

  2. Scientists Could Soon Lose a Key Tool For Studying Antarctica’s Melting Ice Sheets As Climate Risks Grow

James Yungel / NASA file This summer, the U.S. and much of the world have been pummeled by floods, fires and heat waves. Knowing what climate risks come next depends, to a large extent, on what happens in the most desolate place on Earth: Antarctica. But there’s a new obstacle to understanding the changing continent and how it’s affecting weather patterns throughout the world. National Science Foundation plans to decommission its only research icebreaker, the RVIB Nathaniel B. […]

  3. I want a society designed around people.

    Not quarterly profits.
    Not shareholder value.
    Not “disruption.”
Not making some tech bro with a rocket fetish another billion richer.

And certainly not teaching human beings to arrange their lives around whatever algorithm happens to be hungry today.

    Technology is a tool.

A magnificent one! Give me solar panels, open-source software, accessible public transport, robots doing the filthy and dangerous jobs, libraries full of knowledge, green cities, beautiful trains, community gardens, and machines that quietly make everyone's lives easier.

But the question should always be:
“Does this make human life better?”

    Not:
    “Can we monetise it?”
    Not:
    “Can we automate it?”
    Not:
“Can we scale it to infinity?”

    And definitely not:
“Can we make people click on it 47 times before they can see the thing they actually wanted?”
    😌

I don't want a shiny dystopia with better branding.

    I want technology serving people.
    Cities serving communities.
    Economies serving human flourishing.
Humanity living as part of nature rather than treating the planet like a particularly inconvenient warehouse.
Build things that help us live.
Build things that help us care for one another.
Build things that give people more time to be alive.

And if your business model requires everyone to be miserable so that you can become a trillionaire…

    Darling.

Perhaps your business model is the thing that needs disrupting. 💅🌱

  8. 96% Of Oceans Worldwide Had Extreme Heatwaves In 2023

Zhenzhong Zeng In 2023, global marine heatwaves were the biggest, most intense and most persistent on record, a new study reveals. The researchers suggest that these heat waves were driven by climate change and may signal a climate tipping point. Global marine heatwaves (MHWs) are prolonged periods of unexpectedly warm ocean temperatures. These warm periods can critically threaten marine ecosystems………Continue reading….. 9. #NinaMunteanu Talks to CBC About #Solarpunk (in #Toronto and Elsewhere)

    May 3, 2026

    Excerpts:

"On the Emerging Solarpunk Movement in Toronto:

When asked about whether there is a solarpunk movement in Toronto, I said absolutely! #SolarpunkToronto is an emerging movement focused on building a #sustainable, #equitable future through #CommunityAction, #GreenArchitecture, and #RenewableEnergy, specifically tailored for the city’s urban environment. It includes initiatives like sustainable fashion shows, community meetings, and innovative #storytelling, aimed at merging environmental activism with optimistic technology. The mantra is to achieve a regenerative sustainable urban future.

I mentioned #LindsayJane of the Solarpunk Scene (Youtube videos on Solarpunk projects in Toronto) and Ariel of Solarpunk Presents with podcast interviews on solarpunk efforts. People can find community on the Solarpunk Facegroup group. I also talked about the #TorontoSolarpunkMeetup at the #CentreForSocialInnovation, where they practice ' #PrefigurativeLife ’: living as if the #SustainableFuture already exists. Which it does, though not everywhere.

This reminds me of #cyberpunk science fiction author #WilliamGibson’s famous quote: The future is already here; it’s just not evenly distributed.

Examples of solarpunk initiatives practiced by individuals and small communities include the use of #CommunityGardens, setting up and looking after #RooftopGardens or #raingardens. Tenants can have a #PollinatorGarden on their patio and set up a #BalconySolar panel (now very affordable). People are going electric; some are setting up solar rooftops or balconies. Groups and individuals are engaging in clothing swaps and sustainable fashion runways.

Community-led trusts are involved in repairing items for reuse instead of adding to the throw-away culture. In my book #ADiaryInTheAgeOfWater the diarist’s mother Una rides her bike all over the community, repairing all kinds of things for a community that has lost its ability to do so; something we’re losing in this digital age.

    On a Solarpunk Future:

We discussed the feasibility of a city like Toronto becoming 100% solarpunk. My response was a wary yes. Of course it was possible. But, in my opinion, two things have to happen for this to succeed: 1) the willingness of individuals in a community to give up a consumer-led capitalist lifestyle and adopt a lighter gentler footprint; and 2) community and city leaders to be on board with it. The enthusiastic cooperation of leaders cannot be overstressed for a paradigm shift toward a solarpunk future to succeed."

  19. 1,000 Melting Ice Sculptures in Berlin: A Haunting Warning About Climate Change

In Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt square, Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo created a powerful art display to talk about climate change. She placed 1,000 small ice sculptures on the steps of the square, each shaped like a person. As the day got warmer and the sun shone brighter, the sculptures began to melt. This showed how global warming is affecting our planet. The event, organized with WWF Germany, focused on how the Arctic’s ice is melting faster than ever because of rising temperatures. […]
