today i replaced the broken fan on my nintendo switch (original model). it was the most difficult repair that i've done by far, because i had to unplug & plug connectors that i'm not familiar with and because it was my first time applying thermal paste. thankfully, i didn't break anything though, so i'm happy with the end result! #repairing

"Local residents are invited to bring their broken or torn possessions to St. James’ Church on Saturday, April 5 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where 'fixers' will be on hand to make repairs and turn their 'trash' into 'treasure' at the eighth Orillia Repair Café, which takes place twice a year.
"The event is supported by local volunteers and Sustainable Orillia, St. James’ Anglican Church and Lake Country Time Trade.
"Light refreshments will be provided as well as child-friendly activities. A new feature this year will be '#BookSwaps,' one for adults and one for children. The café has a friendly and fun ambience and combines an enjoyable family activity with a rewarding outcome.
"Annalise Stenekes has led the project since its inception and has gathered a dedicated and talented team of fixers who will attempt to repair a variety of items, including bicycles, lamps, home appliances, sewing machines, jewelry and audio/visual and computer equipment. Small furniture items will be repaired, clothing and footwear mended and toys given new life.
"Last year, 230 kilograms of items were given a new lease on life, diverting potential waste from the #landfill and saving an estimated $1,000.
"'#Repairing and #reusing broken items, as opposed to disposing of them and purchasing new ones, is a practical and meaningful contribution we can make for our environment,' says local resident Wendy Kirk. 'The Repair Café is also a feel-good place — at times the joy is tangible when someone’s prized item is restored to its former usefulness.'
"Repair Café events are happening around the world, saving money, reducing landfill waste, cutting CO2 emissions, promoting learning and fostering community connections."

Vielleicht kann mir jemand helfen: Unser Kärcher Fenstersauger (WV 6 Plus) geht nach der ersten Akkuladung überhaupt nicht mehr. Keine Aufladeanzeige, keine blinkende LED, nichts.
In einem Anflug ADHS'schen Übermuts habe ich ihn auseinander gebaut. Motor läuft noch, wenn ich ihm direkt Strom gebe. Auch Akkus haben noch Ladung, wenn ich es direkt messe. Ein SMD sieht angekohlt aus. Misst 10 Ohm widerstand, aufgedruckt ist "100". Kann es das sein? Was könnte ich noch prüfen? #Kärcher #repairing -

Whelp, feeling rather chuffed. Just disassembled our ailing 7yo front loader washing machine with my son, and we replaced the broken drain pump/impeller unit (luckily, we were able, after a lot of time researching, to figure out which part was right for that model. Put it back together and (amazingly) didn't have *any* screws left over. It passed various tests (like the ability to drain water, which was failing before), and it passed! Huzzah! #Repairing FTW!

I've already repaired a few devices such as coffee machines. Now I've been given an ironing station where the circuit breaker always trips.
I opened it and tested it with the insulation meter. The fault only really occurs when I set the test voltage to >250V. So I wouldn't get very far with a normal multimeter.
I actually thought it was the heating elements of the iron or the water tank, but that wasn't it. It was the solenoid coil for the steam valve. lol

I had an old Mini USB cable lying around that I made a long time ago ( https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/8ayr2l/my_15_cheap_diy_mechanical_keyboard_cable/ ). I cut the USB-A part, soldered it, hot-glued it to secure it, and it turned out pretty good 🤓.
Actually, the first time I closed it, it didn't work. Then it hit me—the hot glue I used to secure the cable at the root melted the solder inside the button😅.

So I'm doing some thinking and came to the question of what exactly am I doing here. (In so many contexts, but let's stick to the #Mastodon one for now.)
And the answer came that essentially I'm a #repairer. It's my main #hobby and if I didn't have to have a job then that's what I'd like to do instead.
So if future toots, that's what I'm going to discuss.

A UBI is generally how we tackle this problem equitably.A passionate #researcher can take the time they need to do their #research. But similarly an #entreprenuer can take a small part time job supplemented by a #UBI while doing R&D, a #volunteer can accept UBI while building #FOSS software or #repairing stuff etc.
It's possible – we just need to push a bit harder.
