Updated 10:15 AM EDT, August 30, 2025OGUNQUIT, Maine (AP) — "Thousands of Americans will head to beaches for one last summer splash this Labor Day weekend, but taking a dip might be out of the question: Many of the beaches will caution against swimming because of unsafe levels of fecal contamination.
"Beaches from #CrystalRiverFL, to #OgunquitME, have been under advisories warning about water quality this week because of elevated levels of bacteria associated with fecal waste. The advisories typically discourage beachgoers from going in the water because the bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness, rashes and nausea.
"There have been closures this week at some of the country’s most popular beach destinations, including Keyes Memorial Beach in the #CapeCod village of Hyannis in Barnstable, Massachusetts; Benjamin’s Beach on #LongIsland in Bay Shore, New York; and a portion of the Imperial Beach shoreline near #SanDiego. Even on the pristine, white sand beaches of Hawaii, the Hawaii State Department of Health is warning of a high bacteria count at #KahaluuBeachPark on the #BigIsland.
"It’s a longstanding and widespread problem. Nearly two-thirds of beaches tested nationwide in 2024 experienced at least one day in which indicators of fecal contamination reached potentially unsafe levels, conservation group Environment America said in a report issued this summer.
"The group reviewed beaches on the coasts and #GreatLakes and found that 84% of #GulfCoast beaches exceeded the standard at least once. The number was 79% for #WestCoast beaches, 54% for #EastCoast beaches and 71% for #GreatLakes beaches."The report also said more than 450 beaches were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least 25 percent of the days tested. A key reason is outdated water and #SewerSystems that allows contamination from #sewage to reach the places where people swim, said John Rumpler, clean water director and senior attorney with #EnvironmentAmerica.
" 'These beaches are a treasure for families across New England and across the country. They are a shared resource,' said Rumpler, who is based in Boston. 'We need to make the investment to make sure that literally our own #HumanWaste doesn’t wind up in the places where we are swimming.'
"Other factors have also played a role in contaminating beaches, including increasingly #SevereWeather that overwhelms sewage systems, and suburban sprawl that paves over natural areas and reduces the #ecosystem’s ability to absorb #stormwater, Rumpler said."

Spike in #jellyfish sightings prompts coastal safety warnings across #Maine
#SouthernMaine communities advise beachgoers to stay alert with increased jellyfish sightings.
Published: 3:29 PM EDT June 24, 2025
Updated: 8:49 PM EDT June 24, 2025MAINE, USA — "Coastal communities in southern Maine are warning beachgoers to stay alert after a rise in jellyfish sightings, including the presence of large #LionsManeJellyfish and #MoonJellies along the shoreline.
"Municipal officials and public safety departments have issued safety advisories in recent days for swimmers, families, and pet owners visiting local beaches.
" 'Today, you may notice our lifeguards flying a purple flag alongside the green flag,' the #OgunquitME Fire Department said in a social media post. 'This indicates the presence of marine life hazards—specifically an increase in lion’s mane and moon jellyfish in our local waters, as well as at other beaches along the Maine coast.'
"While most jellyfish encounters are not harmful, officials said there have been 'a few instances of jellyfish stings locally.' Lion’s mane jellyfish, in particular, can deliver painful stings that remain potent even after the jellyfish wash ashore.
"In #EliotME, police issued a warning after recent sightings near Dead Duck at the Eliot Boat Basin. The department urged caution, especially for families with dogs.
" 'Dogs are especially at risk,' the Eliot Police Department said. 'Curious sniffing or contact can lead to serious injury or illness.'
"Officials recommend keeping pets and young children away from the water’s edge if jellyfish are visible. In addition to avoiding contact, beachgoers are encouraged to report sightings to lifeguards.
"At #WillardBeach in #SouthPortlandME, a nearly five-foot-wide lion’s mane jellyfish was spotted over the weekend, according to the city’s parks and recreation department. Lifeguards have been trained to safely remove jellyfish that wash ashore using tools like shovels.
" 'If you see one, don’t touch it,' the city advised in a public post. 'They sting. Observe it—they’re interesting to watch and pretty too.'
"Those interested in helping marine researchers track #JellyfishSightings can report #observations through regional #CitizenScience platforms or agencies like the #GulfOfMaineResearchInstitute or #BigelowLaboratory for Ocean Sciences.
"In the meantime, officials are reminding visitors to enjoy Maine’s beaches safely and stay informed."

#PrideMonth kicks off in #Maine with celebrations and resources for #LGBTQ+ community :better_pride: 🏳️🌈
by Aysia Reed, June 2nd 2025 at 5:59 AM
#PortlandME (WGME) -- "It's Pride Month and there are multiple celebrations kicking off across the state this June. It's also important to recognize resources available for the #LGBTQ+ community.
#EqualityMaine is an organization working to secure full equality for #LGBTQ+ people.
"They have plenty of resources for LGBTQ+ youth, including what #StudentRights are in #Maine to information about #QueerCamps for ages 13 - 17.
"Equality Maine also has resources for networking for older adults. That includes a virtual statewide social hour on June 11 and a LGBTQ+ lunch in Hallowell at their community center.
"The group says there has been a lot of concern about changes to transgender health care but ensures there are still strong legal protections in Maine for #transgender health care in the state.
"There are Pride celebrations taking place in Portland, #OgunquitME, Lewiston-Auburn, and more this month.
"The #PridePortland Parade and Festival will be held in Portland on June 21.
"It's Maine’s largest Pride parade. It kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Monument Square with more than 100 groups expecting to march.
"This year's theme is '#MaineTranscends.'
"A three-day Pride celebration will be held in Ogunquit. The weekend Pride celebration kicks off with a Pride Picnic at The Front Porch and a Kick-Off Party at the West Meadow Pub on Friday evening with live music and Pride themed cocktails.
"The main event is a Saturday flag raising in Veteran’s Park, followed by a 'Pride in the Park' event featuring food trucks, live entertainment and LGBTQ+ vendors promoting items, programs and services.
"Folks in Lewiston and Auburn kicked off Pride Month on Sunday with the Great Falls Pride march. The organizers of the event say it’s so valuable to recognize this month.
" 'Given politics and the state of the world right now there is a lot of rhetoric and a lot of strong feelings against our community right now, so I think it’s good to have a space to come together to celebrate and it’s wonderful to see allies together, people show up for us,' said Alex Pine, a #GreatFallsPride organizer.
" '#Queer, #TransPeople, come from all walks of life. We come from all creeds and colors, and it's good for us to come together and see that for each other,' said Beatrice Roseland, who attended the Great Falls Pride march."

Mt Agamenticus Hike • 1-2 mile hikes • https://www.trailspotting.com/2023/07/mt-agamenticus-york-me.html
Diminutive though its 692 foot peak might be, the prominence of Mount Agamenticus was once mighty enough to be a landmark for sailors off the coast of Maine in pre-GPS days. Today's visitors to the mountain's wide domed summit will find themselves looking out from this area's highest point, identifying lighthouses and on the clearest of days even the tall buildings of Boston.

The extremely popular Marginal Way in Ogunquit is a 1 mile paved coastal trail. Combine with a visit to the public beach to the north, or a seafood platter by Perkins Cove.
