10 Easy Ways to Preserve Your Garden #Harvest (#Freezing, #Pickling, and More)
Written By: Catherine Boeckmann, last updated August 7, 2026
"What do you do with the bounty from your garden? Freeze it, pickle it, dry it, store it! If you’re new to preserving food, here are 10 quick and easy ideas—from freezing mint in ice cubes to making a small-batch pesto recipe using just a handful of basil leaves!"
Includes recipes for:
#RefrigeratorPickles #QuickPickles #Recipes #FoodPreservation #Pesto #FreezingHerbs #DryingHerbs #FreezeBerries #ZucchiniBread #OvenDryTomatoes #RefrigeratorJam #FreezingCorn #HerbalVinegarsExcerpt: "Store Long-Lasting Crops
Little or no special equipment is required to put these goods away until you want them:
#Apples: Apples keep well for about 6 months at temperatures above freezing but below 45°F. If you don’t have a root cellar, a double cardboard box in a cool basement can approximate the conditions.
#Carrots: After harvesting, remove the green tops and brush off any excess dirt. Put the carrots into a cardboard box and pack dry sand around them. Store the box in a cool basement.
#Onions and #Garlic: Hang mature, dry-skin onion bulbs in a mesh bag in a cool, dry, airy location. Braided onions and garlic can also be hung.
#RootVegetables: If covered with a thick layer of mulch (hay, dried leaves, straw), carrots, garlic, horseradish, leeks, parsley, parsnips, radishes, and turnips can be left in the ground well into the winter and harvested into the spring."

“As we navigate the intensifying impacts of the 2026 El Niño, the vulnerability of our global food systems require careful evaluation. With this year’s erratic weather patterns driving severe, prolonged droughts in some regions and unseasonal, devastating floods in others, the climate crisis is proving that it is not a distant threat; it is happening right now, in our fields and on our plates.
This crisis is more visible in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. Often called the “water tower of Asia,” this vast mountain range sustains 240 million people across eight countries and provides essential ecosystem services to nearly 2 billion people downstream. When glaciers melt at accelerated rates and monsoons become unpredictable, the narrative often focuses solely on the mountain communities. But the truth is much broader: a disrupted harvest in the high hills of Nepal or Bhutan creates a domino effect. It leads to displaced populations, reduced agricultural output flowing into the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra basins, and ultimately, skyrocketing food prices for families living in the sprawling downstream plains.
The climate crisis respects no borders and recognizes no difference between altitude and sea level. Because this problem affects us all, the solution must protect us all. Fortunately, the means to overcome this challenge are already in our hands, locked within the ancient seeds of the mountains…”

'When I first became involved in advocating for eastern #tarakihi in 2019, #Fisheries New Zealand’s own #science estimated the eastern stock had fallen to around 16% of its unfished #biomass—well below the 20% soft limit and nowhere near the #Harvest Strategy Standard target of 40%.
'Six years later, we’re paying substantially more at the checkout, yet the eastern stock remains well under a rebuilding-plan target.
'Recent projections suggest it is still hovering around the lower management thresholds, with recovery far from assured under current catch settings.
'That should concern every New Zealander.
We’ve somehow normalised the idea that a fish can become increasingly expensive while remaining chronically depleted. Consumers are paying more, commercial operators continue #fishing, and we’re repeatedly told the #fishery is being managed “#sustainably”.'If this is what #sustainability looks like, perhaps we need to rethink what the word means.
'A truly #sustainable fishery shouldn’t require decades of rebuilding while the stock remains well below the level our own management system says it should achieve. It shouldn’t leave us debating whether 10–20% of the original spawning biomass is acceptable, and it most certainly shouldn’t have us celebrating modest improvements while remaining nowhere near the target.'
.....
'Perhaps the real question isn’t why the price has risen, it’s whether we’ve convinced ourselves that #depletion has become an acceptable definition of sustainability.

Optical, Radar, And Hybrid Indices To Detect Farming Practices In Europe
--
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2026.115553 <-- shared paper
--
“HIGHLIGHTS:
• [they] compare[d] Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series to detect farming practices.
• HyBRIS index is introduced, temporally weighting BSI and VH/VV into a daily index.
• Time-series minima and maxima are used to predict sowing, harvest, and tillage.
• Validation is performed across several years, crop types, and European locations.
• Phenology detection is improved compared to HRL-Cropland.
ABSTRACT: Arable farming practices dictate both crop cycles and soil dynamics, and are central to agriculture's environmental impact and its mitigation. Sowing and harvesting mark the beginning and end of the growing season, while tillage modifies soil structure during the dormant period. Although well-established methods exist for delineating the growing season using phenology and optical data, the detection of farming practices, particularly tillage, remains underexplored. This study investigates the strengths of radar and optical data to retrieve sowing, harvest, and tillage dates at the field level, and proposes a novel Hybrid Bare Soil Radar Index (HyBRIS). Based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, HyBRIS merges optical and radar data into a single index using a temporally weighted mean. Local minima and maxima of the time series are used to detect farming practices across European sites. Validation is carried out against a reference dataset comprising 238 fields in 11 EU countries, including 462 sowing, 374 harvest, and 388 tillage events covering more than 40 crop types over 8 years. Compared to the Copernicus High Resolution Layer Croplands product (HRL-Cropland), the proposed method based on HyBRIS time series improved sowing and harvest dates detection (MAE 26 and 23 days, respectively). Additionally, this method enabled tillage dates estimation during dormant periods (MAE = 28 days), but tended to overestimate the number of tillage events (producer's accuracy = 97%, user's accuracy = 70%). Incorporating soil moisture data is advised for reducing false positives. The results highlight the potential of optical, radar, and hybrid indices for monitoring agricultural management and supporting environmental stewardship…”

Dude! No, it's not what you might think, it's sweet annie (Artemisia annua) that grows nearly as weeds in the garden but, as I get high demand for it from friends, I've collected and am now drying for storage roughly 10 kg of it on a 1 x 1 m tarp. I mean, that's a lot of medicinal, herbal tea!! We also won't need any incense in the house for the foreseeable future, I'm sure 😂 (I find its smell pleasant though).
