  9. Beans did great this year, we ate loads, froze some and they just kept coming.

    Peas are done, we let some dry for seeds and tore out the plants and supports.

    The last two surviving sweetcorn cobs were the largest and so got plucked and peeled to dry for seeds.

    Also got seeds from the two tobacco plants that popped up randomly after we dug over the former greenhouse for the first time. Nobody here smokes, but I'm kinda curious to experiment with them.

    Cucumbers are done too.

    Even managed to save a few hazelnuts from the mad squirrels this year.

    Just pumpkins, sunflowers and apples left now. And the apples are pretty sour still. Not enough sun. Endless rain.

    Sorte "Rote Spitzel"
    Es ist eine alte deutsche Tomatensorte, die sich hervorragend für die Herstellung von Saucen, Passata oder Ketchup eignet, weil
    - sehr große Früchte
    - sehr viel Fruchtfleisch an der Schale und im Inneren, wenige Kerne
    - saftig, etwas weich, aber wenig Wasser
    - etwas feste Schale, aber die wird bei uns einfach "unterpüriert"
    - Es muss nicht so viel "grün" herausgeschnitten werden wie bei Ochsenherzen.
    - typischer Tomatengeschmack, wenig Säure
    - kräftige Pflanze mit sehr gutem Ertrag

    Bisher keine Krankheiten oder Ausfälle.

  11. Another day of rain showers. Managed to do a lot of weeding and pick some stuff from the garden.

    Lots of beans hiding in there, plenty of peas and the three cucumber plants are producing enough cucumbers to eat every day.

    Must remember not to put cucumbers next to beans. Too dense jungle makes harvesting difficult.

    This crisis is more visible in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. Often called the “water tower of Asia,” this vast mountain range sustains 240 million people across eight countries and provides essential ecosystem services to nearly 2 billion people downstream. When glaciers melt at accelerated rates and monsoons become unpredictable, the narrative often focuses solely on the mountain communities. But the truth is much broader: a disrupted harvest in the high hills of Nepal or Bhutan creates a domino effect. It leads to displaced populations, reduced agricultural output flowing into the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra basins, and ultimately, skyrocketing food prices for families living in the sprawling downstream plains.
    The climate crisis respects no borders and recognizes no difference between altitude and sea level. Because this problem affects us all, the solution must protect us all.   13. Picked some things. A pepper with a bit of a scar/scab, 4 runner beans, a short and stout zucchini, and a tall and skinny zucchini... oh and the normal looking crook-neck squash. I also saw some tomatoes were nearing a shade of red.

This study investigates the strengths of radar and optical data to retrieve sowing, harvest, and tillage dates at the field level, and proposes a novel Hybrid Bare Soil Radar Index (HyBRIS). Based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, HyBRIS merges optical and radar data into a single index using a temporally weighted mean. Local minima and maxima of the time series are used to detect farming practices across European sites. Validation is carried out against a reference dataset comprising 238 fields in 11 EU countries, including 462 sowing, 374 harvest, and 388 tillage events covering more than 40 crop types over 8 years. Compared to the Copernicus High Resolution Layer Croplands product (HRL-Cropland), the proposed method based on HyBRIS time series improved sowing and harvest dates detection (MAE 26 and 23 days, respectively). Additionally, this method enabled tillage dates estimation during dormant periods (MAE = 28 days), but tended to overestimate the number of tillage events (producer's accuracy = 97%, user's accuracy = 70%). Incorporating soil moisture data is advised for reducing false positives.
