With all this squash harvesting going on, it was time to start sharing with the neighbors. We're setting aside quite a few for ourselves and passing on the surplus. Between yesterday and today we shared out about 180. We'll get a grand total of the overall harvest as soon as I'm done picking, but it looks like we may top 300 this year. We'll keep you posted.

Still a feeling of summer and abundance here. I'm so grateful this year, knowing well it won't last for long. The nights are getting near freezing point.

The potatoes had two weeks to cure and dry in the barn since harvest, so its time for the final work.
Haul them back out to sort, crumble off the chunks of dirt (it was an inevitably moist harvest) and lug them into the little basement under the house.
I didn't bother weighing them but a very rough guesstimate would be around 300 kg.
Plus a few damaged ones to eat soon and two small crates of baby potatoes which don't store well but are delicious autumn food, boiled with the skins on.
Ready for a cepelinai* party.

And to complete the cycle, we remove all the vines and chop up the weeds and haul them off to the compost pile. We will them reset the marker line down 3 or 4 feet and start the process again. Just hope the dry weather holds for a few more days.

The retirement of this year's tomato plants has begun.
When critters trashed two of my Romas at the community garden, I was lucky to find the very last Roma flat at my local hardware store. Two went to the garden plot and I planted the remainder in my back yard garden.
They produced! Not a lot, I just threw them into the ground with a bit of fertilizer and mulch. But they did good and now one is becoming compost.
It's time to start putting things to bed.

The first seedlings from the 2026 Venus Flytrap harvest are ready to plant. I water germinated them this time and it seems to have worked. I think I will put them in the bog. The last stalk with seed pods is still attached and should be ready to pull in a few days.

The field mushrooms are sprouting again. After we've identified them last time as almost certainly agaricus campestris, I ate one yesterday and am not dead or have bloody intestines gushing out of my ears, so we can conclude they're food.
It was also really nice. Compared to the portobello from the shop, firmer and juicier but that may well be due to having been eaten within an hour of plucking instead of knocking around various warehouses, trucks and supermarket shelves.

I can't remember where I got this information, but I heard that it's best to leave as much of the stem as possible when harvesting winter squashes. Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage. BTW, this is a mini variety of butternut called "Butter Baby". We like them.

Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage.
