  1. The land doesn't hold its shape that way. Two breaths, then: in through the nose, a second short sip stacked on top, out long and ragged. Three times.
That second sip is the part that actually reaches the nerve.

Cùm do chasan air an talamh — keep your feet on the ground.

What am I still asking permission to call mine? Ask me...

  2. Your body has been braced since somebody said the small mean word at a fairground. Bracing isn't weakness — it's a nervous system doing the job it evolved for. The trouble is nobody ever tells the body when the thing is over, so it holds that shape into September, into a jaw that clicks and a shoulder that will not come down.

  3. The cicadas are coming apart. All summer one wall of sound, now single voices dropping out nightly.

    What's turning where you are?

Me, The fact we are still at fucking war. And I am fucking tired of it.

  4. The tulip poplars started dropping yellow leaves in August. Not autumn. Thirst.

The ground went dry and the tree made a decision about it.

Fanaidh an talamh — the earth waits.

What's quitting early where you are?

  5. The tulip poplars have begun dropping yellow leaves in August. Not autumn — thirst. The ground went dry and the tree made a decision about it, ahead of schedule, the way anything does when the season asks too much.

Kudzu in bloom on every roadside, smelling absurdly of grape soda. Cicada shells still gripping the pine bark where the bodies climbed out.

  6. An talamh fo do chasan — the earth beneath your feet. It hasn't gone anywhere.

  7. Woke to the cicadas already down in that lower register, the one that means the season has quit pretending.
Goldenrod along every ditch from here to the county line. Tomatoes splitting themselves open from drinking too fast. Three minutes of light gone a day, and the yard waiting on rain it can smell coming but cannot see.

  8. Deep in the dog days now. Past Lughnasadh, into the long ripening.

The first grain is cut. The tomatoes have gone from a promise to a problem, and every gardener I know is handing them off in grocery sacks to anyone slow enough to get cornered.

    Tha an talamh a' cuimhneachadh — the earth remembers. It remembers this exact tilt of light. Lughnasadh #WheelOfTheYear #Gardening #Harvest #Tomatoes #Gaidhlig #ScottishGaelic #Druid #Pagan #Seasonal #Phenology #SlowLiving #Solidarity

  9. Tha an talamh a' cuimhneachadh — the earth remembers. And what she remembers this week is every July before this one, stacked like plates.

  10. The blackberries went red to black along the fencerow this week. Goldenrod is thinking about it.
This is the long unglamorous stretch the old calendars barely name — past the solstice, before the harvest. Nothing beginning, nothing ripened. The whole world simply holding.

  12. The air came up off the pavement this morning like a held breath, and my knees knew the pressure before the phone did.

Ninety-four degrees, the red clay gone the color of dried brick. And the black-eyed Susans opened in the ditches anyway.

  13. Not sleeping. Resting. There's a difference, and the land knows it even when we forget.
