Aug 25, 1908: On this date Ray Anderson was born in Lake City, MN. He volunteered to serve in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, sailed for Spain on the SS Manhattan on 2/25/1938, & served as a machine gunner. He, along with 2 other soldiers, inadvertently walked into the fascist lines, was captured & held as a POW; he was among 71 exchanged on 4/22/1939.

The dog-day cicadas have gone ragged and uneven. The muscadines are coming ripe along the fencerows. Out in the dry ditches the rabbit tobacco is finally putting up its little everlasting flowers, the ones that hold their shape all winter after everything green has surrendered.

Aug 8, 1912: On this date Lawrence Cane was born in NYC. He fought in the Spanish Civil War, arriving in Spain aboard the Aquitania on July 25, 1937. He served with the Mackenzie-Papineau BN. Returned to the US on Dec 20, 1938. He enlisted in the US Army Aug, 1942. He landed at Utah Beach with the assault wave of Combat Engineers, D-Day, June 6, 1944. Awarded the Silver Star & Croix de Guerre. He died Nov 8, 1976 in Great Neck, NY.

In late 1937, Aalto worked again behind enemy lines with Spanish guerrillas in the Battle of Teruel. And on May 23, 1938, Aalto led the successful amphibious operation at Carchuna, Motril on the southern coast of Spain, which resulted in the rescue of 300 Republican prisoners held in the Fort of Carchuna. The raid was the only operation of its kind ever undertaken by the Spanish army. (3/5)
