  6. The land doesn't hold its shape that way. Two breaths, then: in through the nose, a second short sip stacked on top, out long and ragged. Three times.
That second sip is the part that actually reaches the nerve.

Cùm do chasan air an talamh — keep your feet on the ground.

What am I still asking permission to call mine? Ask me...

  11. Your body has been braced since somebody said the small mean word at a fairground. Bracing isn't weakness — it's a nervous system doing the job it evolved for. The trouble is nobody ever tells the body when the thing is over, so it holds that shape into September, into a jaw that clicks and a shoulder that will not come down.

  25. So you rinse it, seal it in a bag with barely damp sphagnum, and set it at the back of the refrigerator for ninety to a hundred and twenty days. In spring you plant it an inch down in a deep pot. Five to seven years later, fruit no corporation ever priced.

  27. High in tannins: they bind iron and blunt oral medications, so leave two hours either side of anything you take on a schedule. Skip it in pregnancy or if you're anemic. And be certain of your identification — alder is not buckthorn, and buckthorn is a violent purgative. If you're eighty percent sure about the tree, buy the bark instead. #Herbalism #Herbalist #Alder #Feàrna #FolkMedicine #Foraging #Botany #Nature #Gardening #Druid #Folklore #Gàidhlig

  28. Grey alder — Alnus incana, feàrna. For the throat that's been screaming.
Dried inner bark only, aged several months, never fresh — fresh bark will make you vomit, which is exactly why the old preparation insists on the drying. One teaspoon to a cup, simmered ten minutes, strained, cooled to warm. Gargle and spit. Good as an external wash on weepy skin and foot soaks.

  29. The long exhale is what actually pulls the brake. You'll feel it land behind the sternum, a half-inch drop, unmistakable.
Cuir do làmh air do chridhe — put your hand on your heart. Do it while you breathe, so the body has a witness.
Your jaw is doing something right now. Check.

  30. Before you touch the news: inhale through the nose, then — without exhaling — take a second short sip of air stacked on top of the first. Let it out slow through the mouth, longer than the inhale, like fogging a windowpane. Three rounds.
