So you rinse it, seal it in a bag with barely damp sphagnum, and set it at the back of the refrigerator for ninety to a hundred and twenty days. In spring you plant it an inch down in a deep pot. Five to seven years later, fruit no corporation ever priced.
Bi socair — be still.
What are you growing that won't pay off for years?

Is treasa tuath na tighearna — the people are mightier than a lord. An old sentence from a wet country full of people who lost, and lost, and are somehow still speaking the language the losing was supposed to end.

The long exhale is what actually pulls the brake. You'll feel it land behind the sternum, a half-inch drop, unmistakable.
Cuir do làmh air do chridhe — put your hand on your heart. Do it while you breathe, so the body has a witness.
Your jaw is doing something right now. Check.

Before you touch the news: inhale through the nose, then — without exhaling — take a second short sip of air stacked on top of the first. Let it out slow through the mouth, longer than the inhale, like fogging a windowpane. Three rounds.
That second little sip reinflates the collapsed sacs at the bottom of your lungs.

The land doesn't hold its shape that way. Two breaths, then: in through the nose, a second short sip stacked on top, out long and ragged. Three times.
That second sip is the part that actually reaches the nerve.Cùm do chasan air an talamh — keep your feet on the ground.

Your body has been braced since somebody said the small mean word at a fairground. Bracing isn't weakness — it's a nervous system doing the job it evolved for. The trouble is nobody ever tells the body when the thing is over, so it holds that shape into September, into a jaw that clicks and a shoulder that will not come down.

Sin thu fhèin! 👋Tha an t-àm ann a-nis buannaiche na farpais-sgrìobhaidh a bh’ againn san Lùnastal fhoillseachadh! 🏆Ach an toiseach, seo an cuspair a-rithist:Tha cuideigin a’ lorg uidheam-smachd cèin a chuireas an ùine air ais deich mionaidean.Dè thachras an uair sin?Someone finds a remote control that rewinds time by 10 minutes. What happens next?Cothrom èibhinn eile, tha sinn an dòchas, gus do chuid sgilean-sgrìobhaidh a chur gu feum! Ghabh triùir pàirt san fharpais - ’s iad Gwen, Steffi agus Jenny. Ach chan fhaod sinn ach aon bhuannaiche a-mhàin a thaghadh. Agus an turas seo……’s e Gwen a th’ ann. Meal do naidheachd! 🥇Leughaidh agus cluinnidh tu sgeulachd Gwen gu h-ìosal ⬇️ Seo dhut “An Dealbh Sgriosail”. A-rithist, dh’fhàs mi beagan cruthachail leis an eadar-theangachadh gu Beurla.
An Dealbh Sgriosail
Gwen[Gàidhlig]Bha Lilidh na h-oileanach ealain agus cha robh ach beagan uairean a thìde air fhàgail gus a pròiseact deireannach a chrìochnachadh. B’ e seo dealbh mòr de mhuir stoirmeil air an robh i air seachdainean de dh’obair a chur seachad, ach bha e fhathast a’ coimhead sgriosail!Nuair a ghabh Lilidh ceum air ais a choimhead air, bhuail i uidheam smachd iomallach an telebhisein far a’ bhùird. Rug i air dìreach mus do bhuail e an làr, ach bhrùth i am putan dearg gun fhiosta. Gu h-obann, las an seòmar agus mhothaich i gun robh an gleoc air leum air ais deich mionaidean...…

An Lanntair: In a special edition of our monthly social gathering for all creative islanders, we’re setting up a big screen to share two films by island artists, Jill Smith and the late Ron Coleman.
This is a limited capacity event so book early!
An Avebury Journey by Jill Smith
A pioneering performance artist, Jill Smith’s work was recently recognised by the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, who commissioned her for a year-long project, Zodiac Journey (in collaboration with photographer Mhairi Law) for the gallery’s 50th anniversary. An Avebury Journey, filmed on Super 8 in the early 1980s, marked the beginning of her transition from Jill Bruce, creative partner and wife of artist Bruce Lacey, to creating work on her own as Jill Smith. Unfinished at the time, the silent footage has now been edited by Izzy McEvoy and Jill Smith, and will be screened in public for the first time tonight, accompanied by an improvised live score by Andrew Eaton Lewis and Ralph Tonge.
Caught in this Moment of Time
Adapted from Ron Coleman’s play which toured Scotland, this short film directed by Ian Bustard is Ron’s final piece of work, and part of his remarkable legacy. Ron was a pioneering mental health and dementia activist who later became a playwright and poet. Caught in this Moment of Time dramatises his experiences as a writer with dementia, and his relationship with his AI home help, Alexa. In his final performance, Ron plays…Source: https://lanntair.com/events/event/artist-gathering-film-night/

The tulip poplars have begun dropping yellow leaves in August. Not autumn — thirst. The ground went dry and the tree made a decision about it, ahead of schedule, the way anything does when the season asks too much.
Kudzu in bloom on every roadside, smelling absurdly of grape soda. Cicada shells still gripping the pine bark where the bodies climbed out.

August is the month the year stops promising and starts delivering, and delivery is heavier than promise. The tomatoes come in faster than the counter can hold them. The goldenrod is up. The light leaves a few minutes earlier each evening, so slightly you register it in the shoulders before you register it in the sky.
