The tulip poplars have begun dropping yellow leaves in August. Not autumn — thirst. The ground went dry and the tree made a decision about it, ahead of schedule, the way anything does when the season asks too much.
Kudzu in bloom on every roadside, smelling absurdly of grape soda. Cicada shells still gripping the pine bark where the bodies climbed out.

The blackberries went red to black along the fencerow this week. Goldenrod is thinking about it.
