Do not eat it. Lichens absorb everything from the air; that's their whole nature, and it makes many of them mildly toxic and all of them efficient collectors of whatever drifts past.

Look on old stone. A thick pale crust, gray to buff, broken into small tiles with a darker rim, welded flat against granite anywhere the sun is hard and the water is scarce.

Lobothallia alphoplaca. Not a plant. A fungus and an alga that gave up living separately so long ago the arrangement counts as one organism now, growing a fraction of a millimetre a year.
