Here my first #vibecoded experimental project: #ArtenTracker (species tracker). My goal is to make #biodiversity data stored in scientific databases better accessible. Data is from #gbif. With this #prototype I want to find out whether pursuing this project further is promising. Feedback is very welcome. First shot: some results after two long evenings using #claudecode. Here you see distribution data of the #wildcat Felis sylvestris based on #gbif data. This is a webapp. Its an interesting experience to use claude. To get some results seems easy. But to get something that is really robust, valid and useful, still takes lots of effort.

Watch out: the weather is warming and the American ragwort aphids are *multiplying*.

American ragwort aphids specialise on Senecio plants, of which NZ has many species, including some threatened endemic species.

The aphid arrived in NZ (somehow) in 2023, and has since got to work munching on our plants. The American aphids are also now being tended and protected by exotic Australian ants.

In the South Island these aphids are still restricted to Christchurch city (at least based on observations on #iNaturalist and #GBIF).

It would be great if you could keep a look out for them in other places. They're the only big black aphid in NZ (black bodies and legs).

An overnight refresh to data from Observation.org has pushed the #GBIF index past #3billion occurrence records!

With *just* under 100 million records (wait till next week!), this 🇳🇱-based NGO is also a formal #GBIF Participant, whose massive #CitizenScience contributions often go overlooked.

For a workshop talk I'm working on, I looked up the public biodiversity data for Ōtautahi-Christchurch, #NZ. #iNaturalistNZ has 282,811 observations. #GBIF has 407,858 obs (incl. 115,098 research grade obs from iNat). I tallied up how many #wildcounts I've made from Ōtautahi, mostly from my bike rides to work and my weekend runs, and it's about 1,584,522 observations. So, about 4x everything else!

It underscores how very little biodiversity monitoring NZ does.

It's the #EndOfTheYear, so time to do some data housekeeping: like creating a new download of my RG #iNaturalistLU #biodiversity data @gbif and citing the #DOI on my @ORCID_Org profile.
By adding #ORCID to #iNaturalist it becomes easy to track ones research grade observations on #GBIF
6.191 #opendata records made available to #science 😍👍 and more to come.
