  9. First shot: some results after two long evenings using #claudecode. Here you see distribution data of the #wildcat Felis sylvestris based on #gbif data. This is a webapp. Its an interesting experience to use claude. To get some results seems easy. But to get something that is really robust, valid and useful, still takes lots of effort.

  15. Surprisingly, a springtail expert on iNaturalist has suggested a species ID for this springtail. I wasn't expecting it to be able to be identified to that detail, but it certainly matches the description. It looks like it's *Bourletiella arvalis*.

    That makes the springtail a lot more interesting than the moth it's on.

    The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (#GBIF) has 334 observations of the moth species (178 of which are from iNaturalist).

    GBIF has only 16 observations of this springtail species from New Zealand. If confirmed, my little hitch-hiker here will be the 17th.

  21. Introducing *Austramathes coelacantha*!

    I uploaded this moth to iNaturalist from my moth lighting last month in the NZ mountains. It's now the first iNat record of this NZ endemic moth, which was first described as a species in 2017.

    This adds to the five records of the species on GBIF from the NZ Arthropod Collection (four specimens from 1975 and one from 2023).

    It's known (so far) from shrublands and beech forests of central and eastern South Island. Its caterpillars have not been confirmed yet, although they're expected to be on *Melicytus* (mahoe and relatives).

    Big thanks go to NZ moth expert Neville Hudson for identifying this. Neville has so far made 171,359(!) species identifications on iNaturalist, almost all moths, and all done for free. It's an extraordinary contribution to our knowledge of NZ moths.

    It's a pretty wee thing but easily overlooked because it's tiny (see the second photo of it next to a green garden looper moth).

  30. Are there some #qgis and #linux Nerds here working with occurence Data from #gbif ? Under this set up my occurrence data is is way off were it should be despite correct kbs / projection. Also points are as decimal separators in the data as required in qgis. Under #windows and #qgis it’s all fine.

    It would be great if you could keep a look out for them in other places. They're the only big black aphid in NZ (black bodies and legs).

Turns out it's the first time this species, the New Zealand Mousetail, Myosurus minimus novae-zelandiae, has been seen on Banks Peninsula in at least many decades. The species is At Risk-Declining nationally and there are no records of it on #GBIF from the Canterbury region.

  35. When I was running up in the Christchurch Port Hills on Friday, I noticed and photographed a distinctive parasitoid wasp. It has a bright red head and thorax and the rest of it is black.

    I checked my photos against braconid wasps on #iNaturalist and figured out that it's the NZ endemic wasp, *Asobara antipoda*. That ID has now been confirmed by Otago Museum entomologist Steve Kerr on #iNaturalistNZ.

    This is only the third record of this species from the Canterbury region on #GBIF. Mine is the second record from iNat and the other is a pinned specimen collected in 1922 from the NZ Arthropod Collection.

    Poorly documented species like this are all around us, even in cities.

    I'll wait to hear the details from iNat on this. To operate at the scale they do, they use tech from Google (maps), Amazon AWS (photo storage), and Microsoft Azure (database hosting).

    Observations on iNat are owned by the observers and what can be done with our data depends on the licenses we place on our observations. Everything with an open license that reaches a "research grade" identification on iNat already gets shared with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (#GBIF), and can be downloaded directly from iNat.

    I've got all my observations licensed CC-BY so anyone can use them for anything.

  42. Just learning that #iNaturalist will export observations with obscured location coordinates to #GBIF as part of their 'research grade' dataset. I understand that research grade isn't a formally defined term, but I sure didn't expect it to include records that have had their data deliberately altered! You need to anticipate and check for all kinds of errors in public data like this, but people introducing errors on purpose is not something I considered checking for.

    I understand there is a good reason to obscure location data. But including altered records by default in 'research grade' is very unexpected. Holy smokes.

  46. Just curious what do you call the process of creating/assigning spatial feature (point, polygon or line) to a location description or other information about locality? Like assigning spatial feature to species finding from literature described like "10 miles NE. of Springfield".
