  1. Immature pied-billed grebe

Years ago I got this photo of an immature pied billed grebe in Miner's Marsh in Kentville, not far from us, and after seeing the lovely photos of grebes that Jim just posted today, I was inspired to dig this one out. Thanks for the encouragement, Jim.

  2. Some birds at the Marine Nature Study Area on LI, NY, on Thursday. All of these birds are migratory and are currently bottled up by the nor'easter moving up the east U.S. coast. Hopefully, they will make it through. Further details in alt-txt.

  3. A few birds at the Marine Nature Study Area, today. Early, it was cool and windy, and very few birds were seen despite the low tide. The pace picked up toward noon, but it was evident that we are nearing the end of the warm season for many species.

  4. The geese are leaving. Only a few left today and yesterday. Also there were swans. Autumn is coming, the weather has turned cold and rainy (it has been rainy all summer tbh) and the call of the teapot, cosy lights and some nice book or game is getting louder.

  5. Sculpted feathers of the Great Cormorant

A Great Cormorant sat on a rock at a Manly Dam picnic area. Out of one turquoise eye, it watched me as I approached. I took care to stick to the furthest edge of the picnic area, so that the bird wasn’t alarmed. The feathers of its wings look sculpted, so beautifully arranged are they in their muted colours.

  6. Heads Down on the River Lee

Two swans were feeding at the edge of the Lee Fields when I stopped. Both had their necks down in the shallows, working the seeds and crumbs in the same posture a second or two apart. It was exceptionally bright so I exposed for the highlights and everything else...

  7. Heads Down on the River Lee

Two swans were feeding at the edge of the Lee Fields when I stopped. Both had their necks down in the shallows, working the seeds and crumbs in the same posture a second or two apart. It was exceptionally bright so I exposed for the highlights and everything else went dark.

  8. Great Black-backed Gull at Jones Beach Friday, 8.14. One of the gull species whose catholic tastes and adaptability has allowed them to survive and flourish around human habitations. Apex predators in some habitats, they will feed on other birds and mammals. They also show the same propensity as other members of the family to engage in kleptoparasitism, stealing prey even from raptors like Peregrine Falcons. But, they are not above frequenting landfills in search of meals.

  9. A few photos of the pair of Wilson's Phalaropes that have been hanging out in the dune ponds at Jones Beach. This endangered species nests in the interior of the U.S., and stages for migration at salt lakes, like the rapidly vanishing Great Salt Lake in Utah. They are not usual visitors to our area. This shorebird is unusual for two reasons. First it actively forages in deeper waters, whirling at the surface to trap small fishes. Second, it shows reverse sexual dimorphism, with the female as the showier, larger bird, and a polyandrous mating system, in which females take multiple mates and the male rears the young. This pair is out of breeding coloration.

  10. One Snowy Egret stands out in a burst of black wings and flying water as a flock of Neotropic Cormorants takes off from Bray's Bayou. 🪶

For a few seconds, the bayou turned into a wall of wings, splashes, and airborne water—with that single white egret right in the middle of it.

  11. A juvenile Neotropic Cormorant turned one weathered stump into a lookout and a wing-drying perch. 🪶

The sequence shows its long tail, large webbed feet, slender neck, and dark wings from several angles above the pond.

  12. Perched above the rookery, this male Anhinga brings together some of the species’ most striking details: a long tail, silver-striped wings, a wind-tossed crest, and a brilliant blue eye ring. 🪶

The wider frame shows its distinctive silhouette, and the close portrait emphasizes the crest, eye, and patterned wings.
