  3. 📰 Mountain Lions Are Traffic Cops

🐆 Washington State: New research report says that deer were less likely to be found near roads in areas where mountain lions were active.

🚗 This predator effect was associated with substantially lower odds of deer-vehicle collisions, making roads safer for wildlife and people.

🌲Another example of a healthy ecosystem providing benefits beyond biodiversity. Top predators help shape wildlife behavior across entire landscapes.

  7. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐆🚗 On #Washington’s #OlympicPeninsula, camera traps and tracking collars show #deer shift their space and time use wherever #pumas roam, avoiding #roads and sleeping through the night hours when collisions are worst.

The result is a drop of up to 76% in deer-vehicle crashes where the #predators are most active. Notably, pumas deliver this benefit mostly by scaring deer, not killing them, essentially serving as free wildlife bridges.

  9. #WhitefishMT - #ConservationEasement enhances #WildlifeCorridor near Whitefish

Jan. 13, 2026 — "A newly created conservation easement along the #StillwaterRiver west of Whitefish is expected to help secure a critical wildlife corridor.

"Doug and Carolyn Kohrs worked with #FlatheadLandTrust to establish the 110-acre conservation easement earlier this month. The acreage, which augments a 655-acre conservation easement that the couple established in 2022, connects with the 1,560-acre #KuhnsWildlifeManagementArea and vast swaths of state and federally managed forestlands.

" 'Carolyn and I are excited to add this additional piece of wildlife-critical land to our existing easement,' said Doug Kohrs of the easement. 'Secure and safe wildlife corridors are important for all the different animal species who live in the valley, especially as the inevitable development creeps closer to their natural habitat.'

"The Kohrs have personally documented 95 bird species on the property, along with vital #wildlife species like #GrizzlyBears, #BlackBears, #MountainLions, #wolves, #bobcats, #elk and #deer. The easement also includes a stretch of the Stillwater River that provides habitat for #BullTrout and #WestslopeCutthroatTrout.

"The land was slated for an eight-home #subdivision before the Kohrs acquired it in 2005.

"The terms of the conservation easement prohibit division of the property and regulate construction to specific areas. The land can still be used for #agriculture.

"The easement is perpetual, meaning any future landowners would be required to abide by the same requirements.

" 'Just as this land serves as a vital anchor for a critical wildlife corridor, the Kohrs themselves have become a cornerstone of conservation in the #FlatheadValley,' reads a Jan. 6 press release from Flathead Land Trust. "Their dedication has created the essential framework for a landscape that remains open, connected and productive, ensuring that the region's natural character endures for generations."

  12. New copter of Camarillo is chasing mountain lions

"MOUNTAIN LION CAPTURED AFTER ROAMING CITY STREETS WEDNESDAY IN CAMARILLO:
A mountain lion was seen wandering city streets and residential areas early Tuesday afternoon in Camarillo.
The event caused a lot of activity from news copters, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, and Animal Control. The lion appeared to be frequenting a residential area near the 101 Freeway and Lewis Road."

  14. The mountain lion people were here today. I got so much information about our resident mountain lions and we were able to find the collared male’s recent kill, on our property, a deer carcass.
Nature sure beats the political shitshow.

  15. A man from Living With Lions, an Audubon Ranch project for tracking mountain lions in our area, just called to say a collared female has been spending a lot of time on our property and he’d like to come out and investigate. He said there is also a collared male in our area, and it appears the 3 kits born to the female a year ago are still following her. Hmmm, 5 mountain lions right out there! I’m excited to learn more. I have a hundred questions. This must explain why our local deer population is dwindling.

  16. The word “Nittany” is derived from the Algonquian word “Nit-A-Nee,” meaning “single mountain” or possibly “barrier against the wind”.

According to local folklore, Nit-A-Nee was also the name of a #NativeAmerican maiden whose actions led to the formation of Mount Nittany.

The name was already in use by the time #PennState was founded, and it became associated with the university’s mascot, the #NittanyLion, named after the #MountainLions that once roamed the area.

"In the last 10 years, Herasimtschuk has photographed forests across the #PacificNorthwest, documenting the inhabitants of these last remaining old-growth ecosystems. From #salamanders and #salmon to #bears and #MountainLions, his images illustrate not only the beauty of the #forests but the symbiotic relationships which are vital to the forests’ health and the planet’s welfare."

  21. #Biden expands two #California #NationalMonuments crucial to tribes
    washingtonpost.com/climate-env #USpol #Conservation

"The proclamations enlarge the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument... #Condors once soared in the skies there, but their population has declined because of lead poisoning, habitat destruction and poaching. The area is also home to #BaldEagles, #TuleElk, #MountainLions and other species."

  22. GRAND CANYON URANIUM MINING

"The public lands surrounding #GrandCanyon National Park contain high concentrations of uranium ore. Mining bores deep into vertical rock formations called 'breccia pipes,' making #uranium soluble to #groundwater and risking pollution to Grand Canyon’s biologically rich springs. They then leave most of the removed material in #tailing piles that contribute to #water and #air #pollution.

"Because #UraniumMining is not consistently profitable, these mining operations are often abandoned for decades at a time — without any oversight or continued maintenance of the work area.

"Large drilling sites, tailing piles and mines are often left open to the forces of nature — leading to leaks into #groundwater, dispersal of #airborne uranium pollution and #dust, and unsafe conditions for recreational visitors to public lands. And if and when these old mines are cleaned up, the cost burden usually falls on the American public.

"Even more disconcerting is the #toxic legacy left on public lands and sacred #AmericanIndian sites. Iconic landscapes have been marred, and sources of drinking water remain polluted. Manmade ponds containing uranium-contaminated water are left uncovered and used by native #birds and other #wildlife. These mines affect #abitat for more than 100 sensitive species, including #muledeer, #mountainlions, imperiled #Californiacondors and highly endangered native #fish.

"#Groundwater #pollution has the potential to seep into underground #aquifers used for drinking water and into seeps and springs that are the lifeblood for animals in the arid Grand Canyon region.

"The Center for Biological Diversity opposes all uranium mining near Grand Canyon. Over the past decade, we have worked through the courts, through Congress, with the president and in the media to prevent new uranium mining and force the closure and cleanup of old uranium mining sites. To date we have been successful in securing and defending a ban on new uranium mining claims for 20 years on the doorstep to Grand Canyon National Park and have pushed back the reopening of old uranium mines through aggressive litigation.
    Our work continues today.

"We've submitted a legal petition to the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management asking them to update old uranium-mining regulations that don't adequately protect #PublicLands, tribal communities and human health.

"We're supporting a campaign to designate a monument that would permanently ban new uranium mining on 1.7 million acres of land that contain the sacred sites of many American Indian tribes, habitat for endemic and endangered species, and tributaries of the #ColoradoRiver.

"And we're fighting existing uranium mines, and the efforts of the mining industry to roll back existing protections, in federal court."
