Five infected terns found at Kangaroo Island's Seal Bay — home to roughly 5% of the global population of a species found nowhere else on Earth — have pushed Australia's endangered Australian sea lion to the edge of a catastrophe that wildlife scientists say has no known response once it begins. Federal authorities confirmed 54 cases of H5N1 bird flu in wild seabirds across mainland Australia as of 9am AEST on August 2, 2026, a figure that nearly tripled in under 24 hours — and the virus is now carrying the specific biological pathway that killed an estimated 95% of elephant seal pups along a 124-mile (200 km) stretch of Argentine coastline in 2023, with no birds required.”

I spent last week on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, and it really exceeded my expectations. Winter is supposed to be a good time to see wildlife and I was not disappointed. Among the many highlights was visiting a sea lion colony that is thought to house about 8% of the entire population of this endangered species. And since this is the Fediverse I should say that their reputation for making bad faith arguments in comment threads is totally undeserved. #wildlife #sealions #straya
