Setting our world on fire as we stagger towards the flames.
* "This is not a natural calamity: it is being done to us knowingly."
Tim Winton"The dangerous conditions climate scientists long warned of have become our common, if deeply unwelcome, experience, and season by season, our acquaintance with disorder and extremities deepens. In both hemispheres, wildfires rage right into our cities and incinerate entire neighbourhoods. Marine heatwaves are bleaching corals and cooking seagrasses on a global scale. This northern summer has brought temperatures most Europeans associate with the Australian desert. Heat events in Europe have paralysed whole countries, destroyed infrastructure and killed citizens in their thousands."
"There’s nothing accidental or inadvertent about what we’re all suffering through together. We’ve had enough time now and have sufficient expertise to understand that this is not a natural calamity. This is something that is being done to us. Knowingly. Which makes it a crime." >>

"Hotter oceans
exacerbate the sea level rise and extreme storms that threaten billions of people, as well as driving marine heatwaves that decimate sea life and undermine coastal livelihoods, scientists warned.""The average surface temperature was 21.1C, with the rising marine heat a stark indicator of the climate crisis. More than 90% of the heat trapped by carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning enters the oceans."
"Most of the planet-heating CO2 from fossil fuel burning and forest destruction is absorbed by the oceans. However, a hotter ocean is less efficient at absorbing CO2. This is potentially weakening one of the planet’s most important natural buffers against global heating, the scientists said."
“Fossil fuel emissions need to be rapidly reduced. Meanwhile, it is essential that countries protect marine and coastal ecosystems. Kelp beds, mangroves and marshes absorb carbon and coral reefs protect against storms and provide habitat. More than 190 governments have committed to protect and conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030, and now is the time to turn that commitment into effective, durable conservation on the ground.” >>

Warming seas can threaten the hidden relationship that supports seagrass meadows
"Seagrasses are often overlooked, but they are among the most important coastal habitats on Earth."
"Our findings highlight an important idea: the impacts of climate change on seagrasses can’t be understood by looking at the plants alone. The microbial communities living in the sediment can also influence how these plants respond to warming. "
"This has important implications for conservation and restoration. Around the world, seagrass meadows are declining due to coastal development, pollution and climate change. "

Council wants to ban artificial grass on nature strips over microplastics and PFAS concerns
"Fake lawns produce microplastics and contain PFAS chemicals that should not be near gutters. Artificial turf has PFAS and it's not good for our stormwater...If it gets into the stormwater, it can contaminate it... It can get up to 90 degrees …It also leeches microplastics into the waterways, impacting ecosystems. And finally, it will eventually end up in landfill."

Global oxygen decline in the ocean
Ocean hypoxia: The science of climate change in the sea"... The field will need to draw on ... advances to meet demands for adaptation solutions to the continued progression of global ocean deoxygenation, particularly in conjunction with ocean acidification and marine heatwaves in a multi-stressor scenario."

Lives disrupted and stunted by ongoing climate disasters
"Unicef-commissioned report shows being unable to finish high school – and the associated wage loss – is the most significant impact of increasingly frequent disasters on young people. Experts and advocates fear the lifelong consequences facing young people are being overlooked in disaster responses as what were previously known as “one-in-a-hundred years” disasters increase in frequency and severity."
"Unicef Australia is calling for the government to create a policy framework to support young people during and after natural disasters. “[We need] a better plan around the things that children need, around education and having enough supports to help them with their mental health if they’re traumatised by an event."

Bandcamp has been doing shady union busting stuff lately, but @bandcampunited says to still take part in Bandcamp Friday, since all payments directly benefit the artists today.
Today I figured I'd finally buy two of my favorite albums ever, the first of which is 'Final Days', the heavy-ish, synthy punky 2017 BANGER of an LP from Heavy Lids (It's only $9 for the digital version):
https://heavylids.bandcamp.com/album/final-days
The second album I grabbed today is my favorite album of 2023 so far, and I can't see anything topping it. 'Uncomfortable Fish' is a very strange, amazing album by Hot Ocean (it's name your own price, I chose $8!):
https://hotocean.bandcamp.com/album/uncomfortable-fish-3
If you're into punk or indie or synth or anything else, check these two out!
