  11. 📰 Coastal Marsh Restoration Fights Sea‑Level Rise

🌎 New Jersey, USA: Scientists are restoring coastal marsh habitat at Scotch Bonnet Island to help wetlands keep pace with rising seas.

🌾 The project is designed to protect marsh ecosystems that support wildlife and provide important ecological services. 32 bird species have been seen using the area for resting and fishing, including a rare American Golden-Plover.

🤝 Wetland restoration is one of the most effective nature‑based approaches for increasing coastal resilience while safeguarding biodiversity.

“I think we can get a lot of wetlands back. They’re not always on this one-way street to destruction.”

  12. 📰 Community Restoring Water Cycles to Prevent Wildfires

🌍 Portugal: In the fire‑scarred Cova da Beira region, the ecosystem restoration community EcoAtivo is rebuilding the land’s natural water cycles to make forests cooler, wetter, and far more fire‑resilient.

💧 Water retention structures (swales, contour‑laid biomass, ponds, and beaver‑dam analogues) slow rainfall so it sinks into the soil instead of rushing away. This regenerates the small water cycle, boosting local humidity, groundwater recharge, and drought resistance. Healthy, water‑retentive landscapes burn less readily and recover faster.

🌱 EcoAtivo pairs these structures with native fire‑resistant vegetation like holm oak, chestnut, birch, and cork oak. These “living strips” reduce fuel loads, break up fire pathways, and rebuild biodiversity after Portugal’s devastating 2025 wildfire season.

🤝 Their EU‑funded Ash2Soil program turns restoration into culture. Citizens, scientists, and artists have seasonal gatherings where they restore land, make biochar, replant native trees, and transform findings into murals, films, and shared community memory.

  13. 📰 Fertilizer Imbalance Reduces Mycorrhizal Fungi

🌍 Austria: Long-term grassland plots reveal that low potassium combined with high nitrogen can *halve* the fungal partners plants rely on for nutrient uptake and drought resilience.

🍄 These fungi form vast underground networks that help crops access phosphorus and nitrogen, protect against pests, and maintain soil structure.

🌾 When fertilizer regimes weaken this symbiosis, soils lose resilience—effects that may not show up in yields immediately but erode ecosystem stability over decades.

🤝 Researchers say diversifying the fungal families used in agriculture could strengthen soil health under nutrient‑stress conditions.

  16. 📰 Megafire Could Not Kill the Fungi 🔥

🌎 Mojave Desert: The 2020 Dome Fire wiped out a million Eastern Joshua Trees, leaving a haunting landscape of charred trunks.

🍄 But underground? The mycorrhizal fungi community held strong, diverse, abundant, and even joined by fire‑loving specialists.

🌱 This resilience means restoration efforts don’t need costly soil amendments. The fungal partners are still there, ready to help new seedlings if they can survive drought and herbivores.

💪 Even in extreme disturbance, fungal networks endure, quietly anchoring ecosystem recovery.

#ShaylaChalifoux sub-consults for landscape architects on incorporating #NativePlants

    Edzi'u Loverin · CBC News · Posted: Nov 14, 2025

Excerpt: "According to the province of B.C., plant biodiversity in #BritishColumbia is unmatched in Canada, with at least 2,500 native vascular plant species, in addition to thousands of lichens, mosses and fungi.

"Individuals can help support the land by planting native plants in pots on their balconies and gardens, said Chalifoux.

" 'Why would you plant a native plant here? Because host nations have a relationship with that, or this specific plant is a host plant for a larva, a native butterfly, that needs to eat only this plant to survive,' said Chalifoux.

" 'The land is hurting. One way we can help the land is by incorporating native plants.'

"Chalifoux said though things are changing, not many municipalities have policies to ensure a percentage of native plants are included in city landscaping.

"#CBCIndigenous asked the City of #Vancouver if it had any policies around the number of native plants required to be planted in urban planning.

"A City of Vancouver spokesperson said in a statement that the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is working to increase native plants in #UrbanSpaces and considers a number of factors in planning, including maintenance, resilience, and canopy cover, and consults with local #FirstNations.

"A prime example of this is the addition of #PacificYew to the Stanley Park Restoration initiative, upon receiving feedback from local First Nations," said the statement.

"The city said it has also provided native plants for #EcologicalRestoration in Vancouver parks to non-profits and community groups that hold community planting events."

📰 World’s Rarest Wolf Gets Road Crossings

🚸 Safe road crossings are in the design phase for a highway that is known for the deaths of rare red wolves. This is part of a $25M grant from a US Federal Highway Administration effort, the Wildlife Crossings Pilot program.

🐺Red wolves used to roam all over the Southeastern U.S. but became extinct in the wild in 1980. Releases of captive wolves began in 1987 into North Carolina’s Alligator River Wildlife Refuge.

🚗 Once their numbers rose to about 130, they started to reduce again. One reason is that they were being hit by cars, many of which were driven by tourists going back and forth to the Outer Banks on Highway 64.

🔭 Anyone can go to the park to see the red wolves, but they typically remain hidden. At night, though, you can hear them howl.
