Hi, my name is KM Herkes, and I'm a neurodivergent creative who writes #hopepunk & #fantasy novels I'm also a gardener, a baker,, & a collector of shiny things. Sometimes I work at a public library.
I live in the Midwest w/ 3 cats & one spouse in a big old house with a small yard full of native plants & pollinators. I love bad movies, good food and non sequiturs.

About the art process behind my book covers…and a question...
I began abstract painting around 2015–2016 after many years of realistic pen and ink sketching connected to my architectural work. Over time, colour, geometry, and nature shifted my practice toward abstraction.
In 2022, I gave an artist talk at the Lundt‑Glover Gallery in Chatham, NJ, hosted by the Art League of the Chathams, where I discussed my work at the time, including digital developments in NFTs and my decision not to pursue that direction.
Later that year, I began the 27‑painting series that my current ecofiction trilogy covers are based on, using four panels from that show as the starting point for the newer work.

The piece shown, Wellness, was part of the solo show and later became the cover for our ASEI Arts international charity anthology, Anthology House Vol. 2, created to benefit UNICEF.

We seem to be getting numb to the climate change driven disasters killing thousands around the world. However, we need to act quickly to not just end GHG emissions but also move masses from already deadly places to relatively safer ones. We need explore new ideas to do this via both fiction and nonfiction. “A New Faith” is one such effort.

"Isaac Brock has long been vehemently opposed to #urbanization and the #DestructionOfNature, and these have remained central lyrical themes going back to the band's earliest material (per Paste Magazine). As Healthline notes, such feelings of frustration towards environmentally destructive practices, anger at the seeming inevitability of #ClimateChange, and fear for the Earth's future are called eco-anxiety –- and Brock has been suffering from it for years.
"In Pitchfork's 2012 '#LonesomeCrowdedWest' documentary, he described living in Washington State in the '90s as having a 'front-row seat to watching #forests disappearing and #UrbanSprawl begin,' lamenting the constant clearing of natural places to make way for #StripMalls. In fact, he was still thinking about it in 2021 when he told Uproxx that his childhood home regularly flooded due to forest #clearcutting.
"Many Modest Mouse songs center on shameless human destruction, with the 2015 hit '#LampshadesOnFire' -– in which Brock sings about mankind going to space to find a new planet after destroying Earth -– serving as a notable example. But in recent years, he's making an effort to focus on the positive, as evidenced by hopeful songs like 'The Sun Hasn't Left,' in which he sings, 'You're not wrong, things are a mess but there's still something left.' Well, it’s almost 7:30 AM, I’m nauseated, so I’ve been doing some light reading.
And it appears that there are more people who also said “fuck it” to systems in play going on in the world right now and are also rolling with the punches while trying to build better ways of doing things. One of those people is English professor Jem Bendell. I’m not sure yet if I agree with everything he’s doing/believes in (but then again, do you ever?) because I’m still exploring and contemplating all that he has to say, but he did publish a fascinating piece on his site back in February 2024 about deep adaptation to climate crisis, massive social change, and collapse, and how sometimes saying fuck it and making a huge life change in light of all of that is the least risky option.
Given everything that’s going on politically here in the States, I think it’s well worth the read and to do some thinking about, even if you don’t agree with most or all of what he says.
