  2. I've reactivated this account for times when I want to be a different me, so here's a new #introduction.

Hi, my name is KM Herkes, and I'm a neurodivergent creative who writes #hopepunk & #fantasy novels I'm also a gardener, a baker,, & a collector of shiny things. Sometimes I work at a public library.

I live in the Midwest w/ 3 cats & one spouse in a big old house with a small yard full of native plants & pollinators. I love bad movies, good food and non sequiturs.

Can anyone recommend a book by Susan Kaye Quinn for me to start with. I thought I'd seen folks talking about her books on here but I can't find it now.

(Or other writers of solar punk, lunar punk, hopepunk, grimmer utopias, or other speculative fiction that's neither full nightmare nor toxically unrealistic positivity?)

  6. this short nhk doc is heartwarming and hopeful. it follows several young "hikikomori" - shut-ins or hermits - who have withdrawn from society, as they learn to navigate life after profound disappointments and stress, while learning how to cultivate and harvest eggplant.

watch here, free (27 min, japanese + english narration, with english subtitles):
    www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/sho

i've been through reclusive and seclusive periods of my life, where shutting myself away seemed like the only option, and recognize the extreme shame and fear these young people are going through as they try to escape that gravity well.

i hope that some day i can help build a supportive environment like this. it warms my heart to see people trying so hard.

Do you have any self-imposed rules for your creative work?

I write #HopePunk so every story must end on a hopeful note. This doesn't mean things can't get bleak in the middle, but the conclusions are all "happy for now."

  8. About the art process behind my book covers…and a question...

I began abstract painting around 2015–2016 after many years of realistic pen and ink sketching connected to my architectural work. Over time, colour, geometry, and nature shifted my practice toward abstraction.

In 2022, I gave an artist talk at the Lundt‑Glover Gallery in Chatham, NJ, hosted by the Art League of the Chathams, where I discussed my work at the time, including digital developments in NFTs and my decision not to pursue that direction.

Later that year, I began the 27‑painting series that my current ecofiction trilogy covers are based on, using four panels from that show as the starting point for the newer work.

    Three good things:
    1. Making art.
    2. Sharing art.
    3. Selling art to pay for more art supplies!!!

Watch the full 38‑minute talk here: youtu.be/X400L4JI-LQ

The piece shown, Wellness, was part of the solo show and later became the cover for our ASEI Arts international charity anthology, Anthology House Vol. 2, created to benefit UNICEF.

A question for my art and book lover peeps here: when you think about art and the art of book covers, what lights you up, what inspires you, and what are you drawn to reach out for?

We seem to be getting numb to the climate change driven disasters killing thousands around the world. However, we need to act quickly to not just end GHG emissions but also move masses from already deadly places to relatively safer ones. We need explore new ideas to do this via both fiction and nonfiction. “A New Faith” is one such effort.

  19. Essay - How the climate conversation went punk

From #SlowFashion to #GuerrillaGardening, the internet has transformed solarpunk, a literary movement, into an alternative lifestyle trend.

    Written by Sonal Gupta
    Mumbai | Updated: November 20, 2025

Excerpt: "In 2020, #SolarPunkFarms cropped up in California as a #communal living space whose inhabitants grow and share their own food. The leftovers are sent to local markets. They have designed their #greenhouse after the animations of #HayaoMiyazaki. In fact, the works of the #StudioGhibli founder have found resonance among solarpunks, as he places nature as a character in his plots. In his visions, nature is at its most beautiful—lush greenery, rays of light, the dew on leaves, and the wind blowing life into trees.

"Though these changes are encouraging, it’s ironic that as we move past dystopian visions, the #capitalists of the world, running in the #AI race, threaten to steer us to the very future. The use of AI itself depletes water resources and generates immense amounts of greenhouse gases and electronic waste. If we are to live in a world where technology exists in harmony with #nature, #activists, stakeholders, and individuals must actively call for more #SustainableSolutions, #AffirmativeAction, and policy changes.

"If cyberpunk warned us of what happens when technology consumes humanity, solarpunk invites us to imagine what is possible when humanity reclaims technology. It reminds us that hope, like sunlight, is a renewable resource too."

  20. Hello fediverse solarpunks! We’re Solarpunk Presents Podcast, a podcast run on a shoestring budget by two lady solarpunks, one in Canada (@arielkroon) and one in Germany (@[email protected]). We’re not great with technology, but we happen to both be PhDs from the opposite sides of the spectrum between STEM and Humanities/the Arts, and we’re united in our working towards solarpunk futures.

Our podcast is an interview-style podcast where we talk to guests and each other about various aspects of solarpunk, renewable energies, political action, and more. Often, our guests are people who wouldn’t label themselves as solarpunks, but are (and have been, often for years) quietly involved in working towards making the world a better place to live in. We strongly believe that once you get past the aesthetic and hype about renewables, solarpunk at its core promotes compassion, kinship with non-humans and humans alike, and grace for our fellow human beings as we all work together to survive on our shared planet.

You can support the podcast on Patreon, with tiers starting at just $1 USD! We host a monthly solarpunk hangout that all of our patrons are invited to, and all Patrons at the $3 tier and up receive early access to our episodes. There are more tiers with more extras, so head to patreon.com/solarpunkpresents to see them all. We also take one-time or recurring donations over at our PayPal: paypal.com/donate/?hosted_butt
Even if you’re not in the financial position to donate, we really value other forms of support, such as positive reviews on your podcatcher of choice (it helps us be more visible and reach more solarpunks!), or subscriptions to our YouTube channel and comments there. As writers, we thrive on feedback, and we are continually trying to make the podcast better and want to know what you think.

As I’ve said before, it's rough out there for anyone valuing the environment, social justice, compassion, and more, and we want to keep doing our part to keep hope alive. We want to broaden the imagination of what it's possible to do to contribute to a better world, no matter who you are, where you live, or what life stage you're at.

  23. 7.10: Ariel & Christina Discuss the Solarpunk Merits of Walkaway by Cory Doctorow

Cory Doctorow’s 2017 novel Walkaway has a reputation in solarpunk circles as a great example of a solarpunk lifestyle, and a must-read book for everyone from the individual who lives and breathes solarpunk to the solarpunk-curious to general science fiction fans. But what is it about Walkaway that gives it solarpunk cred? Ariel and Christina ponder this, discussing features of the novel that could be considered solarpunk, and some that might be more post-cyberpunk than anything, and how some of the ideologies and technologies are or have been applied in our present world. Is the world of Walkaway an achievable solarpunk paradise, or a nice hopeful story featuring very cool gadgets and bites of lefty philosophy? Or something else entirely? What is the draw, here, anyway? Join us to think through some of the quandaries and ideas the book raises.

  24. Excerpt from "Tragic Details About #ModestMouse" from 2023...

    #IsaacBrock suffers from #EcoAnxiety

"Isaac Brock has long been vehemently opposed to #urbanization and the #DestructionOfNature, and these have remained central lyrical themes going back to the band's earliest material (per Paste Magazine). As Healthline notes, such feelings of frustration towards environmentally destructive practices, anger at the seeming inevitability of #ClimateChange, and fear for the Earth's future are called eco-anxiety –- and Brock has been suffering from it for years.

"In Pitchfork's 2012 '#LonesomeCrowdedWest' documentary, he described living in Washington State in the '90s as having a 'front-row seat to watching #forests disappearing and #UrbanSprawl begin,' lamenting the constant clearing of natural places to make way for #StripMalls. In fact, he was still thinking about it in 2021 when he told Uproxx that his childhood home regularly flooded due to forest #clearcutting.

"Many Modest Mouse songs center on shameless human destruction, with the 2015 hit '#LampshadesOnFire' -– in which Brock sings about mankind going to space to find a new planet after destroying Earth -– serving as a notable example. But in recent years, he's making an effort to focus on the positive, as evidenced by hopeful songs like 'The Sun Hasn't Left,' in which he sings, 'You're not wrong, things are a mess but there's still something left.' 'I found optimism where it actually existed because I needed it,' he told NME in 2021, adding, 'Y'know, I got three kids ... I don't think s***'s gonna get easier for everyone.' "

The Miles Grant and Stewart Grant detective novels are interesting, in that they seem to be doing a "case worthy of a book" per year, and after 24 years, Miles retires and Stewart takes over as detective.

The number of novels per month is going up. It used to hover around nine: two per week, with one in the partial week. But I've been reading some shorter books lately, which has boosted the number. Novellas remain rare.

Finally finished all the stories in Pioneering Women of Science Fiction, Christopher Broschell's collection of stories from the 1940s and 1950s.

  34. Heyo followers and friends and fediverse solarpunks, here’s your reminder for the day that we have a Patreon and we need support! This podcast is run by two people who are actively trying to figure out the very technology that we’re trying to use to broadcast solarpunk content out to the world, and that means we’re pretty busy and paying for this out of our own pockets. We are currently able to cover our hosting fee, but we aren’t able to like, actually properly compensate ourselves or pay for better equipment yet. It’s a goal we’re working on.

So if you like what we do, or you want some of that sweet sweet bonus content and early access to episodes, or just want to support solarpunk work in the present, please support us financially through Patreon (starting as low as $3 a month) or make a one-time donation through PayPal. If you’re hard up for cash, but still would like to support us and solarpunk in general but just can’t financially right now, it would still go a long way if you could take a moment to write us a review on your podcatcher of choice, or subscribe to our YouTube channel and leave us a comment on your favourite video. Sometimes we feel like we’re shouting into the void, and as writers we do thrive on feedback. If you really liked a certain episode, please share it with someone you know who you think would like it!
