Made some staging for my potting shed. All the wood came out of skips. The only cost was £3.29 for the screws. The red wood preservative I already had, probably used about 50 pence worth. Need to go on a sowing binge now and get it filled up. #allotment #greenhouses #SeedSowing #making #recycling #SkipDiving

#BrunswickME - Late Season #SeedSowing at Woodward Point
Friday, March 27, 2026
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM#WoodwardPointPreserve
219 Woodward Point Road
Brunswick, ME"March is late in the season?! For native plants it is! Most native plant seeds require a long time in the cold and snow of winter in order to germinate. But, there are a few species that don’t require this, and fortunately they’re all easy ones for beginning growers. Come join us for the last seed sowing workshop of the year!
We will guide a hands-on exploration of the many steps of growing #NativePlants from seed, and establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants. We will also learn about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique #SeedCollection and seed sowing processes.
Participants will practice winter seed sowing themselves, leaving one pot for the new #CommunitySeedGarden at Woodward Point Preserve, and take one pot to build #habitat at home.
Notes on access: This workshop will be held in an unheated barn. If the weather is sunny, we will start the workshop outdoors. To come prepared, dress warmly but in layers. The parking lot includes space for 18 vehicles and 4 additional handicap accessible spots. Please park nose in, snugly as reasonable, to best accommodate the full number of participants. The barn is located directly adjacent to the parking lot. No bathrooms are available on site. Please let us know if there are ways we can help get you to the event!
Tickets
Our sliding scale registration is offered to make this event as accessible as possible while covering the costs of time, seeds, soil and pots. The recommended level is $25 for non-members, and $20 for members. Paying above provides generous support to others to attend, and contributing at lower levels is welcome if cost is a barrier to attendance. Thank you, we look forward to seeing you there!"

I start seed sowing in earnest this month and I’ve been getting tips from Chiltern Seeds and finding out a bit more about the firm - it’s celebrating its 50th birthday.

We decided to try a different approach to Tuesdays #today.
After I'd been to Tai Chi and collected Sacha from her gym class I filled the car up with petrol and got a Sainsbury's Meal Deal which we took to the allotment.
Lunch with coffee and then.....jobs!
We were probably only there a couple of hours but it was very productive.
Sacha planted yet more rescued flower bulbs - and there are definitely no more. I put some dahlias and gladioli in, with some marigold seeds.
I've also put some old found seeds in the ground - parsnip, lettuce and french beans - being old they're unlikely to germinate, but better to try than just throw them away.I didn't get the digging done, I intended, but I'm very pleased with our efforts.
It was a bit chilly, but it's dry.We might repeat it next Monday - but that requires me to get to the gym by bus, and it's two buses despite not being very far as the crow flies.

Photos from my Toronto garden. Aug 22, 2023.
-Anise hyssop and Black eyed Susan. Anise hyssop is becoming a favourite. Upright, does not flop over.
-Spotted bee balm. Will look pretty cool even during the winter.
-Lance-leaved coreopsis. Cheerful, short plant that benefits from dead-heading.
All four species mentioned were winter sown earlier in 2023. What's extra wonderful is that they're blooming in their first year.
