💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🔪🔒 Archaeologists in #Pień, #Poland uncovered a 400-year-old grave of a young woman buried with a sickle across her neck and a padlock on her toe, defenses against the dead rising.
#DNA and isotope analysis showed she was wealthy, grew up locally, and suffered malnutrition. The grave was reopened later to add the objects, as the community feared her even after death.

AI Could Never Feel Something in Its Bones
Things That AI Cannot Do – #15 in a series
August 25, 2026
Credit: NASAThere is something that all humans share and that is our bones. Bones are made of essential elements much like those found in the earth. Our bones hold us up even when we feel like sinking down. We have skeletons in the closet, and yes those are bones. We even have a funny bone which weirdly is no laughing matter.
Paleontologists have found bones that are hundreds of thousands of years old. These old bones, pieced together, tell a story of a life that we can only imagine. It is amazing that something as simple as a bone can outlast the longest of civilizations. Shows like Human on PBS help us understand man’s long and complicated evolution towards this century we all live in. We learn that the human has been at this game for a very long time. AI, on the other hand, is still a toddler in diapers.
AI depends on rare minerals mined from the far corners of the earth. Most of them are elements that the common person has never heard of; but without them, the complex computer systems it depends on could not survive. When those materials are depleted someday, as rare things often are, then Artificial Intelligence will silently melt away into the dark hole of existence. Perhaps.
I don’t know when the saying “I feel it in my bones” even started, but it surely has something to do with intuition. Intuition is a hard thing to describe except perhaps as something we feel in our bones which is a type of circular argument. It is the feeling we get when things are going along smoothly. But, more often than not, it is a signal from our core that something is amiss.
Where is this core? Is it found in the soul or the bones? When we die, our soul will move on to that place where souls go. Where that might be is one of the great mysteries of life, but our bones will remain here on earth. Someday, someone might pick up a fragment of bone and create a story about us and how we lived our lives during this twenty-first century. The story will surely include details about how fragile and sacred that life was, and how blessed we all were to be living on this blue planet oasis floating in the abyss of space.
Someday, when the fragile ecosystem of rare minerals that keeps AI alive has been depleted, all that will remain is the hollow metal shell of itself. Someday, some scientist wandering about looking for artifacts may pick up a shard from some great discard pile and wonder… what did man do with this? The answer will be … it depends.

> — NIH/NIGMSBut I wonder, at what font size did they measure this? 12px? 16px? It only holds four chars: "ATGC"
And was it measured for normal human eyes, or did they use someone with 20/20 vision as the reference?

@dramypsyd @VisualStuart At least I don’t think you will have hacked your own source code.
Aha moment! Monetizing our personal #dna sequence… first step will be copyright. I don’t want some biotech startup to claim my dna as their property! You know they’ll try.

In painted #caves, ancient #human #DNA clings to the walls
Traces could someday help link #prehistoric #paintings to the people who made them
Study cannot link DNA to artists behind #cavepaintings. But the knowledge that human DNA can be preserved on cave walls for thousands of years may enable future work that probes role of women in ancient art, traces the movement of artists and brings clarity to the debate over #Neandertals’ artistic abilities.

💁🏻♀️ TIL: ☀️🧴 A #JAMA #Dermatology meta-analysis pooled 17 studies covering more than 321,000 people and found that a history of painful, blistering sunburns raised the odds of squamous cell carcinoma by 51% to 69%, with severe #childhood burns linked to up to three times the risk.
Researchers caution that the evidence is uncertain because it relies on people recalling past burns. The study reinforces #sun protection such as Slip, Slop, Slap for #kids and #teens.

An ancient DNA perspective on the Russian conquest of Yakutia
"We found Yakut origins tracing back to local populations that admixed with Trans-Baikal groups migrating as the Great Mongol Empire spread. Despite the Russian conquest, the Yakut gene pool and oral microbiomes appeared largely stable, although smallpox strains distinct from those documented in Europe by approximately 1650 circulated."

The Nanosecond Scientist
A BolesBlogs.com reader forwarded me a transcript and asked whether any of it holds up. A man is talking about human origins. He says Homo sapiens appeared out of nowhere. He says a missing link sits at the base of our species, and that the link is easy to find: hand any person's DNA to a scientist who works with CRISPR, ask whether the sample has been edited, and the answer arrives in a nanosecond. Yes. Edited. From there he moves to the identity of the editor, God or a visiting intelligence with advanced technology, and he closes by asking why Britain colonized America. Here is the short answer before the long one. Three of the speaker's sentences are accurate. One sentence is invented, and that invented sentence carries the entire argument. Everything downstream of it, the aliens, Dr. Moreau, the colony, the closing questions, rests on a laboratory result that has never happened and cannot happen. The combination deserves slow handling, because the arrangement recurs everywhere now, and the arrangement does more damage than the content. […] -

Unklar…

"Understanding how cells actually read those instructions has remained one of biology’s major challenges." - Bart Deplancke.
He and his team have helped complete the largest map yet of how human cells read DNA. Their work also reveals how chemical marks can change the meaning of the genetic instructions.
