Looking at a sudden bright light can trigger the #photicSneeze reflex, also called #ACHOO #syndrome. It affects roughly 18–35% of people and often happens when moving from darkness into sunlight.
The exact mechanism is still uncertain, but the leading explanation is:
Bright light stimulates the retina and optic nerve.
Nearby brain pathways involving the trigeminal nerve—which carries sensations from the eyes, nose, and face—may become activated through “cross-talk.”
The brain mistakenly interprets this as nasal irritation.
The sneeze reflex is triggered, sometimes more than once.
Another theory is that pupil constriction activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which may indirectly stimulate the nasal passages. It appears to be an inherited trait in some families. Don’t stare directly at the Sun, especially while driving; sunglasses can reduce the trigger.
