There’s a few strands of delicate web still clinging to the orchid’s petals. The sunlight shatters in rays though palms trees inside the corner orchid garden. #photography #flowers #orchids #bloomscroll

Small and soft. known as the “unscented dendrobium” but it has a huge fragrance. It smells delicious, like star jasmine mixed with fruit. 📸 mine #flowers #orchids #bloomscroll #nature

Ecological change - No plan bee
Preserved orchids show pollination has fallen 60% since the 1970s
"Most plants are flexible. If one pollinator disappears, another might fill the gap. But for many orchid species, there is no other pollinator."
"While widespread declines in pollinators have been documented in Europe and North America, equivalent evidence from Australasia is lacking." >>

Today's vanilla bean "sunning". It was overcast, but I still brought them out of their sweat to air out and get some light.
They're now back in their cozy cooler bag with a fresh hot water bottle.
And I just realized that as I was writing this post, I'm listening to a group called "vanilla": https://youtu.be/WPgImQNv8CM

#SphagnumMoss vs #PeatMoss: Environmental Guide 2026
Home - Comparisons - Sphagnum Moss vs Peat Moss: Environmental Guide 2026
Last Updated, September 11th, 2025
Excerpts: "Here’s what shocked me: peat moss takes thousands of years to form, yet we’re harvesting it faster than nature can replace it. Meanwhile, sphagnum moss can be sustainably harvested in just 5-6 years. That’s a massive difference that directly impacts our planet’s carbon storage and wetland ecosystems."
[...]
"The environmental implications of choosing between sphagnum moss and peat moss extend far beyond your garden. Peatlands cover only 3% of Earth’s land surface but store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined. When we harvest peat moss, we’re not just removing a growing medium – we’re releasing carbon that’s been locked away for millennia.
Research from wetland ecologists cited by Oregon State University Extension confirms that peat is being harvested at non-sustainable rates. The extraction process requires draining bogs, which immediately begins releasing CO2 as the peat oxidizes. A single hectare of drained peatland can emit 15-20 tons of CO2 annually – equivalent to driving a car around 50,000 miles."
[...]
"Sphagnum moss works exceptionally well for #orchids, particularly epiphytic species that naturally grow on trees. Its chunky texture provides the perfect balance of moisture retention and air circulation that orchid roots require. I’ve found that wrapping orchid roots in slightly damp sphagnum moss can revive stressed plants remarkably quickly.
For propagation, sphagnum moss creates an ideal environment for rooting cuttings. Its natural antibacterial properties help prevent rot while maintaining consistent moisture. Air layering, a propagation technique for woody plants, relies almost exclusively on sphagnum moss to encourage root development on branches still attached to the parent plant.
Carnivorous plants, which evolved in nutrient-poor bog environments, thrive in pure sphagnum moss. The moss provides the acidic, nutrient-free medium these specialized plants need while preventing mineral buildup that could damage their sensitive roots."

Thelymitra × irregularis (crested sun orchid) near the Genoa River, East Gippsland, VIC.
This beautiful naturally occurring hybrid is thought to be a cross between T. ixioides x T. carnea which both grow nearby at this location. Regarded as rare in VIC but managed to see one or two plants flowering at several locations this spring.

Small pink Caladenia orchid variations near the Mongarlowe River, Monga, NSW. Some interesting variations in flower colour and size in roadside plants on the edge of tall forest. Most plants here are probably closer to C. carnea although C. fuscata is more common to the north around the village of Mongarlowe.

Small pink Caladenia orchids near Monga, NSW. The pinker forms here look a lot like C. hillmani - although this is generally a coastal species. This plant was slightly unusual with two buds on the flowering stem (most plants here were single flowers) plus one of the buds had split into two flowers.

Small pink Caladenia variations near Monga, NSW. Smaller paler forms at this site resemble C. alata but the pinker forms maybe look a bit more like C. hillmani - particularly the occasional plant with much larger petals and sepals? C. hillmani is a coastal species so not exactly sure what is going on here in the mountains at almost 1000m altitude ;)

Waxlip orchid ((Glossodia / Caladenia major) with sundew (Drosera sp. - probably D. auriculata) near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.
Lots of both sundews and orchids out here in coastal heathland heading into spring - but hot/dry weather since then has seen both suffer a bit in recent weeks.

Anyone know about Dendrobium orchids?
I have several healthy ones, but then I have this one with many of its leaves going yellow.
What could be wrong with it? Too much/not enough watering? Too much/not enough feeding? Time for repotting? Need to urgently quarantine it away from my other plants?

Caladenia catenata (White Fingers) flowering amongst tall sundews near Gipsy Point, VIC. Large numbers of these sundews (I'm presuming Drosera auriculata) occur here in both open forest and heathland - often alongside various spring orchid species.

An Australian native orchid flower, I believe it's a dendrobium (rock orchid or rock lily). Not native to here (local versions are larger and yellow), & often looks like it's struggling, but still has good flowers. My dad gave it to us a looong time ago.

My hot pink moth #orchids are the most prolific bloomers, out of my small collection of indoor orchid #houseplants. These ones always produce multiple blooms & are delightful to admire.

My violet vanda is blooming! It's the only vanda I have, so it's a pleasure to see it bloom 🥰
Also, in pic 2 you can see how it's just hanging in a shady place. This plant's roots seem to really just want maximum exposure to air and water - no soil or moss or roots wrapping themselves around a tree. I'd be interested to see how this plant grows in the wild...Maybe it just hangs in the branches in the canopy.
It looks pretty healthy, so hopefully it likes this spot. It basically gets no direct sunlight and seems happy.
